The continuous-time random walk (CTRW) model is useful for alleviating the computational burden of simulating diffusion in actual media. In principle, isotropic CTRW only requires knowledge of the step-size, \(P_l\), and waiting-time, \(P_t\), distributions of the random walk in the medium and it then generates presumably equivalent walks in free space, which are much faster. Here we test the usefulness of CTRW to modelling diffusion of finite-size particles in porous medium generated by loose granular packs. This is done by first simulating the diffusion process in a model porous medium of mean coordination number, which corresponds to marginal rigidity (the loosest possible structure), computing the resulting distributions \(P_l\) and \(P_t\) as functions of the particle size, and then using these as input for a free space CTRW. The CTRW walks are then compared to the ones simulated in the actual media. In particular, we study the normal-to-anomalous transition of the diffusion as a function of increasing particle size. We find that, given the same \(P_l\) and \(P_t\) for the simulation and the CTRW, the latter predicts incorrectly the size at which the transition occurs. We show that the discrepancy is related to the dependence of the effective connectivity of the porous media on the diffusing particle size, which is not captured simply by these distributions. We propose a correcting modification to the CTRW model—adding anisotropy—and show that it yields good agreement with the simulated diffusion process. We also present a method to obtain \(P_l\) and \(P_t\) directly from the porous sample, without having to simulate an actual diffusion process. BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Fetuses with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) who have a "poor prognosis" with postnatal treatment now can be identified on the basis of liver herniation, early diagnosis (before 25 weeks' gestation) and a low lung-to-head ratio (LHR). Because complete in utero repair proved unsuccessful for this group, the strategy of temporary tracheal occlusion was developed to gradually enlarge the hypoplastic fetal lung. The purpose of this study is to compare the outcome of patients in the poor-prognosis group treated by one of three methods: (1) standard postnatal care, (2) fetal tracheal occlusion via open hysterotomy, and (3) the recently developed video-fetoscopic (Fetendo) technique of tracheal occlusion without hysterotomy. METHODS: In the past 3 years, 34 of 86 fetuses with an isolated left CDH met criteria for the poor-prognosis group. Thirteen families chose postnatal treatment at an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) center, 13 underwent open fetal tracheal occlusion, and eight underwent fetoscopic tracheal occlusion. RESULTS: The survival rate was 38% in the group treated by standard postnatal therapy, 15% in the open tracheal occlusion group, and 75% in the Fetendo group. There were less postoperative pulmonary complications noted in mothers who underwent the Fetendo procedure versus the open tracheal occlusion. All but one Fetendo clip patient had a striking physiological response demonstrated by sonographic enlargement of the small left lung that was documented postnatally by plain radiographs and its subjective appearance during repair of the CDH. In contrast, only 5 of the 13 open tracheal occlusion patients demonstrated lung growth. CONCLUSION: Fetuses with a left CDH who have liver herniation and a low LHR are at high risk of neonatal demise and appear to benefit from temporary tracheal occlusion when performed fetoscopically, but not when performed by open fetal surgery. 相似文献

At the retinal level, the strategies utilized by biological visual systems allow them to outperform machine vision systems, serving to motivate the design of electronic or "smart" sensors based on similar principles. Design of such sensors in silicon first requires a model of retinal information processing which captures the essential features exhibited by biological retinas. In this paper, a simple retinal model is presented, which qualitatively accounts for the achromatic information processing in the primate cone system. The computer retina model exhibits many of the properties found in biological retinas such as data reduction through nonuniform sampling, adaptation to a large dynamic range of illumination levels, variation of visual acuity with illumination level, and enhancement of spatiotemporal contrast information. Flood disasters are the most common natural risk and tremendous efforts are spent to improve their simulation and management. However, simulation-based investigation of actions that can be taken in case of flood emergencies is rarely done. This is in part due to the lack of a comprehensive framework which integrates and facilitates these efforts. In this paper, we tackle several problems which are related to steering a flood simulation. One issue is related to uncertainty. We need to account for uncertain knowledge about the environment, such as levee-breach locations. Furthermore, the steering process has to reveal how these uncertainties in the boundary conditions affect the confidence in the simulation outcome. Another important problem is that the simulation setup is often hidden in a black-box. We expose system internals and show that simulation steering can be comprehensible at the same time. This is important because the domain expert needs to be able to modify the simulation setup in order to include local knowledge and experience. In the proposed solution, users steer parameter studies through the World Lines interface to account for input uncertainties. The transport of steering information to the underlying data-flow components is handled by a novel meta-flow. The meta-flow is an extension to a standard data-flow network, comprising additional nodes and ropes to abstract parameter control. The meta-flow has a visual representation to inform the user about which control operations happen. Finally, we present the idea to use the data-flow diagram itself for visualizing steering information and simulation results. We discuss a case-study in collaboration with a domain expert who proposes different actions to protect a virtual city from imminent flooding. The key to choosing the best response strategy is the ability to compare different regions of the parameter space while retaining an understanding of what is happening inside the data-flow system. 相似文献

In this paper we present World Lines as a novel interactive visualization that provides complete control over multiple heterogeneous simulation runs. In many application areas, decisions can only be made by exploring alternative scenarios. The goal of the suggested approach is to support users in this decision making process. In this setting, the data domain is extended to a set of alternative worlds where only one outcome will actually happen. World Lines integrate simulation, visualization and computational steering into a single unified system that is capable of dealing with the extended solution space. World Lines represent simulation runs as causally connected tracks that share a common time axis. This setup enables users to interfere and add new information quickly. A World Line is introduced as a visual combination of user events and their effects in order to present a possible future. To quickly find the most attractive outcome, we suggest World Lines as the governing component in a system of multiple linked views and a simulation component. World Lines employ linking and brushing to enable comparative visual analysis of multiple simulations in linked views. Analysis results can be mapped to various visual variables that World Lines provide in order to highlight the most compelling solutions. To demonstrate this technique we present a flooding scenario and show the usefulness of the integrated approach to support informed decision making. 相似文献

In this work we present, apply, and evaluate a novel, interactive visualization model for comparative analysis of structural variants and rearrangements in human and cancer genomes, with emphasis on data integration and uncertainty visualization. To support both global trend analysis and local feature detection, this model enables explorations continuously scaled from the high-level, complete genome perspective, down to the low-level, structural rearrangement view, while preserving global context at all times. We have implemented these techniques in Gremlin, a genomic rearrangement explorer with multi-scale, linked interactions, which we apply to four human cancer genome data sets for evaluation. Using an insight-based evaluation methodology, we compare Gremlin to Circos, the state-of-the-art in genomic rearrangement visualization, through a small user study with computational biologists working in rearrangement analysis. Results from user study evaluations demonstrate that this visualization model enables more total insights, more insights per minute, and more complex insights than the current state-of-the-art for visual analysis and exploration of genome rearrangements. 相似文献

The APSSNMP network management protocol was proposed as a secure alternative to the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) used in the TCP/IP suite. The designers claimed that it resists meet-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks. In this paper, we present an advanced MITM attack on the APSSNMP and hence show that it fails to achieve its design objective of providing better security against MITM attacks. Since the APSSNMP has been presented in several journals, and IEEE and IASTED conferences, our result is important to highlight to network implementers and users of distributed systems that the APSSNMP is not secure for practical deployment. 相似文献
