Digital inequality can take many forms. Four forms studied here are access to Internet, use of different devices, extent of usage, and engagement in different Internet activities. However, it is not clear whether sociodemographic factors, or devices, are more influential in usage and activities. Results from an unfamiliar context show that there are significant sociodemographic influences on access, device, usage, and activities, and differences in activities by device type and usage. While sociodemographic differences are more influential, device type can increase likelihood of use for some “capital enhancing” activities, but only for a computer. Thus, although mobile Internet is available for those on the wrong side of the digital divide, these users do not engage in many activities, decreasing potential benefits.  相似文献

Lead Zirconium Titanium Oxide (PZT) thin films were prepared at low temperature using a SMI Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition SpinCVD? tool. Films prepared by this technique were evaluated for multiple device applications. The low temperature PZT film process addresses problems with device manufacture encountered by techniques that rely on high thermal budgets to obtain superior materials properties. Film growth processes were developed based on the following criteria: low defect density, a high necked and dense microstructure, and highly uniform properties across the wafer. The growth process, ferroelectric film properties, and suitability for IR sensing and FRAM applications are discussed.  相似文献

In this paper, we present the true Cramer-Rao lower bounds (CRLBs) for the estimation of phase offset for common quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), PSK, and PAM signals in AWGN channels. It is shown that the same analysis also applies to the QAM, FSK, and PAM CRLBs for frequency offset estimation. The ratio of the modulated to the unmodulated CRLBs is derived for all QAM, PSK, and PAM signals and calculated for specific cases of interest. This is useful to determine the limiting performance of synchronization circuits for coherent receivers without the need to simulate particular algorithms. The hounds are compared to the existing true CRLBs for an unmodulated carrier wave (CW), BPSK, and QPSK. We investigated new and existing QAM phase estimation algorithms in order to verify the new phase CRLB. This showed that new minimum distance estimator performs close to the QAM bound and provides a large improvement over the power law estimator at moderate to high signal-to-noise ratios  相似文献

Underwater acoustic networks are generally formed by acoustically connected ocean bottom sensor nodes, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), and surface stations that serve as gateways and provide radio communication links to on-shore stations. The quality of service of such networks is limited by the low bandwidth of acoustic transmission channels, high latency resulting from the slow propagation of sound, and elevated noise levels in some environments. The long-term goal in the design of underwater acoustic networks is to provide for a self-configuring network of distributed nodes with network links that automatically adapt to the environment through selection of the optimum system parameters. This article considers several aspects in the design of shallow water acoustic networks that maximize throughput and reliability while minimizing power consumption  相似文献

This paper describes the use of a polyphase filterbank to perform the interpolations required for symbol timing synchronization in a sampled-data receiver. The polyphase filterbank possesses advantages over architectures based on separate matched and interpolation filters. Interpolations are realized by filterbank index selection and a separate interpolating filter following the matched filter is not required. Maximum likelihood timing synchronization techniques can be easily incorporated into the polyphase filter bank in a natural way. An M-stage polyphase filterbank with input data sampled at approximately N samples/symbol can be used in a loop that operates at MN samples/symbol, N samples/symbol, or 1 sample/symbol. When operating at 1 sample/symbol, auxiliary control must also be included to adjust the clocking of data into the filter bank to account for small differences in the sample clock and N times the data clock. A selectionist theory states that violence by males toward male peers originally served specific functions and violence to female peers served others. Differences in self-reported victimization and perpetration in studies of 1,452 high school students were hypothesized. In Study 1, male-to-male aggression was reported to be more prevalent than male-to-female aggression. For male-to-male aggression, perpetrator reports agreed with or exceeded victim reports, and victims were more often strangers than close friends. In contrast, for male-to-female aggression, there were consistently fewer reports from perpetrators than from victims, and victims were less often strangers than girlfriends. Study 2 obtained similar findings for reported frequency, number of victims and perpetrators, and sexual aggression. Study 3 showed that girls' aggression contrasted with that by boys with respect to intra- versus intersex aggression and perpetrator–victim agreement. Time-resolved absorption difference spectra of membrane suspensions of bovine rhodopsin at pH 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 were collected in the time range from 1 micro s to 200 ms after laser photolysis with 7-ns pulses of 477-nm light. The data were analyzed using singular value decomposition (SVD) and global exponential fitting. At pH 7 the data agree well with previously obtained data (Thorgeirsson et al. (1993) Biochemistry 32, 13861-13872) with fits improved at all pH's by inclusion of a small component due to an absorbance change caused by rotational diffusion which is detectable even at magic angle polarization. A "square scheme" suggested to best explain the previous data, which involves two branches following decay of the lumi intermediate with pathways (1) lumi --> MI480 right harpoon over left harpoon MII and (2) lumi right harpoon over left harpoon MI380 --> MII, could be confirmed throughout the entire pH range. However, to account for the increased rate of the MII --> MI480 reaction in path 1 for rising pH values, we propose that the MII in the square scheme consists of deprotonated MII and protonated MIIH+ forms in rapid equilibrium with each other, resulting in an extended square scheme and increasing the number of 380-nm products from two to three. In addition to the kinetic processes described by the extended square scheme, above pH 8 fast ( approximately 10 micro s) and slow ( approximately 50 ms) components were found. The fast component was assigned to the decay of a blue-shifted lumi intermediate, and the slow component, resolvable only at pH 10, was assigned to formation of a 450 nm absorbing photoproduct.  相似文献

Over the past 14 years, 2079 patients have been seen at our institution with renal trauma. Of these, 84 sustained gunshot wounds (81 unilateral, 3 bilateral; a total of 87 renal units). We evaluated this group to characterize the nature of their injuries and establish a methodology for renal salvage and reconstruction. Preoperative radiographic staging was performed with excretory urography (IVP) or computed tomographic (CT) scanning. The injuries were classified into five categories: 16 contusions (18.4%), 12 minor lacerations (13.8%), 44 major lacerations (50.5%), six vascular injuries (6.9%), and nine combination laceration and vascular injury (10.3%). Most patients had multiple organ injuries, with 79 requiring associated surgical procedures (94%). The mean injury Severity Score (ISS) was 26.7 (range, 4-59). Based on radiographic and clinical staging criteria, 69 renal injuries were surgically explored (79.3%), and 12 patients underwent nephrectomy (13.8%). Forty-six renal units were reconstructed (66.6%) by various methods, including renorrhaphy, omental pedical flaps, mesh or peritoneal patch grafts, partial nephrectomy, and vascular repair. Overall, 75 renal units were salvaged (86.2%). Early renal vascular control was achieved in all patients who underwent renal exploration. Follow-up functional studies were done in 24 (28.5%): none had delayed nephrectomy or postinjury hypertension. Overall, 79 patients survived (94%); however, mortality was not related to renal injury. These findings suggest that aggressive radiographic staging coupled with early vascular control and careful selection of reconstructive techniques can ensure a high renal salvage rate in patients with renal gunshot injuries.  相似文献
