We studied corticosteroid-binding globulin (CBG) in 25 drug-free depressed patients and 33 healthy controls over a wide age-range. CBG was measured at 0800, 1400, 2000 and 2400 h in all subjects. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measurement design revealed a significant effect of gender and time, but not of diagnosis (depressed patients vs healthy controls) or age group (< 50/> 50 years). In females, regardless of diagnosis, CBG plasma concentrations were significantly increased, when compared with their male counterparts. Although as a group depressed patients had significantly higher plasma cortisol concentrations (108.0 +/- 23.1 vs 70.7 +/- 10.9 micrograms/l), CBG levels did not differ between the two groups. Thus we did not find hypercortisolemia in depression to be paralleled by a decrease in CBG. However, the exaggerated activity of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenocortical system in healthy and depressed females is associated with an increase in plasma CBG.  相似文献

We present an algorithm that explicitly utilizes the wavelength dependence of tissue optical properties for diffuse optical tomography. We have previously shown that the method gives superior separation of absorption and scattering. Here the technique is described and tested in detail, and optimum wavelength sets for a broad range of chromophore combinations are discovered and analyzed.  相似文献

Optical tomography is being developed as a means of detecting and specifying disease in the adult female breast. We present a series of clinical three-dimensional optical images obtained with a 32-channel time-resolved system and a liquid-coupled interface. Patients place their breasts in a hemispherical cup to which sources and detectors are coupled, and the remaining space is filled with a highly scattering fluid. A cohort of 38 patients has been scanned, with a variety of benign and malignant lesions. Images show that hypervascularization associated with tumors provides very high contrast due to increased absorption by hemoglobin. Only half of the fibroadenomas scanned could be observed, but of those that could be detected, all but one revealed an apparent increase in blood volume and a decrease in scatter and oxygen saturation.  相似文献

Glass‐ceramics are modern multiphase materials. Different types of glass‐ceramics can be fabricated and their properties tailored to meet specific requirements. It is possible, therefore, to produce glasses that combine desirable optical properties such as transparency and mechanical properties such as strength. Furthermore, this controlled development of glass‐ceramics also enables the fabrication of materials exhibiting properties that are unknown in conventional glasses and ceramics. In this article, the authors discuss nucleation and crystallization phenomena in the controlled development of various glass‐ceramics on the basis of their own work. The reaction mechanisms in the formation of glass‐ceramics and their microstructures are illustrated. In addition, the resulting properties of the glass‐ceramics and their particular applications are presented.  相似文献

This article addresses the influence of the addition of short dispersed and short integral fibres made of alkali-resistant (AR) glass on the fracture behaviour of textile-reinforced concrete (TRC) subject to tensile loading. A series of uniaxial, deformation-controlled tension tests was performed to study the strength, deformation, and fracture behaviour of thin, narrow plates made of TRC, both with and without the addition of short fibres. Additionally, uniaxial tension tests on specimens reinforced with only short fibres were performed to figure out the difference in behaviour in the absence of textile reinforcement. Furthermore, multifilament-yarn and single-fibre pullout tests were carried out to gain a better understanding of bonding properties and crack-bridging behaviour. While pronounced enhancement of first-crack stress was achieved due to the addition of short dispersed fibres (the value increased by a factor of 2), a significant improvement in tensile strength was recorded for TRC specimens with the addition of integral glass fibres; the value increased by approximately 30 %. Moreover, TRC specimens reinforced with short dispersed glass fibres showed formation of more and finer cracks in comparison to the specimens with integral fibres. It was also found that short integral fibres can improve the bond between multifilament-yarns and the surrounding matrix by means of “special” cross-links. In TRC with short dispersed fibres this phenomenon was less pronounced. The investigations were accompanied by microscopical investigations which provided additional basis for an in-depth discussion of the decisive working mechanisms of hybrid reinforcement.  相似文献

A Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is the most common nosocomial infection worldwide. The main virulence factors of pathogenic C. difficile are TcdA and TcdB, which inhibit small Rho-GTPases. The inhibition of small Rho-GTPases leads to the so-called cytopathic effect, a reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton, an impairment of the colon epithelium barrier function and inflammation. Additionally, TcdB induces a necrotic cell death termed pyknosis in vitro independently from its glucosyltransferases, which are characterized by chromatin condensation and ROS production. To understand the underlying mechanism of this pyknotic effect, we conducted a large-scale phosphoproteomic study. We included the analysis of alterations in the phosphoproteome after treatment with TcdA, which was investigated for the first time. TcdA exhibited no glucosyltransferase-independent necrotic effect and was, thus, a good control to elucidate the underlying mechanism of the glucosyltransferase-independent effect of TcdB. We found RAS to be a central upstream regulator of the glucosyltransferase-independent effect of TcdB. The inhibition of RAS led to a 68% reduction in necrosis. Further analysis revealed apolipoprotein C-III (APOC3) as a possible crucial factor of CDI-induced inflammation in vivo.  相似文献
