Soft X-ray resonant diffraction is a new technique and there exist several examples of large resonant enhancements of charge and magnetic scattering that can be obtained at the L-edges of 3d transition metal oxides. Here we have employed resonant soft X-ray scattering at the manganese L edges which provide a direct measurement of the orbital ordering. We have studied the layered manganite La0.5Sr1.5MnO4 that displays charge, spin, and orbital ordering. Energy scans at constant wavevector show that there are two separate contributions to the observed scattering, direct Goodenough orbital ordering and strong cooperative Jahn–Teller distortions of the Mn3+ ions. Finally we will show how that the charge, spin and orbital degrees of freedom are strongly correlated in these materials. 相似文献

A method for generating olfactory stimuli for humans within a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experimental design is described. The system incorporates a nasal-mask in which the change from odorant to no-odorant conditions occurs in less than 500 ms and is not accompanied by visual, auditory, tactile, or thermal cues. The mask provides an ordorant-free environment following prolonged ordorant presence. Specific imaging parameters that are conducive to the study of the human olfactory system are described. In a pilot study performed using these methods, the specific patterns of activation observed converged with published experimental and clinical findings. 相似文献

Perovskite manganites are interesting because of their colossal magnetoresistance. In this work high resolution thermal diffusivity measurements of La1–x
Sr

MnO3 (0 x 0.3) single crystals in the temperature range from 250 to 400 K are presented. A photopyroelectric device in the standard back configuration has been used. The thermal diffusivity through second-order magnetic phase transitions, as well as through first- and second-order structural phase transitions has been measured. The critical parameters of the sample with x = 0.3 at the ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition have been obtained, and are close to the values predicted by the Ising model. 相似文献

Neuroimaging studies have been inconclusive in characterizing the role of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) for maintaining increasingly larger amounts of information in working memory (WM). To address this question, the authors collected event-related functional MRI data while participants performed an item-recognition task in which the number of to-be-remembered letters was parametrically modulated. During maintenance of information in WM, the dorsolateral and the ventrolateral PFC exhibited linearly increasing activation in response to increasing WM load. Prefrontal regions could not be distinguished from one another on the basis of load sensitivity, but the dorsolateral PFC had stronger functional connectivity with the parietal and motor cortex than the ventrolateral PFC. These results suggest an increasingly important role for the PFC in actively maintaining information as the amount of that information increases. A comprehensive study of the macrobenthic communities in the Kodungallur–Azhikode Estuary (KAE) was conducted during 2009–2011 period. A total of 18,846 organisms were collected, with 60% being malacostracans, followed by polychaetes (20%), molluscs (9%) and ‘others’ group (11%). A total of 79 species in 71 genera belonging to 49 families were identified, with 33 spp. being polychaetes, 26 spp. being malacostracans, 11 spp. being molluscs and 9 spp. being in the ‘others’ group. A single species of opportunistic amphipod (Americorophium triaeonyx) comprised more than 62.05% of the total numerical abundance of macrobenthos. The other dominant species were Obelia bidentata, Arcuatula senhousia, Cirolana fluviatilis, Prionospio cirrifera and Capitella sp. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) results indicated environmental parameters such as water column salinity, turbidity, sediment Eh, substratum type, chlorophyll‐a concentration, depth and organic matter in sediment were the significant factors influencing the distribution of macrobenthic species in the KAE. An organic precursor synthesis of 8 mol% yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) powder from Zr–Y composite nitrate solution and sucrose has been studied. Oxidation of sucrose in Zr–Y composite nitrate solution containing excess nitric acid in situ generates hydroxy carboxylic acids that forms a white sol which showed peaks at 1640 cm−1 and 1363 cm−1 in IR spectrum corresponding to hydroxy carboxylic acid complexes of Zr and Y. Precursor mass obtained by drying the sol on calcinations at 600 °C produced loosely agglomerated particles of cubic YSZ. Deagglomerated YSZ contain submicron particles with D50 value of 0.5 μm and the particles are aggregates of nanocrystallites of nearly 10 nm size. Compacts prepared by pressing the YSZ powder sintered to 96.7% TD at 1450 °C. The sintered YSZ ceramic showed an average grain size of 2.2 μm. 相似文献

High-density growth of single-crystalline Bi2Se2Te nanowires was achieved via the vapour-liquid-solid process. The stoichiometry of samples grown at various substrate temperatures is precisely determined based on energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy on individual nanowires. A novel process for low-density alumina foams has been studied. Aqueous acidic sucrose solution containing aluminum nitrate when concentrated by heating formed a viscous resin. The resin mixed well with aqueous alumina slurry and the resulting powder-filled resin underwent foaming on heating in a Teflon mold. The green foams produced had very good handling strength. Binder removal and sintering of the green foam prepared at sucrose to alumina weight ratio in the range 0.69–1.03 produced alumina foam bodies with porosities 93.5%–96.7%. Microstructure of the foams depends on sucrose to alumina weight ratio such that a clear transition from reticulated structure to cellular foam structure took place at sucrose to alumina weight ratio below 0.89. Average pore size depends on sucrose to alumina weight ratio and was observed in the range 0.48–2.69 mm. 相似文献
