Even with new technologies emerging daily that reduce the barriers to identify and purchase products, the average consumer still reports having less time to devote to shopping. A study conducted at Clemson University, sponsored by a reusable packaging company, Rehrig Pacific Company, investigated if a unique shipping shell/crate design with on‐message and product branding (direct colour print onto the shell) increased brand awareness, attention and purchase intent when placed directly onto the retail shelf. Reusable packaging for 2 L bottles of carbonated soft drink packaged in proprietary reusable shells with a multicolour logo of the major US beverage company was chosen for the study. The branded proprietary reusable shell was evaluated against a standard reusable shell in the industry used by the same company. Testing was conducted using state‐of‐the‐art eye tracking hardware and CUshop?, a full immersion consumer retail experience laboratory. Data captured from 89 study participants indicated a strong preference for the new branded reusable shell. Statistical analysis demonstrated a 47% increase in eye fixations on the branded display and an increase in fixation duration, a measure of how long consumers looked at the display, of 34% (p  < 0.05). More significantly, an increase in the visual saliency of the primary package, the 2 L bottle, was illustrated by an increase in fixation duration of 46% (p  < 0.05) and an increase of the number of fixations of 54% (p  < 0.01) when displayed in the branded reusable shell. Thus, results indicate that in‐store marketing incorporating a unique secondary packaging may lift brand awareness and increase purchase intent. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Activation of the P2X7 receptor results in the opening of a large pore that plays a role in immune responses, apoptosis, and many other physiological and pathological processes. Here, we investigated the role of conserved and unique residues in the extracellular vestibule connecting the agonist-binding domain with the transmembrane domain of rat P2X7 receptor. We found that all residues that are conserved among the P2X receptor subtypes respond to alanine mutagenesis with an inhibition (Y51, Q52, and G323) or a significant decrease (K49, G326, K327, and F328) of 2′,3′-O-(benzoyl-4-benzoyl)-ATP (BzATP)-induced current and permeability to ethidium bromide, while the nonconserved residue (F322), which is also present in P2X4 receptor, responds with a 10-fold higher sensitivity to BzATP, much slower deactivation kinetics, and a higher propensity to form the large dye-permeable pore. We examined the membrane expression of conserved mutants and found that Y51, Q52, G323, and F328 play a role in the trafficking of the receptor to the plasma membrane, while K49 controls receptor responsiveness to agonists. Finally, we studied the importance of the physicochemical properties of these residues and observed that the K49R, F322Y, F322W, and F322L mutants significantly reversed the receptor function, indicating that positively charged and large hydrophobic residues are important at positions 49 and 322, respectively. These results show that clusters of conserved residues above the transmembrane domain 1 (K49–Y51–Q52) and transmembrane domain 2 (G326–K327–F328) are important for receptor structure, membrane expression, and channel gating and that the nonconserved residue (F322) at the top of the extracellular vestibule is involved in hydrophobic inter-subunit interaction which stabilizes the closed state of the P2X7 receptor channel.  相似文献

While innovations in metal forming technology are closely linked to material science, automation, and mechatronization in recent decades, nowadays, and in the upcoming years, they are supposed to be driven by digital transformation and virtualization. Motivated by this expectation and the fact that the dynamic, process-relevant thermophysical state variables in plates during rolling are difficult or even impossible to measure, a modularly structured 2D/3D model, integrated into a digital shadow, is built and validated against a metrologically accessible process data. The decisive innovation of the presented modeling strategy is the investigation of the state during longitudinal rolling in the fillet, depending on the width direction. The fillet marks the heavy plate without head and tail crops, developed during longitudinal rolling. Application of the simulation tool reveals significant temperature gradients near the plate surfaces, both horizontally and vertically, but also a region of nearly constant temperature near the core. The development of the fillet cross-section shape, including the emergence of bulges or contractions at the side surfaces, is predicted within the simulation. The digital shadow is scalable and has a parameterized structure so that rolling schedules of different compositions can be simulated.  相似文献

Extracting plasmon‐induced hot carriers over a metal–semiconductor Schottky barrier enables photodetection below the semiconductor bandgap energy. However, interfacial carrier recombination hinders the efficiency and stability of this process, severely limiting its implementation in telecommunication. This study proposes and demonstrates the use of epitaxially grown lattice‐matched SrTiO3 for interfacial passivation of silicon‐based plasmonic Schottky devices. The devices are activated by an electrical soft‐breakdown of the interfacial SrTiO3 layer, resulting in reproducible rectified Schottky characteristics. The transition to a low resistance state of the SrTiO3 layer boosts the extraction efficiency of hot holes upon resonant plasmonic excitation, giving rise to a two orders of magnitude higher photocurrent compared to devices with a native oxide layer. Photoresponse, tunability, and barrier height studies under reverse biases as high as 100 V present superior stability with the incorporation of the SrTiO3 layer. The investigation paves the way toward plasmon‐induced photodetection for practical applications including those under challenging operating conditions.  相似文献

Image alignment refers to finding the best transformation from a fixed reference image to a new image of a scene. This process is often optimizing a similarity measure between images, computed based on the image data. However, in time-critical applications state-of-the-art methods for computing similarity are too slow. Instead of using all the image data to compute similarity, one could use only a subset of pixels to improve the speed, but often this comes at the cost of reduced accuracy. These kinds of tradeoffs between the amount of computation and the accuracy of the result have been addressed in the field of real-time artificial intelligence as deliberation control problems. We propose that the optimization of a similarity measure is a natural application domain for deliberation control using the anytime algorithm framework. In this paper, we present anytime versions for the computation of two common image similarity measures: mean squared difference and mutual information. Off-line, we learn a performance profile specific to each measure, which is then used on-line to select the appropriate amount of pixels to process at each optimization step. When tested against existing techniques, our method achieves comparable quality and robustness with significantly less computation.  相似文献

Psychologists in seven states were surveyed regarding their management of confidentiality in general and in specific situations that challenge confidentiality. The 188 respondents indicated a high regard for the confidentiality of the psychotherapy relationship and a reluctance to disclose information without the client's consent. In response to only two situations, consulting a colleague and dealing with a potentially dangerous client, were psychologists willing to consider disclosure of information without consent. There was considerable variability in how respondents inform their clients about confidentiality, with half either alluding to or mentioning specific limits of confidentiality from the outset of the psychotherapy relationship and the other half either saying nothing at all or indicating that everything is confidential. Previous experience with breaches of confidentiality appeared to influence psychologists' general approach to informing about confidentiality. In a situation relating to potential dangerousness, theoretical orientation and potential target of harm emerged as important factors in determining information given about confidentiality. Recent concerns have been raised that plants such as ragwort (Senecio jacobaea), yew (Taxus baccata) and rhododendron (Rhododendron ponticum) that are toxic to livestock may be included in compost windrows but may not be fully detoxified by the composting process. This study investigates the decomposition during composting of toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids present in ragwort, taxines (A and B) present in yew, and grayanotoxins (GTX I, II, and III) present in rhododendron during composting. Plant samples were contained within microporous bags either towards the edge or within the centre of a pilot-scale compost heap. They were destructively harvested at regular intervals over 1200 °C cumulative temperature (about three months). Samples were analysed for levels of toxins by liquid chromatography time of flight mass spectrometry (LC-TOF-MS). Pyrrolizidine alkaloids and taxines were shown to degrade completely during the composting process. While GTX I showed significant reductions, concentrations of GTX III remained unchanged after 1200 °C cumulative temperature. However, estimates of exposure to grazing livestock coming into contact with source-segregated green waste compost containing up to 7% rhododendron suggest that GTX III poses no appreciable risk.  相似文献

We implemented the IWA River Water Quality Model No. 1 (Reichert et al., 2001. River Water Quality Model No. 1, IWA Scientific & Technical Report No. 12) to simulate water-quality characteristics in two pilot-scale High Rate Algal Ponds. Simulation results were compared with two years' of data from the ponds. The first year's data from one pond were used for model calibration; the remaining data were used for validation. As originally formulated and parameterized, the model consistently yielded summer-time algal biomass concentrations which were too low - with consequent failures in its reproduction of dissolved oxygen, pH and nutrient dynamics. We experimented with various structural/parametric changes to improve the model's performance. The most effective strategy was to greatly increase the respiratory losses suffered by the heterotrophic osmotrophs (thereby giving the algae access to a larger fraction of the incoming dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen). This suggests that CO2-bubbling alone cannot entirely preclude resource-limitation of algal production. We doubt that our parameterization of heterotrophic osmotrophs is correct and infer that the algae derive a large fraction of their nutrition by direct osmotrophic uptake of dissolved organic matter. This inference is supported by the literature concerning the physiology of the dominant algal species in our ponds.  相似文献

An in situ technique for preparing composite nanoparticles from hydrophobic cellulose acetate and hydrophilic polysaccharides using nanoprecipitation is presented. This technique allows the nanoparticles’ surface properties to be tuned very specifically. Spherical, narrow‐size‐distributed composite nanoparticles of different size, charge, functionality, and increased stability can be generated by using hydroxyethyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, low molecular weight chitosan, and amino cellulose. The influence of the pH and hydrophilic polysaccharide content in the particle formation is shown. The pH‐ and ionic strength‐ effective zeta‐potential functions are evidence of the presence of functional polysaccharides at the nanoparticle surface. The in situ technique is compared with the adsorption of hydrophilic polysaccharides onto cellulose acetate nanoparticles in two steps. The great potential of in situ prepared composite nanoparticles in the pharmaceutical industry and bio‐ or food technology, as carriers of hydrophobic substances in aqueous media and for specific surface modifications, e.g., to selectively introduce strong antimicrobial properties, is illustrated.  相似文献
