Low dark current quasi-Schottky barrier MSM-photodiode structures on n-Ga/sub 0.47/In/sub 0.53/As with p/sup +/-Ga/sub 0.47/In/sub 0.53/As cap layer

The p/sup +/-cap layer was used to fabricate a metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) interdigitated photodetector on Ga/sub 0.47/In/sub 0.53/As. The measured barrier height was Phi /sub Bn=/0.52 V, the ideality factor n=1.1 and average dark current density 2 mA/cm/sup 2/. A rise time of 45 ps at lambda =1.3 mu m under 2 V bias was measured for an MSM photodiode with 3 mu m finger width and finger gaps and an active area of 100*100 mu m/sup 2/.<>     

Low cycle fatigue and creep behavior of recrystallized Molybdenum near room termperature

The deformation behavior of pure recrystallized molybdenum under cyclic and static loads was investigated in the temperature range between 30°C and 10O°C, for stress amplitudes between 100 MPa and 250 MPa and for static loads up to 200 MPa. The results show that in spite of the low test temperatures and stress levels the Mo material exhibits considerable plastic strains which depend sensitively on frequenez and small changes in temperature.The activation energy deduced for the static and dynamic deformation is less than 0.98 eV which indicates thermally activated processes, to be explained by a dislocation kink model as described in the literature. The low-temperature fatigue behavior appears strongly influenced by creep-fatigue interaction phenomena.     

A consumption model for targeted electronic advertising

Information distribution networks will give consumers access to rich media-based electronic content in both business and home settings. Electronic advertising will become an integral component of such networks, subsidizing consumption while providing a new service for consumers without invading their personal space. The consumption model presented in this article explains how consumer-driven advertising might develop-and why it probably won't be soon     

Bridging scientist and practitioner perspectives in clinical psychology.

Literature suggests that a complex and often hostile relationship exists between the science and practice of clinical psychology. Contributors to this conflict of viewpoints are reconsidered within the proposition that there are different roads to discovery and that there may be good reasons to keep the science and practice of clinical psychology somewhat separate. Results of a national survey of 325 psychologists are reviewed that support the view that psychological practitioners value research and consider their practices to be augmented by scientific findings. However, they are in need of vehicles of communication that will help them translate scientific findings into practice. Results suggest that practitioners do more to understand scientific findings than scientists do to understand the problems that face clinical practitioners. Evolutionary variants of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 V3 region characterized by using a heteroduplex tracking assay

Syncytium-inducing (SI) variants of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) are evolutionary variants that are associated with rapid CD4+ cell loss and rapid disease progression. The heteroduplex tracking assay (HTA) was used to detect evolutionary V3 variants by amplifying the V3 sequences from viral RNA derived from 50 samples of patient plasma. For this V3-specific HTA (V3-HTA), heteroduplexes were formed between the patient V3 sequences and a probe with the subtype B consensus V3 sequence. Evolution was then measured by divergence from the consensus. The presence of evolutionary variants was correlated with SI detection data on the same samples from the MT-2 cell culture assay. Evolutionary variants were correlated with the SI phenotype in 88% of the samples, and 96% of the SI samples contained evolutionary variants. In most cases the evolutionary V3 variants represented discrete clonal outgrowths of virus. Sequence analysis of the six discordant samples that did not show this correlation indicated that three non-syncytium-inducing (NSI) samples had V3 sequences that had evolved away from the consensus sequence but not toward an SI genotype. A fourth sample showed little evolution away from the consensus but was SI, which indicates that not all SI variants require basic substitutions in V3. The other two samples had SI-like genotypes and NSI phenotypes, suggesting that V3-HTA was able to detect SI emergence in these samples in the absence of their detection in vitro. V3-HTA was also used to confirm SI variant selection in MT-2 cells and to examine the possibility of variant selection during virus culture in peripheral blood cells.     

Genotoxic activation of hydrazine, two dialkylhydrazines, thiourea and ethylene thiourea in the somatic w/w + assay of Drosophila melanogaster

Genotoxic activation of hydrazine (HZ), two symmetrical dialkylhydrazines, namely, 1,2dimethylhydrazine and 1,2-diethylhydrazine (SDMH and SDEH), thiourea (TU) and ethylene thiourea (ETU) has been evaluated by means of the w/w + somatic assay of Drosophila. Both low bioactivation insecticide-susceptible (IS) and high biotransformation insecticide-resistant (IR) strains were used. The combined application of insecticide-susceptible and insecticide-resistant strains should, in principle, detect somatic cell recombinagens in the Drosophila melanogaster in vivo w/w + assay. The IS strain was more susceptible to toxicity induced by the test chemicals than the IR stocks. Its performance in the biotransformation of the chemicals tested was rather poor. TU was inactive in all strains. With the active compounds, spot frequencies increased approximately linearly with dose for each spot type. SDEH gave a strong positive result in all three female genotypes exposed. HZ, ETU and SDMH were overall weakly positive in the IR strain Haag-79 (HG-R). Interestingly, ETU was clearly positive in the IR Hikone-R (HK-R) strain. A comparison of the recombinagenic potencies between the active and the weakly positive compounds, and among strains, showed pronounced genotype-dependent differences between the low and the high bioactivation strains. The ability of Drosophila to express several procarcinogens in relation to insecticide-resistance after activation catalyzed by CYP450 enzymes is discussed.     

Electrophysiologic and electrocardiographic aspects of the transplanted heart

The authors suggest that academic institutions build business-oriented policies and practices into the development of any nurse-run clinic to set the stage for financial independence when special or development funding ends. One university-affiliated program that provides 4,000 to 5,000 annual visits drastically changed its strategies when threatened with closure after free rent and other subsidies were withdrawn. The growing emphasis on ambulatory care roles for nurses at all levels makes such clinics critical to the success of the broad-based curricula of nursing education programs, as well as the clinic's value to communities they serve. Funding difficulties frequently threaten the existence of such nurse-run clinics once the initial grant funding is no longer available. This has caused a new emphasis on running such clinics in a business-wise manner. Among the strategies initiated were: direct full-pay at the time of service; a realistic business management plan; aggressive planned marketing; contracts and agreements with other agencies; obtaining provider status with selected HMOs.
