Polymers have been identified as replacement materials for metallic liners in composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPVs) for future space launchers. PEEK, Nylon, and PVDF plastics formed from base powder grades have been permeability tested to determine their susceptibility to the diffusion of helium through flatwise panel cross sections. Permeability, diffusion, and solubility coefficients have been obtained for each material with PVDF and PA11 grades showing the lowest permeability coefficients and hence the best barrier properties to permeation. Crystallinity percentages and internal air void contents in the polymer samples have also been used to assess the differences in permeability between materials with an analysis of void dispersion effects given through X‐ray CT scanning techniques. The measured permeability coefficients have been used to assess the ability of all materials tested to act as a functional polymer liner in a standard COPV with final leak rates predicted based on liner thicknesses and weights. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of the extrusion rate on the morphological changes of poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) blend through a capillary die were investigated. In this study, the extrusion rate or mass flow rate is altered from 0.5 g min?1 to 2 g min?1 with an increment of 0.5 g min?1. The PLA/PVA blend with a composition of 30/70 (wt %) exhibits a particle matrix morphology with dispersed PLA droplets within the PVA matrix. It is found that, the spherical or ellipsoidal dispersed PLA droplets are elongated and coalesced into rod‐like or longer ellipsoidal droplets when they pass through the capillary die. When the extrusion rate increases, the coalescence between the large PLA droplets occurs more intense. However, the changes of the extrusion rate have no strong effect on the coalescence of small droplets having diameter less than about 150 nm. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Binary blends of polypropylene (PP) and ethylene‐octene copolymer (EOC) are prepared by continuous electron‐induced reactive processing at various mass ratios of the blend components and various doses without adding of any grafting agents. The influence of mass ratio and dose is investigated in order to get the optimum processing behavior of toughened PP as well as optimum properties of resulting fibers. It is found that toughened PP with a PP/EOC blend ratio of 97.5–2.5 mass % can be used advantageously as a matrix component for the process of online spinning of glass fiber/toughened PP hybrid yarns. Such hybrid yarns belong to one of the most advanced production methods for the manufacturing of fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites with an increased mechanical performance. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A largely increased number of GGGGCC repeats located in the non-coding region of C9orf72 gene have been identified as the leading cause of two related neurological disorders, familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). We examined G-quadruplex forming ability of GGGGCCrepeat containing oligonucleotides with four guanine tracts chosen as the smallest possible model to form a unimolecular G-quadruplex. These oligonucleotides are readily to folded into G-quadruplexes in the presence of K+ ions. However, the formation of multiple structures makes structural analysis challenging and time consuming. We observed that flanking sequences on 5'- and 3'-ends as well as mutations of loop residues have a profound effect on folding. Sequence d[(G4C2)3G4] was chosen for further scrutiny and optimization of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic properties with dG to 8Br-dG substitutions at specific positions in the sequence under different folding conditions. Expectedly, folding into desired predominant topology is facilitated when substituted residue adopted a syn conformation in the naturally-occurring structure. Single dG to 8Br-dG substitution at position 21 and fine tuning of folding conditions facilitate folding of d[(G4C2)3GGBrGG] into (mostly) a single G-quadruplex, and thus enable determination of its high-resolution structure by high-field NMR. 相似文献

At metal/organic interfaces, the insertion of an organic monolayer can significantly modify the surface properties of the substrate, especially in terms of charge injection across the interface. Herein, we study the formation of an insulating monolayer of morpholine or amine-functionalized polystyrene on Al(111) and Au(111) surfaces and its impact on surface work-function and charge injection. First-principles calculations based on Density Functional Theory have been carried out and point to a significant decrease in the work-function of modified metal surfaces; this is in very good agreement with ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy measurements performed on the Au(111) surface. In addition, a bilayer cathode, consisting of a thin film of high-work-function metal, such as Al and Au, and a layer of amine-functionalized polystyrene, was also fabricated and tested in organic light-emitting diodes. Such bilayer structures exhibit substantially enhanced efficiency when compared with controls without the functionalized polymers. Our combined theoretical and experimental investigation gives insight into how a thin layer of a commodity polymer can be used to transform rather high-work-function metals into high-performance cathodes to provide efficient electron injection. 相似文献

Alcohol‐free beers (AFBs) are an attractive segment of the beer market both for the brewing industry and for consumers. While AFBs produced by arrested/limited fermentation often suffer from a lack of volatile compounds, beer flavour can be improved by yeast selection and optimization of fermentation conditions. The yeast selection strategy was demonstrated by comparing traditional lager yeast with selected cachaça yeast strains. Correspondingly, response surface methodology was used to enhance the formation of the flavour‐active volatile compounds by optimization of the fermentation conditions (original wort extract, fermentation temperature, pitching rate). Statistical analysis of the experimental data revealed the relative significance of process variables and their interactions. The developed quadratic model describing the responses of total esters and higher alcohols to changes in process variables was used to predict the ideal fermentation conditions in terms of flavour formation. Cavitation and superstructure evolution of polymers during stretching play crucial roles to influence the mechanical properties of materials. In this study, we investigated deformation-mediated superstructures and cavitation of poly (l-lactide) (PLA) as well as their dependence on stretching temperatures by in-situ small-angle X-ray (SAXS) analysis coupled with mechanical testing. It is found that the cavitation and crystalline deformation are strongly influenced by stretching stress during deformation, which significantly depends on the stretching temperature. At lower stretching temperature (70 °C), the cavitation is initiated before the yielding and then stimulates the crystallite shearing. At higher stretching temperature (90 °C), however, the crystallites shear firstly and then crystalline deformation promotes the formation of cavities orientated along the stretching direction. High stretching temperature benefits the formation of relatively perfect crystals with high orientation. The results provide the basic knowledge of how to adjust the mechanical properties of polymer materials by controlling their superstructure in the deformation process. 相似文献

Male Colletes cunicularius bees pollinate the orchid, Ophrys exaltata, after being sexually deceived by the orchid’s odor-mimicry of the female bee’s sex pheromone. We detected biologically active volatiles of C. cunicularius by using gas chromatographic–electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) with simultaneous flame ionization detection. After identification of the target compounds by coupled gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS), we performed behavioral tests using synthetic blends of the active components. We detected 22 EAD active compounds in cuticular extracts of C. cunicularius females. Blends of straight chain, odd-numbered alkanes and (Z)-7-alkenes with 21–29 carbon atoms constituted the major biologically active compounds. Alkenes were the key compounds releasing mating behavior, especially those with (Z)-7 unsaturation. Comparison of patterns of bee volatiles with those of O. exaltata subsp. archipelagi revealed that all EAD-active compounds were also found in extracts of orchid labella. Previous studies of the mating behavior in C. cunicularius showed linalool to be an important attractant for patrolling males. We confirmed this with synthetic linalool but found that it rarely elicited copulatory behavior, in accordance with previous studies. A blend of active cuticular compounds with linalool elicited both attraction and copulation behavior in patrolling males. Thus, linalool appears to function as a long-range attractant, whereas cuticular hydrocarbons are necessary for inducing short-range mating behavior. 相似文献
