Starvation, growth phase, and carbon source influenced bacterial cell surface hydrophobicity. Both the number and kind of microorganisms that colonized metal surfaces depended on the type of metal and the presence of an imposed electrical potential. No significant differences in attachment and growth of a pure culture were observed when metal surfaces were dipped in an exogenous energy source. The chemical composition of naturally occurring adsorbed organic films on metal surfaces was shown to be independent of surface composition and polarization.  相似文献

Although the response of the right ventricle (RV) to the increased afterload is an important determinant of the patient outcome, very little is known about the underlying mechanisms. Mast cells have been implicated in the pathogenesis of left ventricular maladaptive remodeling and failure. However, the role of mast cells in RV remodeling remains unexplored. We subjected mast cell-deficient WBB6F1-KitW/W-v (KitW/KitW-v) mice and their mast cell-sufficient littermate controls (MC+/+) to pulmonary artery banding (PAB). PAB led to RV dilatation, extensive myocardial fibrosis, and RV dysfunction in MC+/+ mice. In PAB KitW/KitW-v mice, RV remodeling was characterized by minimal RV chamber dilatation and preserved RV function. We further administered to C57Bl/6J mice either placebo or cromolyn treatment starting from day 1 or 7 days after PAB surgery to test whether mast cells stabilizing drugs can prevent or reverse maladaptive RV remodeling. Both preventive and therapeutic cromolyn applications significantly attenuated RV dilatation and improved RV function. Our study establishes a previously undescribed role of mast cells in pressure overload-induced adverse RV remodeling. Mast cells may thus represent an interesting target for the development of a new therapeutic approach directed specifically at the heart.  相似文献

The continuous extrusion of micro‐textured isotactic polypropylene (i‐PP) film and its tribological properties are reported. As analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, a rectangular‐semicircular micro‐patterned die successfully produced extruded cast‐films with hill‐like micro‐texture. Such films displayed static and kinetic coefficients of friction (COFs and COFk) values of 0.247 ± 0.028 and 0.245 ± 0.003, respectively, for a steel fixture sliding along the micro‐texture of the film. The equivalent COFs and COFk values for non‐textured (NT) films were 0.369 ± 0.036 and 0.340 ± 0.024, respectively, confirming that textured films displayed a reduction in COF of about 30%. For textured and NT films sliding on textured films, the COFk values were even lower at 0.161 ± 0.013 and 0.113 ± 0.004, which represents about 20–40% reduction as compared with that for the NT‐NT counterparts. Films coated with a silicone lubricant displayed COFs and COFk values of 0.334 ± 0.042 and 0.099 ± 0.012, respectively, for NT films sliding over lubricated NT films, and 0.426 ± 0.031 and 0.063 ± 0.006, respectively, for textured films sliding over lubricated textured films. The COFk values for textured/non‐lubricated films approach those of NT/lubricated films, indicating that micro‐textured polypropylene films may be used in environmentally sensitive applications where lubricants and fluorinated additives may not be used for reducing friction. A series of templated carbons with various high surface areas (2033–3798 m2/g) have been prepared using various microporous zeolites as hard templates. Molecular hydrogen storage and spiltover hydrogen storage on these templated carbons were investigated and compared with superactivated carbon AX-21 and other reported porous carbon sorbents at 298 K and 100 atm. Two relationships between the surface areas of these carbons and their hydrogen capacities were obtained. The relationship between molecular hydrogen capacity and surface area showed a 0.23 wt.% H2/1000 m2/g of carbon sorbent at 298 K and 100 atm, indicating that merely increasing surface areas of the carbon sorbents cannot achieve a significant molecular hydrogen capacity at ambient temperature. Spiltover hydrogen storage was achieved by doping Pt nanoparticles (as dissociative hydrogen source) on these carbons (spiltover hydrogen receptor). Our first result on the relationship between the spiltover hydrogen capacity and surface area showed 0.4 wt.% H2/1000 m2/g of carbon sorbent at 298 K and 100 atm, which indicated that storage via spillover can lead to an average of 70% enhancement compared to molecular hydrogen storage.  相似文献

We report a cost effective and facile way to synthesize flexible, uniform, and large area surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates using an oblique angle deposition (OAD) technique. The flexible SERS substrates consist of 1 μm long, tilted silver nanocolumnar films deposited on flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) sheets using OAD. The SERS enhancement activity of these flexible substrates was determined using 10(-5) M trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl) ethylene (BPE) Raman probe molecules. The in situ SERS measurements on these flexible substrates under mechanical (tensile/bending) strain conditions were performed. Our results show that flexible SERS substrates can withstand a tensile strain (ε) value as high as 30% without losing SERS performance, whereas the similar bending strain decreases the SERS performance by about 13%. A cyclic tensile loading test on flexible PDMS SERS substrates at a pre-specified tensile strain (ε) value of 10% shows that the SERS intensity remains almost constant for more than 100 cycles. These disposable and flexible SERS substrates can be integrated with biological substances and offer a novel and practical method to facilitate biosensing applications.  相似文献

The chemical industry is one of the key industrial sectors in Germany and at the same time one of the largest consumers of energy and raw materials. A successful energy transition and the development of a circular economy can only succeed if they are actively supported and shaped by the chemical industry – through the redesign of existing production processes and the exploration and implementation of new process routes. The challenge is to realize this transformation within a very short time and for many production processes, whereby a much larger number of process routes must be explored. Digital technologies are key to master this transformation towards more sustainability, climate, and environmental protection. The KEEN project aims to explore and leverage artificial intelligence (AI) opportunities in process industry. The newly developed AI methods are tested wherever possible in real working environments and production plants to prove the economic benefit, applicability, and reliability of the methods and technologies.  相似文献

Integrins, a widely expressed family of heterodimeric cell surface adhesion proteins, are expressed in a variety of cell types. They play a decisive role in cell-cell adhesion or cell to extracellular matrix adhesion events. Antagonists of alpha(v)beta(3) or alpha(IIb)beta(3) integrin may have a potential use in suppression of pathological processes. We present the synthesis of novel tricyclic benzodiazepinedione-based RGD analogues, which were subsequently tested in a solid-phase receptor assay in order to investigate their binding affinities towards alpha(v)beta(3) and alpha(IIb)beta(3) integrin.  相似文献

The lattice constants of boron carbides have been determined by powder X-ray diffraction for samples with compositions between about 7.7 and 20.5 at.% carbon. The boundaries of the single-phase region are at about 9 at.% carbon and near, but likely somewhat less than, 20 at.% carbon. The composition dependence of the lattice constants thus established provides a method of assessing the carbon concentration of unknown materials. In particular, assignment of the approximate composition of single crystals used in previous studies allows for a systematic examination of changes in interatomic separation as a function of composition. These changes are discussed in terms of a structural model of the boron carbide solid solution.  相似文献
