Experiments in which a normal-to-superconducting (NS) boundary is created in an originally superconducting bar of bulk YBa2Cu 3O7-x is described. The first noise measurements associated with such a boundary are presented. A high-density (5.20 g-cm -3) sample (sample A) and a low density (4.23 g-cm-3 ) sample (sample B) have been investigated. Common to both samples is 1/f2 noise observed in the frequency region between about 15 and 50 Hz that can be associated with the NS boundary itself. Sample A also exhibits conventional 1/f noise as expected for the normal part of the boundary, below about 15 Hz. In contrast, sample B shows 1/f1.5 noise in this region; since the sample contains considerably fewer small grains than sample A, any 1/f noise is presumably masked in B. It is suggested that the 1/f2 noise might be associated with flux-flow noise  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Adynamic bone disease (ABD) has been described in the current dialysis population to have an unexpectedly high prevalence. Moreover, it is clearly more prevalent in CAPD patients, compared to haemodialysis patients. Recently we demonstrated that both a low (< or = 27 U/1) level of bone alkaline phosphatase (BAP) as determined by an optimized agarose gel electrophoretic technique and a low (< or = 150 pg/ml ) level of iPTH are good markers of ABD with sensitivities of 78.1% and 80.6% and specificities of 86.4% and 76.2% respectively. METHODS: In this study (n = 212), the prevalence of ABD in the European CAPD population was evaluated by means of these biochemical markers. Clinical data on the patients included were recorded at the moment of blood sampling. In patients under CAPD treatment for longer than 9 months, we calculated an index of calcium exposure through PD fluid. RESULTS: In this population with a low exposure to aluminium, the prevalence of ABD as indicated by either a low level of BAP or PTH was 43%. The following risk factors could be identified: advanced age, shorter time on renal replacement therapy, male gender, and high calcium content of PD fluid. The index of calcium exposure was significantly higher in the patients with low BAP and low iPTH levels compared to those with either BAP > or = 27 U/1 or iPTH > 150 pg/ml. The latter finding gives further support to the hypothesis that a high calcium load administered to renal failure patients may lead to 'oversuppressed' parathyroids in ABD. In a subgroup of patients with a high level of BAP associated with a low iPTH level a profile previously shown to be associated in the presence of aluminium overload, significantly higher serum aluminium levels were noted. suggesting that even in patients with low exposure to aluminium, this element still can affect bone metabolism. CONCLUSION: A high prevalence of ABD--as diagnosed by biochemical markers--was observed in the European CAPD population. A number of risk factors could be put forward. The aetiology and pathogenesis of this type of renal osteodystrophy remain to be elucidated, but appear, however, to be multifactorial.  相似文献

The Special Surveillance Breast Program (SSBP) is a long-term, comprehensive, multidisciplinary program for women determined to be at high risk for the development of breast cancer. Because the women who attend this program are otherwise healthy but concerned about their risk for breast cancer, current and relevant information is required to address their concerns regarding the possibility of developing breast cancer. The purpose of this article is to describe the risk factors that indicate eligibility for the program, the structure of the program, and the results of an assessment that identified the needs of this special population.  相似文献

A database has been compiled with the levels of important contaminants (mycotoxins, heavy metals and pesticides) measured from 2002 to 2005 in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum) grown in Belgium according to the organic and conventional farming systems. Assuming no further change in contaminant levels during cereal processing and during the preparation of foodstuffs, conservative intakes are estimated for the consumers of cereal-based products such as flour, bread, breakfast cereals, dough and pastry. The results show that for the consumer of organic foodstuffs, estimated daily intakes are 0.56 µg deoxynivalenol (DON), 0.03 µg zearalenone (ZEA), 0.19 µg Cd, 0.28 µg Pb and 0.0006 µg Hg kg-1 body weight, taking into account the average contaminant levels in unprocessed grains and the average cereal products consumptions in Belgium. For the consumers of conventional foodstuffs, the corresponding estimated daily intakes are 0.99 µg DON, 0.06 µg ZEA, 0.17 µg Cd, 0.12 µg Pb and 0.0007 µg Hg kg-1 body weight. In addition, it appears that for the consumers of conventional products, intakes of some post-harvest insecticides have to be taken into account (0.11 µg chlorpyriphos-methyl, 0.2 µg dichlorvos and 0.24 µg pirimiphos-methyl kg-1 bw). When expressed as a percentage of the tolerable/acceptable daily intake (TDI/ADI), it seems that the corresponding estimated (conservative) intakes are the highest for DON (56% for organic and 99% for conventional cereal products), ZEA (16% for organic and 32% for conventional cereal products), and Cd (19% for organic and 17% for conventional cereal products), all other estimated intakes of contaminants (including pesticides) being lower than 10% of the TDI/ADI.  相似文献

We have developed a method to identify and map the internationally most visible research topics occurring in the social and behavioral sciences, as well as the topics which changed most over a decade. Methods and data relevent to a portfolio analysis of national research efforts are described. Keywords used by authors in scientific or scholarly publications provide a window on scientific developments and changes in scientific research. Using an interdisciplinary database, the SSCI, developments in publications were traced world-wide and for the US, UK, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. We compared two periods: 1981–85 and 1986–90 We discuss the major substantive developments occurring during 1981–1990, as visible in maps depicting both topics and disciplines. It is shown that the maps, enriched with scientometric indicators of strengths and weaknesses of national research efforts, can be important tools for science policy. The findings indicate that the research front on many topics in both social and behavioral sciences is international in the late 1980s.  相似文献

In this study, pervaporation experiments were performed with methanol-water mixtures, ethanol-water mixtures, IPA (isopropyl alcohol)-water mixtures, and acetic acid-water mixtures, over the complete concentration range allowed by the membrane (Pervap 2201, Sulzer). The results of the three water-alcohol mixtures are compared to investigate the influence of molecular weight and polarity on the permeation behavior. The results show that ethanol and IPA have a similar permeation behavior, whereas methanol shows a different behavior. This can be explained by the relatively high polarity of methanol, which makes methanol sorption competitive with water sorption. The IPA-water mixtures are compared with the acetic acid-water mixtures. IPA and acetic acid have approximately the same molecular weight, but contain a different functional group. The acetic acid-water mixtures have a higher total flux than the IPA-water mixtures. Moreover, the partial acetic acid flux is higher than the partial IPA flux. Acetic acid contains a carbonyl group, which has a high capacity of forming hydrogen bonds with the alcohol groups of the PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) top layer. Moreover, it is a large molecule, causing high swelling resulting in a high permeation flux and a low separation factor. The behavior of the acetic acid-water mixtures shows more resemblance to the methanol-water mixtures than to the IPA-water mixtures. This suggests that the polarity and functional group of the different feed components is more important than the molecular size.  相似文献

Researchers using lateralized stimuli have suggested that the left hemisphere is sensitive to sentence-level context, whereas the right hemisphere (RH) primarily processes word-level meaning. The authors investigated this message-blind RH model by measuring associative priming with event-related brain potentials (ERPs). For word pairs in isolation, associated words elicited more positive ERPs than unassociated words with similar magnitudes and onset latencies in both visual fields. Embedded in sentences, these same pairs showed large sentential context effects in both fields. Small effects of association were observed, confined to incongruous sentences after right visual hemifield presentation but present for both congruous and incongruous sentences after left visual hemifield presentation. Results do not support the message-blind RH model but do suggest hemispheric asymmetries in the use of word and sentence context during real-time processing.
