Type 1 diabetes is caused by autoreactive T cells that destroy pancreatic beta cells. Animal models suggested that a CD4+CD25+ population has a regulatory function capable of preventing activation and effector functions of autoreactive T cells. However, the role of CD4+CD25high T cells in autoimmunity and their molecular mechanisms remain the subject of investigation. We therefore evaluated T regulatory cell frequencies and their PD-1 expression in the peripheral blood of long-standing diabetics under basal conditions and after CD3/CD28 stimulation. Under basal conditions, the percentages of T regulatory cells were significantly higher while that of T effector cells were significantly lower in patients than in controls. The ratio of regulatory to effector T cells was higher in patients than that in controls, suggesting that T regulatory cells were functional in patients. Percentages of total PD-1+, PD-1low and PD-1high expressing T regulatory cells did not change in patients and in controls. After stimulation, a defect in T regulatory cell proliferation was observed in diabetics and the percentages of total PD-1+, PD-1low and PD-1high expressing cells were lower in patients. Our data suggest a defective activation of T regulatory cells in long-standing diabetics due to a lower expression of PD-1 on their surface.  相似文献

Spinel LiMn2O4 nanorods as lithium ion battery cathodes   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Spinel LiMn2O4 is a low-cost, environmentally friendly, and highly abundant material for Li-ion battery cathodes. Here, we report the hydrothermal synthesis of single-crystalline beta-MnO2 nanorods and their chemical conversion into free-standing single-crystalline LiMn2O4 nanorods using a simple solid-state reaction. The LiMn2O4 nanorods have an average diameter of 130 nm and length of 1.2 microm. Galvanostatic battery testing showed that LiMn2O4 nanorods have a high charge storage capacity at high power rates compared with commercially available powders. More than 85% of the initial charge storage capacity was maintained for over 100 cycles. The structural transformation studies showed that the Li ions intercalated into the cubic phase of the LiMn2O4 with a small change of lattice parameter, followed by the coexistence of two nearly identical cubic phases in the potential range of 3.5 to 4.3 V.  相似文献

Correlating the electronic structure and magnetic response with the morphology and crystal structure of the same single ferromagnetic nanoparticle has been up to now an unresolved challenge. Here, we present measurements of the element-specific electronic structure and magnetic response as a function of magnetic field amplitude and orientation for chemically synthesized single Fe nanocubes with 18 nm edge length. Magnetic states and interactions of monomers, dimers, and trimers are analyzed by X-ray photoemission electron microscopy for different particle arrangements. The element-specific electronic structure can be probed and correlated with the changes of magnetic properties. This approach opens new possibilities for a deeper understanding of the collective response of magnetic nanohybrids in multifunctional materials and in nanomagnetic colloidal suspensions used in biomedical and engineering technologies.  相似文献

A numerical study of heat and mass transport based on the Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes and scalar transport equations is presented to establish the predictive capabilities of algebraic flux models compared to the standard eddy-diffusivity representation. The analysis of scalar transport in simple-shear flows is initially performed to provide a basic validation of numerical techniques and scalar flux closures. The evaluation of algebraic models is carried out by examining the flow and scalar transport phenomena over a wavy wall and comparing the results to reliable direct numerical simulations. Despite the similarities with the standard gradient-diffusion hypothesis and the questionable validity of local-equilibrium conditions, the results show that algebraic models provide an efficient way to improve heat and mass transport predictions in complex flows with respect to the standard eddy-diffusivity model. The impact of abandoning the isotropic eddy-diffusivity in favor of a tensorial representation is found particularly significant in the analysis of scalar dispersion from a point source over the wavy wall, where lateral transport comes into play. While it is found that algebraic closures also represent a reasonable approximation for the spanwise scalar flux, the lateral spread of scalar concentration is considerably under-estimated by the standard gradient-diffusion model.  相似文献
