This paper presents a VLSI embodiment of an optical tracking computational sensor which focuses attention on a salient target in its field of view. Using both low-latency massive parallel processing and top-down sensory adaptation, the sensor suppresses interference front features irrelevant for the task at hand, and tracks a target of interest at speeds of up to 7000 pixels/s. The sensor locks onto the target to continuously provide control for the execution of a perceptually guided activity. The sensor prototype, a 24×24 array of cells, is built in 2-μm CMOS technology. OBJECTIVE: Pooled bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), the return of lavage, contains both bronchial and alveolar material which differ from each other. Artifacts may be created by filtering, centrifuging and washing cells before cytopreparation. This study presents reference values of healthy volunteers for the alveolar sample, ALF, cytopreparation being performed without filtration or centrifugation. METHODS: Eighteen healthy, non-smoking volunteers underwent a standard bronchoalveolar lavage using 10 aliquots of 20 ml of saline. Excluding the return of the first and second aliquots, the rest were pooled and examined cytologically, immunocytochemically and biochemically. The mean, standard deviation, and 95% confidence limits were calculated for the following variables: amount of return, estimated content of epithelial lining fluid (ELF), total and differential cell counts on filter and cytocentrifuge (CCF) preparations, computed cell counts per unit volume of ALF, distribution of lymphocyte subgroups CD3+CD2, CD4, CD8, CD19, CD25 and CD57, and the ratio of CD4 to CD8, the amounts of lymphocytes in the same subgroups per volume of ALF, and the concentrations of total protein, albumin, immunoglobulins A, G and M, hyaluronic acid, eosinophilic cationic protein (ECP), procollagen III aminoterminal propeptide (PCP) and beta 2-microglobulin in ALF and in ELF, as well as the ratios of the concentrations of the solutes in ALF to the same in serum. RESULTS: The 95% confidence limits of means for the most important variables were as follows: estimated ELF content 0.42-0.74%; total cells in ALF 76.6-143.0 x 10(6) l-1; distribution of inflammatory cells on filter and CCF slides: macrophages 74.9-83.6 and 81.4-90.1%, lymphocytes 13.1-22.5 and 8.1-16.4%, and neutrophils 1.0-4.1 and 0.7-2.7%, respectively; distribution of lymphocyte subsets: CD3+CD2 85.6-90.6%, CD4 44.3-53.1%, CD8 26.9-35.8%; concentration of solutes in ALF: total protein 44.8-61.3 mg l-1, albumin 15.4-22.2 mg l-1, IgA 1.8-3.4 mg l-1, IgG 3.1-6.1 mg l-1, IgM 0.05-0.26 mg l-1, hyaluronic acid 8.8-11.1 micrograms l-1, ECP 0.19-0.77 micrograms l-1, PCP 0.005-0.58 micrograms l-1, beta 2-microglobulin 62.2-81.5 micrograms l-1. CONCLUSIONS: Our results show that excluding the bronchial sample from ALF of volunteer subjects and omitting filtering and washing before cytopreparation produces cytologic, immunocytochemical and biochemical reference values with reasonable 95% confidence limits to be used in clinical settings. 相似文献

The problem of parametrizing single hidden layer scalar neural networks with continuous activation functions is investigated. A connection is drawn between realization theory for linear dynamical systems, rational functions, and neural networks that appears to be new. A result of this connection is a general parametrization of such neural networks in terms of strictly proper rational functions. Some existence and uniqueness results are derived. Jordan decompositions are developed, which show how the general form can be expressed in terms of a sum of canonical second order sections. The catalytic activity of a wide range of transition metal oxides in oxidation of sulphide ions by air in aqueous medium was studied. Some specific features of the reaction mechanism on some of the studied oxides were considered. The transition metal oxides are promising catalysts for practical application. Business process redesign (BPR) has been widely touted as a means for leveraging the power of information technology to change business processes radically, resulting in substantial improvements in organizational effectiveness and efficiency. This study represents an early attempt at examining the strategic nature of the phenomenon. Because BPR is radical change and has the ability to alter both the competitive and operational nature of the corporation, it is critical that BPR be coordinated with corporate strategy. Through a survey of information system executives, the relationships between corporate competitive strategy and three types of BPR – intrafunctional, interfunctional and interorganizational – were examined. It was found that organizations following a cost strategy tended to do more BPR projects on interfunctional processes. Furthermore, the positive effect of a cost strategy on interfunctional BPR was found to be strengthened by the degree of integration of IS and business planning. It was also found that while interorganizational BPR was not related to a specific strategy, it was strongly related directly with IS–business planning integration. 相似文献

The adult songbird forebrain undergoes neuronal production throughout adulthood, with the production of new neurons in discrete regions of the neostriatal ventricular zone. Upon mitogenesis, these new neurons migrate into the subjacent brain parenchyma along radially directed guide fibers. In long-term ventricular zone explant cultures, derived from the higher vocal center of the adult canary, newly migratory neurons were found to associate preferentially with a characteristic substrate cell type. These small, parvonuclear substrate cells formed tightly packed epithelioid sheets, in which ciliated ependymal cells were common, as recognized by both live observation and electron microscopy. A subpopulation of these cells was immunostained by monoclonal antibody 3A7, which preferentially stains the guide fiber network of the adult avian brain. These 3A7+ cells included ependymal cells and bipolar radial cells, as well as morphologically defined astrocytes. As they matured in vitro, the 3A7+ bipolar radial cells extended long, unbranching fibers, which ultimately traversed the culture substrate. Like ependymal cells, they supported neuronal migration. These cells were likely homologous to radial guide cells in vivo. Thus, neuronal migration in adult avian forebrain culture occurred upon guide cells of ependymal derivation. 相似文献

The memory of hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) for the flank scent of older male hamsters was investigated in a series of habituation experiments. In 2 types of habituation tasks (Exps 1 and 2), male hamsters habituated to the flank scent of 1 male and then increased their level of investigation to that of a novel male; similar results were obtained when the intervals between trials ranged from 1 sec to 2 days. When the test trial was 10 or 21 days after habituation (Exp 3), males discriminated between familiar and novel flank scents at 10 days but not at 21 days. The results demonstrate recognition of familiar and unfamiliar individual odors and excellent memory for these differences. Our purpose was to compare prospectively the sensitivity of contrast-enhanced magnetisation transfer (MT) MRI and gradient-echo (GE) T1-weighted images in metastatic disease of the brain. We studied 52 patients with brain metastases, using conventional T1-weighted GE and MT spin-echo (SE) images after the same standard dose of gadolinium. Axial 5-mm reconstructions of GE data were compared with 5-mm MT images in the same plane. Metastases were counted independently by two neuroradiologists. In 12 patients (23%) MT imaging showed more metastases than GE images (P = 0.03). We detected 68 more metastases with the former technique. 相似文献
