EGLE is a wide frequency band search- coil magnetometer designed and built at the Roma Tre University. It has been installed onboard the ISS by the Italian astronaut Roberto Vittori on April 25, 2005 within the LAZIO- EGLE experiment carried out during the ENEIDE Soyuz mission. The scope of the experiment is to test EGLE in space and to investigate geomagnetic field variations. The main applications of EGLE are the study of electromagnetic environment inside the ISS, the correlation of magnetic field data with particle fluxes detected by LAZIO particle detector, and the monitoring of ionospheric perturbations possibly caused by Earth seismic activity. Since continuous electromagnetic field measurements on board the ISS are important for diverse space applications, a magnetometer with a suitable design is requested. Appropriate solutions for these applications, which have been adopted by EGLE, are in particular the use of 1- Wire technology and the possibility to detect by means of a search- coil magnetometer a large portion of the ULF frequency band, usually measured by flux- gate probes. To investigate the topside ionosphere electromagnetic environment and stability of Van Allen radiation belts in relation with seismic and anthropogenic electromagnetic emissions, a specific satellite mission (the ESPERIA project) has been designed for the Italian Space Agency (ASI), and up to now a few instruments of its payload have been built and tested in space. One of them is exactly the EGLE search- coil magnetometer. The first magnetic observations performed by this instrument reveal to be promising and demand for a further and deeper analysis based on a longer time series of data.  相似文献

One of the pitfalls in current methods of acceleration analysis of planar mechanisms is the difficulty in identifying the different types of acceleration components such as the “sliding” acceleration and the Coriolis contribution. Furthermore, the latter is often missed by the analyst altogether which then leads to completely false results in dynamic analysis. Even distinguished authors have on the record actual numerical examples where the wrong angular velocity was used in computing the Coriolis component. The present article demonstrates the acceleration analysis of planar mechanisms using complex-number algebra. This technique, when programmed for digital computation using complex-arithmetic, or using hand calculation, provides the magnitude and direction of all the acceleration components, including the Coriolis term, automatically without resort to such crutches as a “rule of thumb” for determining whether or not the latter is present, “traditional sign conventions”, and without the risk of using the wrong angular velocity. The procedure, derived here, is illustrated by examples.  相似文献

Surface-based labeling of cortical anatomy using a deformable atlas   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
The authors describe a computerized method to automatically find and label the cortical surface in three-dimensional (3-D) magnetic resonance (MR) brain images. The approach the authors take is to model a prelabeled brain atlas as a physical object and give it elastic properties, allowing it to warp itself onto regions in a preprocessed image. Preprocessing consists of boundary-finding and a morphological procedure which automatically extracts the brain and sulci from an MR image and provides a smoothed representation of the brain surface to which the deformable model can rapidly converge. The authors' deformable models are energy-minimizing elastic surfaces that can accurately locate image features. The models are parameterized with 3-D bicubic B-spline surfaces. The authors design the energy function such that cortical fissure (sulci) points on the model are attracted to fissure points on the image and the remaining model points are attracted to the brain surface. A conjugate gradient method minimizes the energy function, allowing the model to automatically converge to the smoothed brain surface. While little is known about their activation requirements and function, the intraepithelial T cells of the murine vagina express TCR complexes in which the antigen recognition components and the signaling components have unusual features. These vaginal T cells express an invariant V gamma 4/V delta 1 TCR and appear to be the only intraepithelial gamma delta T cells that exclusively use FcR gamma chains in their TCR complex. To further characterize the vaginal gamma delta T cells we isolated them from normal mice and from mice injected systemically with an activation-inducing dose of anti-TCR mAb. The isolated gamma delta T cells were examined by flow cytometry for their surface expression of a panel of adhesion, proteins, activation antigens and cellular interaction molecules (CD44, CD62L, CD45RB, LFA-1, CD2 and CD28). The patterns of expression observed indicate that the vaginal gamma delta T cells of normal mice show the phenotype of effector T cells. The adhesion/co-stimulatory molecules CD28 and CD2 were not detected on vaginal gamma delta T cells, an interesting finding since the absence of CD2 from other T cells has been suggested to result in anergy. However, vaginal gamma delta T cells are responsive to TCR-mediated signals since injection of normal mice with pan-anti-TCR antibody or stimulating anti-gamma delta TCR antibody resulted in an increase in cell number and increased expression of transferrin and IL-2 receptors. These results indicate that vaginal gamma delta T cells might utilize other co-stimulatory molecules, if any, in connection with TCR-induced activation and differentiation. While the physiological function of vaginal gamma delta T cells remains unknown, the expression of an invariant V gamma 4/V delta 1 TCR, their exclusive use of gamma chain homodimers in their TCR, and the absence of CD2 and CD28 co-stimulatory molecules are a novel combination of properties that suggests specialized functional properties. Although vaginal gamma delta T cells share some features in common with gamma delta T cells that reside in other epithelial tissues, such as skin and intestine, the present studies provide additional evidence that vaginal gamma delta T cells are a highly specialized and distinct T cell population.  相似文献

Circulating asymmetrical dimethylarginine (ADMA), an endogenous inhibitor of nitric oxide synthesis, has been proposed as a biomarker for clinical outcome. Dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase (DDAH) is the main enzyme responsible for ADMA metabolism and elimination. Adipose tissue ADMA concentrations and DDAH activity and their role in diabetes and obesity have not yet been investigated. In this study, we evaluated clinical microdialysis in combination with a sensitive analytical method (GC-MS/MS) to measure ADMA concentrations in extracellular fluid. Adipose tissue ADMA concentrations were assessed before and during an oral glucose tolerance test in lean healthy subjects and subjects with diabetes (n = 4 each), and in morbidly obese subjects before and after weight loss of 30 kg (n = 7). DDAH activity was determined in subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue obtained during laparoscopic surgery (n = 5 paired samples). Mean interstitial ADMA concentrations did not differ between study populations (healthy 0.17 ± 0.03 μM; diabetic 0.21 ± 0.03 μM; morbidly obese 0.16 ± 0.01 and 0.17 ± 0.01 μM before and after weight loss, respectively). We did not observe any response of interstitial ADMA concentrations to the oral glucose challenge. Adipose tissue DDAH activity was negligible compared to liver tissue. Thus, adipose tissue ADMA plays a minor role in NO-dependent regulation of adipose tissue blood flow and metabolism.  相似文献

Does visually perceived distance differ when objects are viewed in augmented reality (AR), as opposed to the real world? What are the differences? These questions are theoretically interesting, and the answers are important for the development of many tablet- and phone-based AR applications, including mobile AR navigation systems. This article presents a thorough literature review of distance judgment experimental protocols, and results from several areas of perceptual psychology. In addition to distance judgments of real and virtual objects, this section also discusses previous work in measuring the geometry of virtual picture space and considers how this work might be relevant to tablet AR. Then, the article presents the results of two experiments. In each experiment, observers bisected egocentric distances of 15 and 30 m in tablet-based AR and in the real world, in both indoor corridor and outdoor field environments. In AR, observers bisected the distances to virtual humans, while in the real world, they bisected the distances to real humans. This is the first reported research that directly compares distance judgments of real and virtual objects in a tablet AR system. Four key findings were: (1) In AR, observers expanded midpoint intervals at 15 m, but compressed midpoints at 30 m. (2) Observers were accurate in the real world. (3) The environmental setting—corridor or open field—had no effect. (4) The picture perception literature is important in understanding how distances are likely judged in tablet-based AR. Taken together, these findings suggest the depth distortions that AR application developers should expect with mobile and especially tablet-based AR.  相似文献

Hydrophobicity values for amino acids obtained from proteinunfolding experiments are about twice as large as those obtainedfrom data on the partitioning of amino acids between water andoctanol. Quantitative analyses of several data sets, presentedhere, indicate that the difference is best explained by themost direct hypothesis, i.e. that the environment of hydrophobicgroups in the interior of a protein is poorly modeled by octanol.Instead, we propose—and provide supporting evidence—thathydrocarbons are a more suitable model. First, we reanalyzedata from both solute partitioning and protein unfolding experiments,taking account of the effects that were omitted previously,by introducing a volume dependence in the former and a fullfree energy analysis in the latter. Both changes in evaluationmethodology decrease the discrepancy, but the differences remainsubstantial. The hydrophobicity parameter obtained from side–chaintransfers between octanol and water increases from 16.7 to 22cal/ mol/2, while that obtained from protein unfolding decreasesfrom 34.9 to 31.2 cal/mol/2. On the other hand,our analysisof the solubilities of pure hydrocarbons in water provides ahydrophobicity parameter of 30.8 cal/mol/2. This apparent hydrocarbon–likeenvironment of a protein's interior is also suggested more directlyby an analysis of the contact environment of hydrophobic sidechains in mutation/unfolding experiments, which have polar contactareas that are  相似文献
