Two-dimensional E-field mapping with subpicosecond temporal resolution

A new contactless reflection-mode electro-optic sampling technique is described which is capable of characterising the electrical response of microstructures in two dimensions with micrometre spatial resolution, a temporal response of a fraction of a picosecond and millivolt sensitivity. A GaAs-based sampling technique which would have minimum interference with the test circuit is also proposed.

Analysis and Design of RF CMOS Attenuators

Attenuators are analyzed for their minimum Insertion Loss (IL), maximum attenuation and source-load matching performance. These results are used to make trade-offs in the design of a CMOS attenuator with wide dynamic range, designed and fabricated in a 0.13 mum CMOS process. The design employs two non-identical cascaded T-stages that are activated consecutively to improve linearity. The design operates in the frequency band of DC-2.5 GHz with 0.9-3.5 dB insertion loss and 42 dB maximum attenuation in the entire frequency range. Worst case S11 is - 8.2 dB across the frequency band. The design achieves an IIP3 of + 20 dBm at mid-attenuation.

FULLSPECTRUM: a new PV wave making more efficient use of the solar spectrum

The project FULLSPECTRUM — an Integrated Project (IP) in the terminology of the European Commission — pursues a better exploitation of the FULL solar SPECTRUM by (1) further developing concepts already scientifically proven but not yet developed and (2) by trying to prove new ones in the search for a breakthrough in photovoltaic (PV) technology. More specific objectives are the development of: (a) III–V multijunction cells (MJC), (b) solar thermo-photovoltaic (TPV) converters, (c) intermediate band (IB) materials and cells (IBC), (d) molecular-based concepts (MBC) for full PV utilisation of the solar spectrum and (e) manufacturing technologies (MFG) for novel concepts including assembling. MJC technology towards 40% efficiency will be developed using lower cost substrates and high light concentration (up or above 1000 suns). TPV is a concept with a theoretically high efficiency limit because the entire energy of all the photons is used in the heating process and because the non-used photons can be fed back to the emitter, therefore helping in keeping it hot. In the IBC approach, sub-bandgap photons are exploited by means of an IB. Specific IB materials will be sought by direct synthesis suggested by material-band calculations and using nanotechnology in quantum dot (QD) IBCs. In the development of the MBC, topics such as the development of two-photon dye cells and the development of a static global (direct and diffuse) light concentrator by means of luminescent multicolour dyes and QDs, with the radiation confined by photonic crystals, will be particularly addressed. MFG include optoelectronic assembling techniques and coupling of light to cells with new-optic miniconcentrators.     

A fixed point multiple shooting method

A simple iterative procedure is proposed for calculating the solution of a certain class of boundary value problems for ordinary differential equations. It works if the equation can be transformed into a contracting fixed point problem by means of a Green's function. It is similar to multiple shooting but much simpler.     

A protein phosphatase 2C involved in ABA signal transduction in Arabidopsis thaliana

The plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA) mediates various responses such as stomatal closure, the maintenance of seed dormancy, and the inhibition of plant growth. All three responses are affected in the ABA-insensitive mutant abi1 of Arabidopsis thaliana, suggesting that an early step in the signaling of ABA is controlled by the ABI1 locus. The ABI1 gene was cloned by chromosome walking, and a missense mutation was identified in the structural gene of the abi1 mutant. The ABI1 gene encodes a protein with high similarity to protein serine or threonine phosphatases of type 2C with the novel feature of a putative Ca2+ binding site. Thus, the control of the phosphorylation state of cell signaling components by the ABI1 product could mediate pleiotropic hormone responses.
