Studies of elemental distributions within discrete coal macerals: Use of secondary ion mass spectrometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Secondary ion mass spectrometry has been used to measure qualitatively the distributions of many trace and minor elements within some well-characterized coal macerals: vitrinite, fusinite and exinite. Complementary information was obtained by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Within the vitrinite specimens studied, a widely-dispersed largely inorganic aluminosilicate phase was identified, which contained a number of other trace elements. By contrast, within the organic-rich phase of this macerai, titanium was detected in a very even distribution; this suggests that some titanium may be bonded in an organic complex. The fusinite was shown to contain elevated concentrations of calcium, magnesium and fluorine, dispersed over a large portion of the maceral. The high fluorine content could be identified as an organo-fluoro compound using XPS. Exinite was found to contain lower concentrations of most elements, compared to other macerals. The organic composition of this maceral was significantly different from that of surrounding macerals; this could be seen from the enhanced emission of the C₂H₂-secondary ion and images of this ion thus clearly outlined the position of such macerals.     

Creating a Student Centered Learning Environment at the University of Denver

A team of faculty members at the University of Denver changed the learning environment in key courses in the Department of Engineering from predominately teacher centered to student centered. Through this funded project new grading methods were implemented, classrooms were renovated and wired with studio layouts to facilitate learning, the Engineering Circuits Laboratory was rewired and instrumented for automated data acquisition and reporting, and two new pedagogical approaches were developed. At the onset of the project, six goals were established related to student learning. The introduction of industry standard hardware and software provided students with unprecedented hands‐on experience and project related activities stimulated faculty innovations in other current and future courses. Assessment results indicate that the new grading system improved the clarity of expectations for students before assignments were given resulting in increased reported motivation for learning in many courses. Even though course GPAs did not always reflect higher achievement on graded work, faculty members firmly believe that deeper understanding was achieved because more complex material was assimilated.     

Multiobjective evaluation of advanced manufacturing system technology investments with risk

Advanced manufacturing system technologies are difficult to evaluate using ordinary financial measures owing to the presence of risk and significant intangible factors. In this paper a methodology is proposed that quantifies financial, strategic, and tactical attributes of each alternative. Attribute values are denned for each period of project life. Both project life and attributes are treated as random variables. Attributes are discounted to the current time and the multiple objectives are combined by composite programming. The distribution of the combined objective is estimated. The procedure is demonstrated on an actual case study.     

Bone SPECT of the jaws after fracture, onlay osteoplasty of insertion of implants

AIM: The aim of this study was early differentiation between uncomplicated and complicated processes of healing in the jaw using bone SPECT. METHODS: Investigations were performed in 40 mandibular fractures and 26 jaws after onlay osteoplasty as well as secondary insertion of implants. Bone SPECT was carried out within 1-2 months and after approximately 4-5 months. The uptake in the jaw was assessed semi-quantitatively using ROI analysis. RESULTS: Fractures with uncomplicated healing showed a decrease of uptake in follow-up, whereas fractures with an infection in the later course showed an increase, resulting in a significantly higher uptake at the follow-up investigation for the latter group. 1-2 months after onlay osteoplasty significantly lower uptake was found in regions with later occurrence of sequestration. In regions with implants in which osseointegration failed, there was significant reduction of uptake initially and significant elevation at the follow-up investigation. CONCLUSION: These results indicate a prognostic relevance of bone SPECT in the evaluation of processes of healing in the jaw.

Vapor-phase viscosity of phenol

New measurements of the vapor-phase viscosity of phenol were performed from 437 up to 624 K and for densities between 0.006 and 0.023 mol · L^–1 in an all-quartz oscillating-disk viscometer with small gaps. Thus, including our own measurements reported earlier, experimental data are available in the temperature range between 376 and 639 K and in the density range from 0.001 up to 0.023 mol · L^–1. The data were evaluated with a density series for the viscosity in which only a linear density contribution is included. The values of the second viscosity virial coefficient obtained for phenol as well as for benzene, toluene, and p-xylene were compared with results of the Rainwater-Friend theory and of the modified Enskog theory on the basis of the Lennard-Jones 12-6 potential. The agreement is reasonable, when the potential parameter ratios determined by Bich and Vogel are used. The influence of bound dimers seems to be already taken into account in the three-monomer contribution according to Hoffman and Curtiss.Paper dedicated to Professor Joseph Kestin.     

Boys and violence: A gender-informed analysis.

This article discusses the phenomenon of youth violence from a psychology of gender perspective. Although other factors are discussed--including gun availability, violence-related media influence, family and caretaker factors, and effects of teasing and bullying--the intention is to highlight new thinking on the potential relationship between boys' traditional masculine socialization experiences and violence. In this new perspective, traditional masculine socialization estranges and isolates many boys from their genuine inner lives and vital connections to others, which is theorized to heighten their risk of engaging in acts of violence. The authors identify school and community programs that may be helpful in counteracting damaging socialization experiences and supporting boys' healthier emotional and psychological development. Finally, the article discusses approaches that psychologists and other mental health professionals can use to help address this vital issue. Household energy consumption versus income and relative standard of living: A panel approach

Our fundamental premise is that energy consumption at the household level is a key indicator of standard of living. We employ state-of-the-art panel cointegration techniques to evaluate the nature of the relationship between income measures and energy consumption measures for seven East Indian Ocean countries. The general finding is that income and household electricity consumption are not cointegrated. Given this finding, we conclude that standard of living measures that rely on income measures and do not include household-level energy consumption information will necessarily miss important indications of both levels and changes of standard of living.
