Carbon Chain Length Modulates MDA-MB-231 Breast Cancer Cell Killing Mechanisms by Mitochondrially Targeted Aryl−Urea Fatty Acids

Targeting the tumor cell mitochondrion could produce novel anticancer agents. We designed an aryl−urea fatty acid ( 1 g ; 16({[4-chloro-3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]carbamoyl}amino)hexadecanoic acid) that disrupted the mitochondrion and decreased MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell viability. To optimize the aryl−ureas the present study evaluated mitochondrial targeting by 1 g analogues containing alkyl chains between 10–17 carbons. Using the dye JC-1, the C12−C17 analogues efficiently disrupted the mitochondrial membrane potential (IC₅₀s 3.5±1.2 to 7.6±1.1 μM) and impaired ATP production; shorter analogues were less active. 7-Aminoactinomycin D/annexin V staining and flow cytometry showed that these agents activated the killing mechanisms of necrosis and apoptosis to varying extents (7-aminoactinomycin D/annexin V staining ratios 4.3–6.0). Indeed, 1 g and its C17 analogue preferentially activated necrosis and apoptosis, respectively (ratios 2.1 and 16). Taken together, alkyl chain length is a determinant of mitochondrial targeting by aryl−ureas and can be varied to develop analogues that activate apoptosis or necrosis in a regulated fashion.     

Single chamber Solid Oxide Fuel Cells selective electrodes: A real chance with brownmillerite-based nanocomposites

In this contribution brownmillerite-based nanocomposite cathode for Single-Chamber Solid Oxide Fuel Cells is developed. These cells can be very attractive especially for small and cheap devices because of the absence of seals. The efficiency of SC-SOFCs is strictly connected to the selectivity of anode and cathode, the bottleneck for this technology. The development of a cathode inert in fuel oxidation is particularly challenging. Our strategy is to start from a catalytically un-active support (CFA = Ca₂FeAl_0.95Mg_0.05O₅) and induce the formation of iron oxide based nanoparticles, expected to activate oxygen. Symmetric (CFA + FeO_x/CGO/CFA + FeO_x) and complete cells (CFA + FeO_x/CGO/Ni-CGO) are studied in air and methane/oxygen 2:1 mixture. The Area Specific Resistance of CFA + FeO_x is less than 1/3 that of CFA. The high selectivity allows to reach an efficiency of 25%; power still needs to be increased but we demonstrated the possibility to develop selective low cost electrodes. The effect of air, methane/oxygen exposure and the heat treatments were carefully investigated.

Optical interconnection technology on the printed circuit board level is a key technology for future microelectronic equipment. The consideration of functional, technological, and economical requirements results in a hybrid solution, where electrical and optical interconnects are integrated into one substrate called electrical optical printed circuit board. The significant part of the entire design process for electrical optical printed circuit boards is marked by the design supporting modelling and simulation of optical interconnects. Based on an abstract model for an entire optical interconnect a simulation model for optical multimode-waveguides is presented, taking into account all significant waveguide properties. Apart from that, the modeling of active components (laser- and photo-diodes) is addressed.

Dabei bewegt sich die Qualit?t der betrachteten Angebote überwiegend auf einem hohen Niveau, was vor allem auf Seiten der kommerziellen Anbieter nicht weiter verwundert, da es sich bei RFID doch um einen zunehmend st?rker umk?mpften Markt handelt, auf dem es hei?t, potenzielle Kunden für sich zu akquirieren. Es darf mit Spannung erwartet werden, wie sich das Informationsangebot wandelt, wenn tats?chlich das prognostizierte exponentielle Wachstum des RFID-Marktes eintritt.     

Transient elastic waves in a half-space: comparison of the DBIE-method with the method of generalized ray

Summary The two-dimensional problem of wave propagation in an elastic half-space is studied by the DBIEM (Direct Boundary Integral Equation Method) combined with the finite difference procedure applied to the time variable. The present hybrid formulation employs the fundamental solution depending neither on the frequency nor on the time variable. Time records of surface responses of the half-space are computed and compared with those obtained by the numerical evaluation of exact analytical solutions to this problem.     

On compressible subsonic flow between impeller and casing of radial-flow compressors with superposed throughflow

Summary Subject of this paper is the numerical investigation of the flow between impeller and casing of compressors of radial construction. The solution procedure is based on implicite difference equations, in which parameters of material such as heat conductivity, viscosity and density are variable. Because of the assumption of low density, laminar flow conditions are assumed. The computation method makes possible the determination of the torque coefficient as a function of Reynolds-and Mach number as well as of geometry and superposed throughflow.With 3 Figures     

IV-Controlling in einem Systemhaus

This paper analyses the characteristics of software houses as service providers. The tasks of internal IT-services are determined from these characteristics and a reporting system for the IT-controlling is outlined. The concept results from the analysis of one of the 25 largest German software houses. The paper concludes with a case study of the fiscal year 2000 IT-controlling report of the above-mentioned firm.
