Oxidative stress has been linked with a variety of diseases, being involved in the debut and/or progress of several neurodegenerative disorders. This review intends to summarize some of the findings that correlate the overproduction of reactive oxygen species with the pathophysiology of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Oxidative stress was also noted to modify the inflammatory response. Even though oxidative stress and neuroinflammation are two totally different pathological events, they are linked and affect one another. Nonetheless, there are still several mechanisms that need to be understood regarding the onset and the progress of neurodegenerative diseases in order to develop efficient therapies. As antioxidants are a means to alter oxidative stress and slow down the symptoms of these neurodegenerative diseases, the most common antioxidants, enzymatic as well as non-enzymatic, have been mentioned in this paper as therapeutic options for the discussed disorders.  相似文献

Low back pain (LBP) represents a frequent and debilitating condition affecting a large part of the global population and posing a worldwide health and economic burden. The major cause of LBP is intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD), a complex disease that can further aggravate and give rise to severe spine problems. As most of the current treatments for IDD either only alleviate the associated symptoms or expose patients to the risk of intraoperative and postoperative complications, there is a pressing need to develop better therapeutic strategies. In this respect, the present paper first describes the pathogenesis and etiology of IDD to set the framework for what has to be combated to restore the normal state of intervertebral discs (IVDs), then further elaborates on the recent advances in managing IDD. Specifically, there are reviewed bioactive compounds and growth factors that have shown promising potential against underlying factors of IDD, cell-based therapies for IVD regeneration, biomimetic artificial IVDs, and several other emerging IDD therapeutic options (e.g., exosomes, RNA approaches, and artificial intelligence).  相似文献

Prognosis after myocardial infarction (MI) varies greatly depending on the extent of damaged area and the management of biological processes during recovery. Reportedly, the inhibition of the pro-inflammatory S100A9 reduces myocardial damage after MI. We hypothesize that a S100A9 blockade induces changes of major signaling pathways implicated in post-MI healing. Mass spectrometry-based proteomics and gene analyses of infarcted mice left ventricle were performed. The S100A9 blocker (ABR-23890) was given for 3 days after coronary ligation. At 3 and 7 days post-MI, ventricle samples were analyzed versus control and Sham-operated mice. Blockade of S100A9 modulated the expressed proteins involved in five biological processes: leukocyte cell–cell adhesion, regulation of the muscle cell apoptotic process, regulation of the intrinsic apoptotic signaling pathway, sarcomere organization and cardiac muscle hypertrophy. The blocker induced regulation of 36 proteins interacting with or targeted by the cellular tumor antigen p53, prevented myocardial compensatory hypertrophy, and reduced cardiac markers of post-ischemic stress. The blockade effect was prominent at day 7 post-MI when the quantitative features of the ventricle proteome were closer to controls. Blockade of S100A9 restores key biological processes altered post-MI. These processes could be valuable new pharmacological targets for the treatment of ischemic heart. Mass‐adoption of thin‐film silicon (TF‐Si) photovoltaic modules as a renewable energy source can be viable if the cost of electricity production from the module is competitive with conventional energy solutions. Increased module performance (electrical power generated) is an approach to reduce this cost. Progress towards higher conversion efficiencies for ‘champion’ large area modules paves the way for mass‐production module performance to follow. At TEL Solar AG, Trübbach, Switzerland, significant progress in the absolute stabilized module conversion efficiency has been achieved through optimized solar cell design that integrates high‐quality amorphous and microcrystalline TF‐Si‐deposited materials with efficient light management and transparent conductive oxide layers in a tandem MICROMORPH™ module. This letter reports a world record large area (1.43 m2) stabilized module conversion efficiency of 12.34% certified by the European Solar Test Installation; an increase of more than 1.4% absolute compared with the previous record for a TF‐Si triple junction large area module. This breakthrough result generates more than 13.2% stabilized efficiency from each equivalent 1 cm2 of the active area of the full module. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The salted and semidried mullet (Mugil cephalus) ovary product (bottarga) is proposed as an important source of the long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), eicosapentaenoic acid, and docosahexaenoic acid. In this work, we investigated the extent of lipid oxidation and browning of grated bottarga samples during 7 mo of storage at -20 °C, 2 to 3 °C in the absence of light, and at room temperature in the presence or absence of light. Modifications of the levels of total choline (as index of phospholipid breakdown), total sugars, and free amino acids such as lysine, methionine, and tryptophan (involved in nonenzymatic browning) were also studied at different storage conditions. Storage of bottarga did not significantly affect the n-3 PUFA and cholesterol levels with respect to the control; nevertheless, a significant hydroperoxide increase was observed during 7 mo in bottarga samples at all the storage conditions, while low malondialdeyde levels were measured. Samples placed at room temperature in the absence and in the presence of light showed over time a marked browning process, lipid breakdown, a sensible decrease in the levels of total sugars, tryptophan, and methionine with respect to control and samples stored at -20 °C and 2 to 3 °C. The resistance against the oxidation of the isolated bottarga lipids was also assessed in dry state at several temperatures (37, 75, and 140 °C). PRACTICAL APPLICATION: We evaluated the change in lipid compounds and color of dried and salted mullet roes under different storage conditions. The obtained results suggest the importance of the low temperatures to preserve the nutritional properties of this fish product during long storage.  相似文献

The formation conditions of new quaternized polysulfones with chelating groups (methyl 3‐pyridyl ketone) (KQPSF) and the major factors influencing the retention process of copper ions were analyzed by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, environmental scanning electron microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. The investigations showed that the percentage of copper ions retained by KQPSF increases by increasing both the time of immersion in a CuCl2·2H2O aqueous solution, and molarity, the maximum value being attained on immersion for 48 h, at a temperature of 60°C and a molarity of 1.5 M. It can be concluded that methyl 3‐pyridyl ketone might be used for obtaining complex polysulfone structures employed by multiple applications, including wastewater purification. POLYM. Beef palatability is a complex concept and could be described through an array of features such as tenderness, juiciness and flavor traits. Improving the eating experience when consuming beef and the ability to accurately inform the consumers of the expected eating quality when the product is purchased are critical challenges. In this review, we discuss the current knowledge of quantitative and molecular genetic aspects of palatability and discuss implications of genetic manipulation for the cattle industry.  相似文献

Collaborative tagging has become an increasingly popular means for sharing and organizing Web resources, leading to a huge amount of user-generated metadata. These annotations represent quite a few different aspects of the resources they are attached to, but it is not obvious which characteristics of the objects are predominantly described. The usefulness of these tags for finding/re-finding the annotated resources is also not completely clear. Several studies have started to investigate these issues, however only by focusing on a single type of tagging system or resource. We study this problem across multiple domains and resource types and identify the gaps between the tag space and the querying vocabulary. Based on the findings of this analysis, we then try to bridge the identified gaps, focusing in particular on multimedia resources. We focus on the two scenarios of music and picture resources and develop algorithms, which identify usage (theme) and opinion (mood) characteristics of the items. The mood and theme labels our algorithms infer are recommended to the users, in order to support them during the annotation process. The evaluation of the proposed methods against user judgements, as well as against expert ground truth reveal the high quality of our recommended annotations and provide insights into possible extensions for music and picture tagging systems to support retrieval.  相似文献

Mixed‐interpenetrated polymeric networks based on sodium alginate (ALG) and poly(N‐isopropylacryl amide) (PNIPAAm) covalently cross‐linked with N,N'‐methylenebisacrylamide are studied for their biocompatibility, nontoxicity, and biodegradability aiming their application in drug delivery. The presence of drug‐polymeric matrix interactions and the distribution of the drug in the polymeric network for theophylline‐loaded ALG/PNIPAAm hydrogels are also investigated by spectroscopic and microscopic methods. The quantitative evaluation of theophylline loaded hydrogels performed by NIR‐CI technique shows a better drug entrapment and a higher homogeneity of the samples with increased alginate content. The thermal behavior of the hydrogels is significantly modified by theophylline presence. The application of the ALG/PNIPAAm hydrogels as carriers for sustained drug release formulations was assessed by the theophylline release tests performed both by in vitro and in vivo studies. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
