Implementation of computerized social work data base/assessments

The Department of Veterans Affairs, Social Work Service has designed, developed and implemented the Social Work Information Management System (SWIMS) which provides for the collection and reporting of both administrative and clinical information. This paper describes the implementation of one component of SWIMS, the automated Social Work Data Base/Assessment. The discussion details the implementation process and discusses issues encountered in the implementation of a computerized documentation system.

Heat transfer of highly consistent shear-thinning fluids flowing in a horizontal cylindrical channel has been investigated numerically and experimentally when the outer channel wall is subjected to a constant convective heat exchange. The case considered being cooling, a possible ice deposit must be taken into account. The variation of the rheological properties with temperature must be considered as well.     

Differential induction of metallothionein synthesis by interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha in rat tissues

Metallothionein (MT) synthesis induced by the inflammatory cytokines, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF), was studied in vivo. Administration of recombinant human IL-6 or TNF to rats caused the acute phase responses including rapid decreases in plasma zinc (Zn), and increases in plasma copper (Cu) and ceruloplasmin. Hepatic concentration of MT-I, one of MT isoforms, began to increase within 3 h after the injection of IL-6 or TNF. In IL-6-treated rats, MT-I concentration in liver reached a maximum level at 12 h and decreased with a transient rebound, whereas, in TNF-treated rats, a high level of MT-I lasted for about 48 h. MT-II, the other MT isoform, was induced more than MT-I in liver by both cytokines. MT-I was also induced in lung and heart by TNF, but little by IL-6. The data suggest that IL-6 may be responsible for MT synthesis in liver, whereas TNF may be responsible not only in liver but also in lung and heart. Furthermore plasma concentration of MT did not always reflect the enhanced concentration of MT by TNF and IL-6 in liver, suggesting involvement of many factors influencing plasma MT levels. The interrelation between IL-6 and TNF for MT synthesis has also been discussed.

A low threshold current density of ~100 A/cm² has been obtained at 1.55 μm using a graded-index separate-confinement-heterostructure strained InGaAsP single-quantum-well laser. The design of the laser structure is based on results calculated from the viewpoint of effective carrier injection into the well     

A measurement-theoretic analysis of the fuzzy logic model of perception.

The fuzzy logic model of perception (FLMP) is analyzed from a measurement-theoretic perspective. FLMP has an impressive history of fitting factorial data, suggesting that its probabilistic form is valid. The authors raise questions about the underlying processing assumptions of FLMP. Although FLMP parameters are interpreted as fuzzy logic truth values, the authors demonstrate that for several factorial designs widely used in choice experiments, most desirable fuzzy truth value properties fail to hold under permissible rescalings, suggesting that the fuzzy logic interpretation may be unwarranted. The authors show that FLMP's choice rule is equivalent to a version of G. Rasch's (1960) item response theory model, and the nature of FLMP measurement scales is transparent when stated in this form. Statistical inference theory exists for the Rasch model and its equivalent forms. In fact, FLMP can be reparameterized as a simple 2-category logit model, thereby facilitating interpretation of its measurement scales and allowing access to commercially available software for performing statistical inference. Task-relevant late positive component in rats: is it related to hippocampal theta rhythm?

In the last 2 years (1994-95), two symposium volumes and three reviews have been published that were fully devoted to peptide antibiotics (antibacterial peptides or antimicrobial peptides). Since the field has been growing rapidly, this review is largely a follow-up of new results published in the last 2 years. Sequencing of the 16S RNA of the small ribosomal subunit indicate that the microbial world is much larger than generally appreciated. The importance of the natural flora is stressed and its effect on the evolution of peptide antibiotics and immunity in general is discussed.
