Chemotherapy of fascioliasis. 3. Amides derived from 4-cyano-2-iodo-6-nitrophenol (nitroxynil) and 2,6-di-iodo-4-nitrophenol (disophenol)

Amides have been prepared utilising 4-hydroxy-3-iodo-5-nitrobenzoic acid or 5-cyano-2-hydroxy-3-iodoaniline, the acid and amine respectively corresponding to 4-cyano-2-iodo-6-nitrophenol (nitroxynil). Analogous anilides were made from 3,5-di-iodo-4-hydroxybenzoic acid or 4-amino-2,6-di-iodophenol which bear a similar relationship to 2,6-di-iodo-4-nitrophenol (disophenol). None of the products was useful against Fasciola hepatica infections.

Statistical identification of the dynamic behavior of a dual input heat exchanger network

Statistical modelling procedures proposed by Box and Jenkins are used to develop models for the transfer function and noise behaviour of a dual input pilot scale heat exchanger network. Data were collected under operating conditions closely resembling full scale industrial operation first with uncorrelated inputs and then with correlated inputs. Two modelling strategies, a superposition approach and a transformed input approach, are employed to analyze the data. Computational advantages of the transformed input procedure for correlated input situations is demonstrated and the effectiveness of both strategies in detecting nonstationarity in the system noise is also illustrated.     

Study of particle erosion damage in Haynes Stellite 6B II: Transmission electron microscopy

Subsurface damage caused by erosion of Haynes Stellite 6B is examined using electron microscopy. The development, with erosion time and particle velocity, of dislocation motion and deformation twinning in the matrix and dislocation motion and cracking in the carbide is described. The main features of the deformation mechanisms are illustrated.     

Optical waveguide polariser with synchronous absorption

It is shown that a high TM-mode attenuation may be obtained in a buffered metal-clad optical waveguide with large buffer thickness. This is due to synchronous coupling to a highly lossy interface mode. The geometry offers significant advantages as a polarising structure. A TM/TE attenuation ratio of greater than 100 and a TE attenuation of < 1 dB/cm were measured.     

The flow and fracture of unidirectional

A yielding criterion, based upon calculated internal stress distributions, was developed for composite materials under various externally applied biaxial tension loadings. The stress distributions were computed using the finite element technique; the criterion showed that the yield strength of the composite is significantly higher than the transverse uniaxial yield strength for a wide range of biaxial loadings. Limited amounts of preliminary data were generated (using the hydraulic bulge test to develop biaxial stress loadings) to validate the analytical yielding criterion. The data obtained showed better agreement with the new yielding criterion than they did with the existing Hill Criterion.
