Alagille syndrome: family studies

Alagille syndrome (AGS) is one of the major forms of chronic liver disease in childhood with severe morbidity and a mortality of 10 to 20%. It is characterised by cholestasis of variable severity with paucity of interlobular bile ducts and anomalies of the cardiovascular system, skeleton, eyes, and face. Previous studies suggest a wide variation in the expression of the disease and a high incidence of new mutations. To determine more accurately the rate of new mutations and to develop criteria for detecting the disorder in parents we systematically investigated parents in 14 families with an affected child. Clinical examination was supplemented by liver function tests, echocardiography, radiographic examination of the spine and forearm, ophthalmological assessment, and chromosome analysis. Six parents had typical anomalies in two or more systems pointing to the presence of autosomal dominant inheritance. Systematic screening of parents for the features defined in this study should improve the accuracy of genetic counselling.     

Comparison of physical property-porosity behaviour with minimum solid area models

An extensive survey of the porosity dependence of (room temperature) physical properties shows that mechanical properties and electrical and thermal conductivity, i.e. properties dependent on the local flux or fields in the material, follow minimum solid area models. This is shown extensively for elastic properties and tensile (flexure) strength, but consistency with other properties, e.g. compressive strength, hardness, electrical and thermal conductivity is also shown. Although data for ceramics is most extensive, data for rocks, metals, and carbon are included, since the consistency of these, especially of metals with ceramics, provides important support for the minimum solid area concept. While porosity characterization is generally minimal, expected model trends with pore character are corroborated by correlating processing and resultant expected pore character with porosity-property results. It is argued that properties dependent on mass should be better fit by a linear, i.e. rule of mixture, relationship between such properties and porosity. Support for this is shown in dielectric constant-porosity data.     

Local synthesis of immunoglobulins in neuropathies

It is essential to know how the immune system acts in different neurological diseases, some of them non very well known or of unknown etiology at all. It was applied Reiber and Felgenhauer's formula in 56 patients with different diseases. IgA, IgM, IgG and albumin were quantified in sera and cerebrospinal fluid by simple immunodiffusion. It was observed more frequent IgG local synthesis and IgA in this sample.     

Outbreak of vampire bat biting in a Venezuelan village

An outbreak of 154 cases of vampire bat biting in a four-month period in the gold mine of Payapal, a Venezuelan village, is reported. All patients were bitten during the night and the most bites were on their toes. No complication attributed to the bite was reported. Diagnoses of rabies virus made by means of immunofluorescence were negative. A possible reason for this outbreak may been the development of mining areas, with the inhabitants providing an alternative food source for the bats.
