In premetered slot or extrusion coating and related sheet coating a “bead” of liquid is held between the coating die and the moving sheet by capillary forces, which depend on gap clearances, surface tension, contact line attachment, and dynamic contact angle; by viscous forces, which depend on clearances, viscosity, meniscus, location, and coating thickness; and by the externally applied pressure difference, which must fall within bounds for the bead to be operable.New bounds are derived for quasi-static beads with variable meniscus location, extending Ruschak's [1] analysis. Viscous effects are modeled by Couette and Poiseuille contributions that account for nonuniform clearances and are important except in limiting cases like Ruschak's. Polyunsaturated fatty acids are normally hydrogenated by microorganisms in the rumen. Because of this hydrogenation ruminant triglycerides contain very low proportions of polyunsaturated fatty acids. A new process is described whereby polyunsaturated oil droplets are protected from ruminal hydrogenation by encapsulation with formaldehyde-treated protein. The formaldehyde-treated protein resists breakdown in the rumen thereby protecting the fatty acids against microbial hydrogenation. When these protected oils are fed to ruminants the formaldehydeprotein complex is hydrolyzed in the acidic conditions of the abomasum and the fatty acids are absorbed from the small intestine. This results in substantial changes in the triglycerides of plasma, milk and depot fats, in which the proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids is increased from 2–5% to 20–30%. These effects are observed in the plasma and milk within 24–48 hr of feeding while a longer period is necessary to alter the composition of sheep depot fat. The implications of these findings are discussed in relation to human and ruminant nutrition.  相似文献

The distribution of sand and nickel particles with height in a horizontal channel of rectangular cross section has been measured and eddy diffusivities have been computed from these measurements. Turbulent suspension of particles appeared to occur where the concentration of solid particles was low, the particle diameter was small (< 0.2 mm.) and the ratio of the settling velocity of the particles to the friction velocity of the flow was less than 0.2. Where these criteria were not satisfied, concentration profiles were observed to deviate significantly from the shape associated with turbulent suspension. These deviations are attributed to the effect of particle interactions investigated by Bagnold.  相似文献

Abstract: An experimental test series was carried out to determine input parameters for a well‐known continuum damage mechanics elementary ply plasticity model. A full suite of data was obtained for a carbon fibre and an S2‐glass fibre‐reinforced composite material, both currently used in the aerospace industry. Models were implemented using the experimentally determined input parameters and predictions for in‐plane behaviour found good agreement with experiments for both material systems. In addition, model predictions for cyclic loading accurately captured reload moduli and plastic strain magnitude.  相似文献

Although contaminant removal from water using zero-valent iron nanoparticles (INP) has been investigated for a wide array of chemical pollutants, the majority of studies to date have only examined the reaction of INP in simple single-contaminant systems. Such systems fail to reproduce the complexity of environmental waters and consequently fail as environmental analogues due to numerous competitive reactions not being considered. Consequently there is a high demand for multi-elemental and site-specific studies to advance the design of INP treatment infrastructure. Here INP are investigated using batch reactor systems over a range of pH for the treatment of water containing multi-element contaminants specifically U, Cu, Cr and Mo, selected to provide site-specific analogues for leachants collected from the Li?ava mine, near Oravi?a in South West Romania. Concurrently, a U-only solution was also analysed as a single-system for comparison.  相似文献

Hypophosphatemia is observed in patients undergoing nocturnal hemodialysis. Phosphate is commonly added to the dialysate acid bath, but systematic evaluation of the safety and reliability of this strategy is lacking. The objectives of this study were 4‐fold. First, we determined whether predictable final dialysate phosphate concentrations could be achieved by adding varying amounts of Fleet® enema. Second, we assessed the stability of calcium (Ca) and phosphate dialysate levels under simulated nocturnal hemodialysis conditions. Third, we assessed for Ca‐phosphate precipitate. Finally, we evaluated whether dialysate containing Fleet® enema met the current sterility standards. We added serial aliquots of enema to 4.5 L of dialysate acid concentrate and proportioned the solution on Gambro and Althin/Baxter dialysis machines for up to 8 hours. We measured dialysate phosphate, Ca, pH, and bicarbonate concentrations at baseline, and after simulated dialysis at 4 and 8 hours. We evaluated for precipitation visually and by assessing optical density at 620 nm. We used inoculation of agar to detect bacteria and Pyrotell reaction for endotoxin. For every 30 mL of Fleet® (1.38 mmol/mL of phosphate) enema added, the dialysate phosphate concentration increased by 0.2 mmol/L. There were no significant changes in dialysate phosphate, Ca, pH, and bicarbonate concentrations over 8 hours. No precipitate was observed in the dialysate by optical density measures at 620 nm for additions of up to 90 mL of enema. Bacterial and endotoxin testing met sterility standards. The addition of Fleet® enema to dialysate increases phosphate concentration in a predictable manner, and no safety problems were observed in our in vitro studies.  相似文献

Transendothelial electronic resistance (TEER) measurements are performed across a cell layer immobilized on a microfluidic device that also enables the cell layer to interact with a flowing stream of red blood cells (RBCs). A bipolar pulsed square wave potential is applied across a monolayer of bovine pulmonary artery endothelial cells, and the resulting current response is measured and integrated. The overall impedance of the cell layer provides an indicator of cell layer integrity. After cell seeding on the device, a decrease in TEER signal from 22.3 ± 1.6 μC to 3.5 ± 0.4 μC (corresponding to a resistance of 40.9 ± 2.9 Ω·cm(2) to 259.1 ± 27.4 Ω·cm(2)) was observed after 8 h of cell growth. Intracellular nitric oxide (NO) production by the immobilized endothelial cells that had reached confluence was 34% higher than those cells that had not reached confluence, as indicated by the integrated TEER system. Importantly, this NO production by the confluent endothelium was stimulated by ATP released from RBCs flowing under the endothelial cells. In this construct, the described microfluidic device enables both a TEER-based evaluation of cell layer integrity and molecularly communicated interactions of these cells with a flowing stream of blood components.  相似文献

Synchrotron infrared radiation has been successfully coupled through an infrared (IR) microscope to a thin-cavity external reflectance cell to study the diffusion controlled redox of a ferrocyanide solution. Excellent signal-to-noise ratios were achieved even at aperture settings close to the diffraction limit. Comparisons of noise levels as a function of aperture size demonstrate that this can be attributed to the high brilliance of synchrotron radiation relative to a conventional thermal source. Time resolved spectroscopic studies of diffusion controlled redox behavior have been measured and compared to purely electrochemical responses of the thin-cavity cell. Marked differences between the two measurements have been explained by analyzing diffusion in both the axial (linear) and radial dimensions. Whereas both terms contribute to the measured current and charge, only species that originate in the volume element above the electrode and diffuse in the direction perpendicular to the electrode surface are interrogated by IR radiation. Implications for the use of ultramicroelectrodes and synchrotron IR (SIR) to study electrochemical processes in the submillisecond time domain are discussed.  相似文献

A capillary electrophoresis mass spectrometry (CE-MS) interface utilizing a flow-through microvial is used to ensure the electric continuity and supply the catholyte and mobilizer solutions during the capillary isoelectric focusing (cIEF) and mobilization process. The flow-through microvial provides a stable chemical environment and helps to improve the ionization efficiency without significantly diluting the analyte. The CE-MS interface facilitates the transfer of the mobilized cIEF effluent to the site of electrospray ionization, and the gaseous ions can be detected directly by a mass spectrometer. It also allows for complete focusing and mobilization processes to be performed automatically in programmed sequences with commercial CE systems. Two different strategies, using either a part of the capillary or the flow-through microvial of the CE-MS interface as the catholyte reservoir for bare fused silica capillaries or neutral coated capillaries, respectively, were developed for automated cIEF-electrospray ionization (ESI)-MS. Reasonable separation efficiency was achieved using proper concentration of carrier ampholytes and suitable strategies of electroosmotic/electrophoretic mobilization.  相似文献

We report a new core-shell microcapsule system for the visual detection of mechanical damage. The core material, 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene, is a conjugated cyclic olefin and a precursor to intensely colored polyacetylene. A combination of poly(urea-formaldehyde) and polyurethane is required to effectively encapsulate the volatile core material. Increasing the outer shell wall thickness and including a core-side prepolymer improves the thermal stability and free-flowing nature of these capsules, which tend to leach and rupture with thinner shell walls. Capsules ruptured in the presence of the Grubbs-Love ruthenium catalyst show immediate color change from nearly colorless to red-orange and dark purple over time, and color change in thin films resulted from scratch damage.  相似文献
