The effect of feedback on keying performance

The introduction of new telephone signalling systems and new technologies for telephone keypads has stimulated interest in the effect of providing electronic feedback on keying performance. An experiment using a conventional keypad is reported which shows that electronic auditory feedback had no significant effect on keying speed, accuracy or subject's opinion. A further series of experiments investigating the best type of feedback to improve performance with ‘touch’ keypads is then described. It was found that an electronic tone presented through the telephone earpiece was the best feedback.

Finally, performance with two types of touch keyphones incorporating the optimum form of feedback was compared with performance using a conventional keyphone. It was found that accuracy was significantly greater with the conventional keyphone, although performance with the touch keypads could be improved by electronically removing some of the very short spurious signalling times produced by them.     

High-resolution optical imaging of magnetic-domain structures

High-resolution optical techniques for imaging magnetic domains in ferromagnetic materials such as confocal microscopy and scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) are reviewed. The imaging capabilities of different techniques and image formation are discussed in the case of in-plane as well as out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy in different illumination configurations. It is shown that the magnetooptical resolution of near-field measurements depends on the film thickness and is limited by the diffraction on magnetic domains throughout the film. For thin magnetic films, subwavelength resolution can be attained. In addition to well-known near-field magnetooptical effects (out-of plane magnetization sensitivity of linear near-field microscopy and in-plane magnetization sensitivity of nonlinear near-field measurements), linear SNOM imaging of in-plane magnetization in thin magnetic films as well as nonlinear imaging of out-of-plane domains has been demonstrated. Thus, linear and second-harmonic near-field imaging of both in-plane and out-of-plane oriented magnetic domains can be achieved in transparent and opaque specimens. This enables applications of SNOM for studies of all kinds of magnetic materials. High-resolution optical imaging is required for characterization of the micro-magnetic and magnetooptical properties of novel magnetic structures in order to adopt a bottom-up approach in the search for new materials with improved characteristics.

Better environmental regulation — contributions from risk-based decision-making

Internationally, pressure is being exerted on governments and regulators to develop modern forms of regulation that deliver more for less, and in better ways. We discuss the ways in which one large regulator, the Environment Agency for England and Wales, has responded to such pressures by implementing risk-based approaches to regulation. After exploring the context for key elements of risk-based environmental regulation, we consider the evolving influence of such approaches. We discuss the impacts against the UK Government's principles for better regulation and the key criteria for policy evaluation, before considering some of the challenges: the need to i) understand the best practice and promote consistency in risk-based regulation; ii) develop reliable, responsive forms of risk assessment and monitoring; iii) build capacities for responsive risk regulation; iv) evaluate the influence of different regulatory styles; and v) better understand the potential role of the private sector.     

Functional reentry's influence on intracellular calcium in the LRd membrane equations

This paper examines relationships between transmembrane potential (Vm), [Ca2+]i dependent membrane ionic currents, and [Ca2+]i handling by the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) in a two-dimensional model of cardiac tissue. Luo-Rudy dynamic (LRd) membrane equations were used because they include detailed formulations for triggered SR Ca2+ release dependent on membrane Ca2+ influx (CICR) and for spontaneous SR Ca2+ release following calsequestrin buffer overload (SCR). Reentry's rapid rate (110-ms cycle length) elevated [Ca2+]i and limited CICR, which in turn promoted SCR that occurred at intervals of 320-350 ms, was preferential at sites located inside the functional center, and destabilized the reentrant activation sequence. Although adjustment of LRd parameters for SR Ca2+ modified SCR interval and peak [Ca2+]i in voltage clamp simulations with a command waveform representing Vm time course within the functional center, SCR persisted. Using the same command waveform, SCR also occurred with an alternate SR Ca2+ formulation that represented subcellular details underlying CICR. LRd parameter adjustments to promote CICR and limit SCR in subsequent reentry simulations failed to eliminate SCR completely, as they modulated SCR intervals in a manner consistent with the voltage clamp simulations. Taken together, our findings support a destabilizing influence of functional reentry on [Ca2+]i handling. However, [Ca2+]i instabilities did not always fractionate depolarization wavefronts during reentry. Fractionation depended, in part, upon CICR and SCR parameters in the LRd formulation for SR Ca2+ release.     

Mapping protein expression in mouse pancreatic islets by immunolabeling and electron energy loss spectrum-imaging

A combination of immuno-electron microscopy and electron energy-loss spectrum-imaging was used to map the distributions of endocrine polypeptide hormones and proteins in mouse pancreatic islet of Langerhans. Tissue was analyzed from control animals and from mice that were heterozygous for the Anx7 gene, which defines a Ca2+/GTP-dependent membrane fusion and ion channel protein. The heterozygous Anx7 (+/-) mouse displays defects in IP3 receptor mediated Ca2+ signaling and insulin secretion. Therefore, information was obtained about the distributions of the hormones insulin and glucagon, as well as the proteins ANX7 and the IP3 receptor. Insulin secretion appears to be defective in the mutants. It was found from immunolabeling experiments that expression of the IP3 receptor is reduced in mutant islets compared to control islets. Subcellular distributions of sulfur and nitrogen obtained by electron energy-loss spectrum-imaging showed that the insulin concentrations of beta granules were essentially the same in control and mutant islets. By contrast, immunogold labeling of mutant islets shows more insulin immunoreactivity in the beta granules. It follows that insulin may be packaged differently in mutant islets, making antigenic determinants more available to the labeling antibody. The increased rate of insulin secretion in the hyperplastic mutant islets can be explained by compensatory increases in islet size, rather than by an increased insulin concentration in the beta cells. The results indicate that reduced ANX7 expression leads to defects in the IP3 receptor expression in the endocrine cells of the mutant mouse. Increased size of the islet or of adrenal medulla may be a compensatory mechanism for secretion defect by individual endocrine cells. Defects in IP3 receptor expression, and documented consequences of a Ca2+ signaling defect, lead to other changes in organelles such as the mitochondrial number in islet beta-cells. The effects and consequences of reduced ANX7 expression on mitochondria are evident in ultrastructural observations.     

Effects of DUT mismatch on the noise figure characterization: a comparative analysis of two Y-factor techniques

Device mismatch seriously degrades accuracy in noise figure characterization. The suitability of corrections to the gain definitions for a more precise noise figure evaluation for mismatched devices is investigated and compared to classical techniques. The effects of device mismatch on the noise figure of the noise-meter receiver and its impact on the final accuracy are analyzed.
