Determination of power reflectivity of quasi-graded distributedBragg reflectors using stopband width

The authors examine the reflectivity of the quasi-graded distributed Bragg reflector using the stopband width. The stopband width of about 1000 Å for a reflectivity of about 99% is able to be measured with an accuracy of ± 1 Å. Thus, the reflectivity is determined with high accuracy from the stopband width. It is found that the quasi-graded distributed Bragg reflector is a high-quality reflector with high reflectivity and low resistance     

Lipid emulsions of palmitoylrhizoxin: effects of composition on lipolysis and biodistribution

Four types of lipid emulsion for highly lipophilic antitumour agent RS-1541 (13-O-palmitoylrhizoxin) with mean particle diameters of 200-260 nm were prepared using soybean oil (SOY) or dioctanoyldecanoylglycerol (ODO) for the oil phase and lecithin (LEC) or polyoxyethylene-(60)-hydrogenated castor oil (HCO-60) for surfactants. The lipolysis rate of HCO-60-emulsified emulsions by lipoprotein lipase was much slower than that of LEC-emulsified emulsions. Particle sizes of emulsions incubated in plasma with the lipase for six hours were 75%, 79%, 101%, and 93% of initial values for SOY/LEC, ODO/LEC, SOY/HCO-60, and ODO/HCO-60 emulsions, respectively, showing an apparent size decrease for LEC-emulsified emulsions. In rats, uptake clearance values of SOY/LEC and ODO/LEC emulsions of RS-1541 in the reticuloendothelial system (RES) were 81.2 and 135.3 mL h(-1), respectively, and AUC values were 4.0 and 1.3 microg h mL(-1), respectively. In contrast, RES uptake clearances of HCO-60 emulsions of RS-1541 were considerably lower (4.2 mL h(-1) for SOY/HCO-60; 2.2 mL h(-1) for ODO/HCO-60), resulting in high AUC values (35.4 microg h mL(-1) for SOY/ HCO-60; 63.9 microg h mL(-1) for ODO/HCO-60). The concentrations of RS-1541 in tumour tissues after an intravenous administration of ODO/HCO-60 emulsions of RS-1541 to mice bearing solid tumour M5076 sarcoma were about ten times higher than those after the administration of SOY/LEC emulsions. These results indicate that HCO-60 emulsions, compared with conventional LEC emulsions, are more stable to lipoprotein lipase and show low uptakes by RES organs, long circulations in the plasma, and high distributions in tumours. Thus, these sterically stabilized emulsions could show potential as effective carriers for highly lipophilic antitumour agents to enhance the drug delivery in tumours.     

Nano-scale fluctuations in electron beam resist pattern evaluated by atomic force microscopy

The resist pattern fluctuations on the nano-scale are successfully observed using a dynamic force mode AFM. A scaling analysis based on the fractals applies to the AFM images for quantitative evaluation of the fluctuations. The standard deviation of width fluctuations in a ZEP resist pattern is 2.8 nm. The scaling analysis confirms that the surface morphology of the pattern sidewall is almost the same as that of the resist film lightly exposed by an electron beam. The main cause of the fluctuation is structures with a diameter of 20–30 nm which are composed of large groups of molecules.     

Structural analysis of β-form poly(p-xylyene) starting from a high-resolution image

The crystal structure of β-form poly(p-xylylene) is analysed starting from a high-resolution image of a single crystal of this polymer. The high-resolution image corresponding to the projection of molecules onto the ab-plane along the chain axis shows clearly the mutual position of each molecule in a unit cell. The molecules are aligned wavily in the direction along the a-axis and the rough positions of their centres in a unit cell can be determined from the image. The refinement of the structure is carried out by the usual least-squares method using the intensities of electron and X-ray diffractions. The space group of the β-form is trigonal, P3, and the lattice dimensions are a=2.052 nm, c=0.655 nm and γ=120°. The unit cell contains 16 molecules and one of them is considered to occupy statistically one of three equivalent orientations so as to satisfy the P3 symmetry.     

Churg-Strauss syndrome diagnosed and followed with gastrointestinal fiberscopic studies and electroneuromyography

BACKGROUND: High immigration rates contribute to the high incidence of pediatric tuberculosis (TB) in San Diego, Calif. Adolescents frequently have poor access to health care and may not receive appropriate TB screening. School-based screening has been ineffective in detecting TB in other parts of the country. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of TB infection and disease in a high-risk population of high school students through school-based screening. DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS: Cross-sectional study of TB prevalence and an analysis of risk factors for TB infection in students attending 2 San Diego high schools with high percentages of non-US-born students. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Positive induration (> or =10 mm) with Mantoux tuberculin skin test. A chest radiograph or clinical findings consistent with active TB. RESULTS: A total of 744 (36%) students at high school 1 and 860 (57%) students at high school 2 participated. Ninety-five (12.8%) and 207 (24.1%) students, respectively, had positive tuberculin skin test results. One student had a chest radiograph that showed active TB. Smear for acid-fast bacteria and culture for Mycobacterium tuberculosis had negative results. Vietnamese, Filipino, and Latino ethnic groups were significantly more likely to have positive tuberculin skin test results than the white population (P<.05). Non-US-born students were significantly more likely to have positive tuberculin skin test results than US-born students in all ethnic groups except the Latino group. CONCLUSION: Although treatment of TB coupled with aggressive public health investigation is the most cost-beneficial way of preventing TB, targeted school-based screening may be an effective way of detecting TB infection in high-risk populations with poor access to health care.     

Uniform characteristics with low threshold and high efficiency fora single-transverse-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser-typedevice array

Vertical-to-surface transmission electrophotonic devices with a vertical-cavity are described. The individually accessed 12×4 arrays are characterized and demonstrated to have uniform room-temperature continuous-wave operating characteristics for a threshold current of ~2.8±0.15 mA and a slope efficiency of ~0.18±0.012 W/A with a single transverse mode. Both low threshold and high efficiency with 5% and 7% deviation, respectively, are achieved simultaneously. These devices can be used to constructing two-dimensional massively parallel optical interconnections
