Radiation signature of buried line radiators

A simple means of detecting the presence of a buried line radiator by its characteristic interference pattern above ground is proposed. The feasibility is demonstrated by measurements on a buried dipole oscillator at 1 GHz.     

Evolutionary Scheduling: A Review

Early and seminal work which applied evolutionary computing methods to scheduling problems from 1985 onwards laid a strong and exciting foundation for the work which has been reported over the past decade or so. A survey of the current state-of-the-art was produced in 1999 for the European Network of Excellence on Evolutionary Computing EVONET—this paper provides a more up-to-date overview of the area, reporting on current trends, achievements, and suggesting the way forward.     

The synthesis of14C- and3H-labeled glycerol ethers

The racemic¹⁴C-and³H-labeled alpha and beta derivatives of octadecyl glycerol ether (batyl alcohol) and of hexadecyl glycerol ether (chimyl alcohol) of high specific activity were synthesized by treating the appropriate alkyl halides with a large excess of the potassium salts of isopropylidene or benzylidene glycerol. By use of the trifluoroacetic anhydride esterification procedure, the labeled diesters of alpha and beta octadecyl and hexadecyl glycerol ethers were prepared. The labeled monoesters of beta octadecyl and of beta hexadecyl glycerol ethers were isolated from the reaction mixtures by silicic acid column chromatography. The lantibiotic lacticin 3147 produced in a milk-based medium improves the efficacy of a bismuth-based teat seal in cattle deliberately infected with Staphylococcus aureus

A preparation of the bacteriocin lacticin 3147 (prepared from a demineralized whey protein fermentation liquor) was combined as a powder with a bismuth-based intramammary teat seal and evaluated for its potential as an antimicrobial in non-lactating cows. The lacticin/teat seal formulation enabled significant bacteriocin release from the seal without the requirement for a surfactant. Studies in vivo in lactating cows demonstrated that this formulation was effective in reducing bacterial recoveries (approximately 20-fold) from teats deliberately inoculated with Staphylococcus aureus after infusion. Moreover, this formulation also significantly reduced the numbers of Staph. aureus recovered from teats that were exposed to the challenge bacterium before the infusion of the teat seal preparation. The powdered preparation of lacticin 3147 did, however, cause some teat irritation as evidenced by associated rises in somatic cell count (SCC). However, this effect was short-lived and when the mean SCC readings pre-infusion and the final two readings post-infusion were compared, there was no significant difference in the immunological acceptance between treatments.     

Shallow impurity states in semiconductors: Absorption cross-sections,excitation rates,and capture cross-sections

Shallow impurity state wave functions are derived for both a coulomb and δ-function binding potential within the effective mass formalism of Kohn. These wave functions, along with the Bloch functions of a perfect crystal are then used to obtain analytic expressions for photon spectral absorption cross-sections, thermal photon excitation rates, and carrier radiative capture cross-sections into the shallow centers.The calculated absorption cross-sections are in satisfactory agreement with both magnitude and spectral shape of experimentally measured cross-sections. The absorption cross-sections are such as to make the centers very sensitive to thermal photon excitation over a wide range of temperatures or center ionization energies. Finally, it is shown that radiative carrier trapping is normally negligible for shallow centers.     

Unitization of spontaneous nonverbal behavior in the study of emotion communication.

Videotapes of spontaneous facial and gestural reactions to affective slides were segmented by university student observers using a group adaptation of D. Newtson's (1976) unitization technique. In Exp I, 46 females and 35 males segmented the expressions of a variety of children and adults; in Exp II, 50 males segmented the expressions of high vs low-expressive male and female senders. Results demonstrate that the unitization technique applied to emotion expression yields reliable patterns of segmentation that may be used to investigate the relationships of communication accuracy to both the nature of the sender's behavior and the attentional patterns of the receiver. In particular, differences in segmentation results for males and females suggest that the technique may allow the detailed examination of process-level gender differences in nonverbal sending accuracy and receiving ability.
