The course of two neonates and one 4-month-old infant with laboratory and clinical evidence of central hypothyroidism is described. All three presented with failure to thrive and improved after L-T4 therapy. Early recognition and treatment of newborns and infants with central hypothyroidism is important to maximize the potential for growth and development. Two of the three infants have been documented to have transient central hypothyroidism of hypothalamic origin, not previously reported.  相似文献

The friction and wear characteristics of acetal reinforced with 25 wt.% of randomly dispersed carbon fibers were investigated and compared with those of the base resin. The addition of carbon fibers to the polymer decreased the coefficient of friction and wear rate for the composite material sliding against a hardened and ground steel disk for extended periods of time. A number of surface topography parameters pertinent to the wear process, i.e. arithmetic average roughness, autocorrelation function, asperity density, tip radius of curvature, distribution of the radii of curvature and heights of asperity peaks, and ordinale heights, were calculated and evaluated for the sliding surface of the disk. The worn surfaces of filled and unfilled polymer pins were examined by scanning electron microscopy to investigate the probable wear mechanism for these materials. It was found that the wear of reinforced polymers proceeds by the pulling-out of the broken and worn fibers.  相似文献

An extensive study of rheological characteristics of coal tar and petroleum pitches with and without additives, namely, petroleum coke, natural graphite and carbon black has been made. It is found that all pitches, pure or mixed with a carbon additive are not Newtonian as reported in the literature, but behave Theologically as Bingham plastics with certain yield stress and plastic viscosity at all temperatures of measurement between 85–180°C. The yield stress and plastic viscosity both decrease with increase in temperature of the pitch. A pure petroleum pitch having the same softening point as that of a coal tar pitch is found to have a lower viscosity compared to that of the latter at all temperatures of measurement. This suggests that the criterion of softening point as a measure of suitability of a coal tar pitch binder in the manufacture of artificial carbon is not sufficient for petroleum pitches. Addition of ten parts of carbon black by weight of pitch results in a considerable decrease in viscosity change with temperature of the coal tar pitch compared to almost insignificant change in the case of the petroleum pitch of the same softening point. However, the addition of petroleum coke or natural graphite makes the pitch more viscous but does not change the temperature dependence of viscosity of either of the two types of pitches. Well aligned carbon nanowalls, a few nanometers thick, were fabricated by continuous flow of aluminum acetylacetonate (Al(acac)3) without a catalyst, and independent of substrate material. The nanowalls were grown on Si, and steel substrates using inductively coupled plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. Deposition parameters like flow of argon gas and substrate temperature were correlated with the growth of carbon nanowalls. For a high flow of argon carrier gas, an increased amount of aluminum in the film and a reduced lateral size of the carbon walls were found. The aluminum is present inside the carbon nanowall matrix in the form of well crystallized nanosized Al4C3 precipitates.  相似文献

Hybrid materials comprising diamond nanoparticles (ND) and oligo(phenylenevinylenes) (OPVs) have been synthesized by the covalent linking of acid-functionalized ND and OPV-amine. Chromophore-functionalized ND particles with long alkyl and π-conjugated groups are readily dispersed in various organic solvents without any precipitation after several hours. A careful study of the properties of the hybrid materials revealed an aggregation-induced energy transfer from the blue fluorescent nanodiamonds to green emitting OPVs. At very low concentrations the hybrid emits in the blue region, but as the concentration is increased a gradual transition from blue to green emission occurs. Competitive processes such as aggregation-induced enhanced emission and self-absorption have been ruled out and a molecular picture of the phenomenon is proposed. This strategy can open a plethora of new avenues for fluorescent nanodiamonds in optoelectronics and light harvesting apart from bio-imaging.  相似文献

We report visible spectroelectrochemical (SEC) characterization of cytochrome c552 (cyt c552) in viable Geobacter sulfurreducens biofilms on tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) electrodes poised at 0.24 V vs. SHE. G. sulfurreducens biofilms were grown in minimal medium with acetate as electron donor (turnover conditions), followed by 24 h incubation in electron donor-depleted medium (non-turnover conditions). The electronic absorption spectra of G. sulfurreducens biofilms showed the lowest energy absorption band in the reduced state at 552 nm, which indicated excess of cyt c552 in the biofilm. The spectra under non-turnover conditions displayed gradual reduction of the cyt c552, following the step-wise decrease of electrode potential from 0.0 V to −0.6 V vs. standard calomel electrode (SCE). The spectral changes were fully reversible in both positive and negative direction of the scan potential, with average midpoint potential value of −0.42 V vs. SCE. Confocal microscopy analysis revealed that the thickness of biofilms under turnover conditions and non-turnover conditions was approximately 35 and 3.5 μm, respectively. This is the first study to observe the reversible redox conversion of cyt c552 in viable G. sulfurreducens biofilms.  相似文献

The residual effects of cumulative thermal aging on the crystal structural characteristics of the fluoro carbon poly(tetra fluoro ethylene) (PTFE) have been studied by X‐ray diffraction methods. The initial hexagonal arrangement of the PTFE chains in a 157 helical conformation is left unaffected by the exposures to temperatures (T), up to and beyond its melting point, Tm. The unit cell registers a residual anisotropic volume expansion. The anisotropy arises from the enhanced enlargement of the basal plane dimension a compared with the axial dimension c. Conformational changes contributing to the observed increase in the chain length have been examined. Enhancement of residual crystallinity of samples aged at T's < Tm suggests that the selective thermal aging could be used as an effective tool to improve the initial crystallinity of commercially available PTFE. The activation energy for 50% enhancement in initial crystallinity has been estimated as 53.9 kJ mol?1. Aging at 400°C, a temperature above Tm, is accompanied by markedly different features viz., deterioration in crystallinity and other structural characteristics.
