This is the final report of a panel set up by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Fusion Energy Sciences Advisory Committee (FESAC) in response to a charge letter from Dr. Ray Orbach (Appendix A). In that letter, Dr. Orbach asked FESAC for an assessment of the present status of inertial fusion energy (IFE) research carried out in contributing programs. These programs include the heavy ion (HI) beam, the high average power laser (HAPL), and Z-Pinch drivers and associated technologies, including fast ignition (FI). A computer program for meteorological radar siting, previously developed for pencil‐beam antenna, long‐range, C‐band radars, has been adapted for fan‐beam antenna, short‐range, X‐band radars. The simulator uses topographic information in the form of a raster digital elevation model and a surface backscattering cross‐section per unit area at grazing angles derived from the literature. It is independent of specific radar sites and radar systems. Its use will enhance optimized scanning strategies, antenna design tailored to mountainous terrain and knowledge of land‐clutter measurements at low grazing angles. The raster‐based approach used in implementing the program makes it compatible with any desired spatial resolution. Simplicity and short simulation times have been pursued as primary goals during the planning and implementation phases of the routines. A preliminary validation of the simulator using backscattering data acquired in the Alps is presented in this letter. 相似文献

The thermal behavior of pure ZrO2 and four ZrO2-based organic-inorganic hybrids (OIHs) containing increasing amount (6, 12, 24 and 50?wt%) of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) (named Z, ZP6, ZP12, ZP24 and ZP50 respectively) has been studied by simultaneous thermogravimetry (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The FTIR analysis of the gas mixture evolved at defined temperatures from the samples submitted to the TG experiments identified the mechanism of each thermally activated process. The obtained results suggest that the inorganic matrix of the OIHs prepared by this method exerts a stabilizing effect on the polymer, in particular for poor-PCL hybrid materials. In fact, the different thermal behavior of the ZP50 sample suggests that the polymer is not entirely bonded to the -OH groups of the zirconia matrix due to their saturation. For this reason a part of PCL is not affected by the stabilizing effect of the matrix and is subjected to thermal degradation. Finally, by observing their thermal behavior it was possible to select the most suitable temperatures for thermal pretreatment: 400, 600 and 1000?°C. The structural analysis by X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed that at 400?°C the materials are amorphous, while at 600?°C they are mostly tetragonal, and the content of the tetragonal phase decreases with increasing the amount of PCL in the OIHs. All the materials treated at 1000?°C are monoclinic, but their crystallinity decreases with increasing the PCL content. 相似文献

Lithocholic acid (LCA), a physiological ligand for the nuclear receptor FXR and the G‐protein‐coupled receptor TGR5, has been recently described as an antagonist of the EphA2 receptor, a key member of the ephrin signalling system involved in tumour growth. Given the ability of LCA to recognize FXR, TGR5, and EphA2 receptors, we hypothesized that the structural requirements for a small molecule to bind each of these receptors might be similar. We therefore selected a set of commercially available FXR or TGR5 ligands and tested them for their ability to inhibit EphA2 by targeting the EphA2‐ephrin‐A1 interface. Among the selected compounds, the stilbene carboxylic acid GW4064 was identified as an effective antagonist of EphA2, being able to block EphA2 activation in prostate carcinoma cells, in the micromolar range. This finding proposes the “target hopping” approach as a new effective strategy to discover new protein–protein interaction inhibitors. 相似文献

Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare and aggressive neoplasm of the pleural mesothelium, mainly associated with asbestos exposure and still lacking effective therapies. Modern targeted biological strategies that have revolutionized the therapy of other solid tumors have not had success so far in the MPM. Combination immunotherapy might achieve better results over chemotherapy alone, but there is still a need for more effective therapeutic approaches. Based on the peculiar disease features of MPM, several strategies for local therapeutic delivery have been developed over the past years. The common rationale of these approaches is: (i) to reduce the risk of drug inactivation before reaching the target tumor cells; (ii) to increase the concentration of active drugs in the tumor micro-environment and their bioavailability; (iii) to reduce toxic effects on normal, non-transformed cells, because of much lower drug doses than those used for systemic chemotherapy. The complex interactions between drugs and the local immune-inflammatory micro-environment modulate the subsequent clinical response. In this perspective, the main interest is currently addressed to the development of local drug delivery platforms, both cell therapy and engineered nanotools. We here propose a review aimed at deep investigation of the biologic effects of the current local therapies for MPM, including cell therapies, and the mechanisms of interaction with the tumor micro-environment. 相似文献
