Climatic changes influence the thermal and oxygen dynamics of a lake and thus its ecological functioning. The impacts of climatic changes on tropical lakes are so far poorly studied and the extent of the effects is therefore uncertain, most investigations describing only potential effects. In this study, we applied the one-dimensional lake ecosystem model GOTM-ERGOM to quantify the effects of climate change on thermal stratification, oxygen dynamics, and primary production in meso-oligotrophic Lake Volta. GOTM-ERGOM was calibrated and validated using two years of observed data. The validated model was used to evaluate a series of future climate change scenarios. The model simulations showed good agreement with observed water temperature, dissolved oxygen and chlorophyll-a and indicated intensified stratification and reduced oxygen levels in the productive water layers of the lake. However, the longer-lasting stratification (prolonged stability) did not translate into permanent stratification. A relatively small (1?m) upward shift of thermocline depth resulted in an 8%–12% volume loss of the oxygen-rich upper mixed layer, which may be significant for the fisheries of the lake as it diminishes the size of suitable fish habitats. Light limitation of primary production renders the lake somewhat resilient to intensive algae blooms, as traceable in both the present and in the future climate scenarios. In the long term, the ongoing climate change may affect riparian communities that depend on the lake's fisheries for their livelihood. In consequence, future lake management strategies for implementation need to account for the impacts of future climate change. 相似文献

A mass balance model of trophic interactions among ten key functional producer and consumer groups in Lake Volta was constructed using the Ecopath model to study the energy flows and species interactions in the lake. The present study was based on secondary and primary data on fish catch, diet composition, phytoplankton and zooplankton biomasses, collected in 2015 and 2016. Additional information on growth parameters of major species required for balancing the Ecopath model was obtained from sampling and FishBase. The functional groups were detritus, phytoplankton, zooplankton, benthos, prey fish, Tilapia, Bagrus, Chrysichthys, Alestes and Synodontis species. Four trophic levels were identified in the Lake Volta ecosystem, with the energy flow occurring mainly within the first three trophic levels. The calculated ecotrophic efficiency value of the primary producers (phytoplankton: 0.17; detritus: 0.22) indicated they were least exploited, compared to the secondary producers, zooplankton (0.80) and benthos (0.50). All secondary consumers had ecotrophic efficiency values higher than the primary producers, indicating they are exploited in the ecosystem. The main energy flows in the lake were from phytoplankton and detritus at trophic level I, and Bagrus species, the top predator, at a level of 3.30. The network analysis, illustrating a connectance index of 0.43 and an omnivory index of 0.06, in the lake system indicated the ecosystem is unstable, somewhat immature and still in a developing stage. 相似文献

The oregano spice includes various plant species. The most common are the genus Origanum, native of Europe, and the Lippia, native of Mexico. Among the species of Origanum. their most important components are the limonene, gamma-cariofilene, rho-cymenene, canfor, linalol, alpha-pinene, carvacrol and thymol. In the genus Lippia, the same compounds can be found. The oregano composition depends on the specie, climate, altitude, time of recollection and the stage of growth. Some of the properties of this plant's extracts are being currently studied due to the growing interest for substituting synthetic additives commonly found in foods. Oregano has a good antioxidant capacity and also presents antimicrobial activity against pathogenic microorganisms like Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, among others. These are all characteristics of interest for the food industry because they may enhance the safety and stability of foods. There are also some reports regarding the antimutagenic and anticarcinogenic effect of oregano; representing an alternative for the potential treatment and/or prevention of certain chronic ailments, like cancer. 相似文献

Some chemical and nutritional characteristics of the rubber seed Hevea brasiliensis were studied. The protein content, its amino acid composition as well as the iron, calcium, phosphorus and cyanide (free and bound) concentrations, were determined in the dehulled seed. The effect of soaking, cooking, soaking-cooking and cooking-fat extraction procedure of the seed on the cyanide content and its in vivo protein utilization, was also evaluated. The protein quality was biologically assessed using the protein efficiency ratio (PER). The protein content of the seed was 18%, and the most limiting amino acid was threonine, with a chemical score of 71.6. The iron, calcium and phosphorus contents were 6.2, 109 and 429 mg/100 g, respectively. Its fat content was 48% with a total energy value of 702 kcal/100 g (2,948 Kj/100 g). The total cyanide content in the fresh seed was 130-230 mg/100 g; 6% was in the free form and 94% as bound cyanide. The most effective treatment for reducing the cyanide content was found to be 20 hours of soaking in water, combined with one hour of cooking. The raw seed had a low nutritive value and produced weight loss and death when fed to rats. The protein value, however, improved upon the seed treatment, reaching PER values close to those found in traditional cereals such as corn. It is therefore concluded that the seed of Hevea brasiliensis is a good source of energy, calcium, valine, isoleucine, phenylalanine and tyrosine. In contrast, it is a poor source of threonine, leucine and lysine. Its cyanide content is high, but when removed by treatment, such as soaking in water, cooking or fat extraction, the protein utilization can be improved. 相似文献

Bio-/environment-friendly cationic gemini surfactant, ethane-1,2-diyl bis(N,N-dimethyl-N-hexadecylammoniumacetoxy)dichloride, referred to as 16-E2-16, was synthesized and characterized. Corrosion inhibition effects of 16-E2-16 on mild steel (MS) surface in 1 M HCl solution at 30, 40, 50 and 60 °C were evaluated using gravimetric analysis, potentiodynamic polarisation and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. The nature of the protective inhibitor film formed on the MS surface was analysed by SEM, EDAX and FT-IR, while TGA was used to assure the thermal behaviour and stability of the film at high temperature. The formation of [inhibitor-Fe2+] on the surface of MS was confirmed by UV–visible spectroscopy. The inhibition efficiency of the studied inhibitor increased with increasing concentration and solution temperature. The compound behaved as a mixed type inhibitor and acted by blocking the electrode surface by means of adsorption obeying the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Surface active properties and corrosion inhibition effects of 16-E2-16 in the presence of inorganic (NaI) and organic (NaSal) salts were also investigated and are discussed. Stochastic electromagnetic fields characterized by optimized fringe visibility in a Young interferometric arrangement are shown to be those whose random character is position independent. The optimization procedure involves local unitary transformations, which can be implemented by using reversible anisotropic polarization devices placed at the two pinholes. This paper demonstrates the design and analysis of automatic generation control using intelligent genetic algorithm tuned fuzzy based controller. A two area thermal power system simulated for four different scenarios considers a reheat steam turbine in each area with Generator rate constraints. The Integral Time Squared Error (ITSE) employed to get an objective function for the optimization of controller gains. The simulation results compared with the conventional Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller, Genetic Algorithm (GA) tuned PID controller and GA tuned Fuzzy PID controller. The proposed GA tuned Fuzzy based PID Controller can generate the best performance for peak overshoot, undershoot and settling time with step load disturbances. Stinking toe (Hymenaea courbaril), also called Jatoba and Kerosene tree, is a medicinal plant commonly found in the central and South American countries. In the Caribbean, Mexico and Brazil, the powdery sweet dust of its fruit is consumed for energy. The chemical examination of the yellowish sweet powder of the fruit yielded sucrose and linolenic acid as major compounds. The pods yielded the labdane diterpenoids crotomachlin (1), labd-13E-en-8-ol-15-oic acid (2), labdanolic acid (4), (13E)-labda 7, 13 dien-15-oic acid (5) and labd-8 (17), 13E- dien-15-oic acid (6), along with the sesquiterpene, spathulenol (7), as confirmed by 1H and 13C NMR spectral studies. The methyl ester of labd-13E-en-8-ol-15-oic acid (3) was also characterized during the purification of compound 5. The total amount of these terpenoids in the fruit was about 0.1% (w/w) of the dried fruit. Compounds 1–5 and 7 were assayed for anti-inflammatory activity using cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and -2 (COX-2) enzymes. At 100 ppm, compounds 3 and 4 showed selective COX-2 enzyme inhibition. Also, compounds 1, 2 and 5 inhibited lipid peroxidation by 46%, 48% and 75%, respectively, at 100 ppm. These compounds were isolated from this fruit and their COX and lipid peroxidation inhibitory activities are reported for the first time in this paper. 相似文献

Several North American species of Pogonomyrmex harvester ants exhibit group foraging, whereas South American species are exclusively solitary foragers. The composition
of the secretions of the poison and Dufour glands in the South American species, Pogonomyrmex vermiculatus, were analyzed, and the secretions and their components were tested as trail pheromones in laboratory bioassays. The major
compounds in the poison gland were the alkylpyrazines, 2,5-dimethylpyrazine, 2,3,5-trimethylpyrazine, and 3-ethyl-2,5-dimethylpyrazine.
The Dufour gland contained five alkanes, from tridecane to heptadecane, with pentadecane being most abundant. In behavioral
bioassays, poison gland extracts and the mixture of pyrazines produced a trail pheromone effect, whereas the Dufour gland
extracts and the alkanes had no effect on ant locomotion. We conclude that group foraging in P. vermiculatus does not arise from the inability to produce or detect possible pheromones, but rather, from physiological and/or ecological
