Iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) is still a major public health problem and iodized salt remains the most effective means to control IDD in India. Few reports indicate that vegans have inadequate iodine intake while at the same time concerns are being raised on the implementation of universal salt iodization in the country. Therefore, we investigated the iodine content in bread, milk and commonly used Indian recipes prepared without iodized salt and the retention of inherent iodine therein. Results showed considerable iodine content in bread (25 μg/100 g) and milk (303 μg/L) as a positive fallout of universal salt iodization. Iodine content in 38 vegetarian recipes prepared without iodized salt was very low (2.9 ± 2.4 μg/100 g). Retention of inherent iodine (65.6 ± 15.4%) and iodine from iodized salt (76.7 ± 10.3%) in the same recipes was comparable. Thus, universal salt iodization programme remains the single most important source of dietary iodine for the Indian population. 相似文献

The hyperosmolality-gated calcium-permeable channels (OSCA) are pore-forming transmembrane proteins that function as osmosensors during various plant developmental processes and stress responses. In our analysis, through in silico approaches, a total of 42 OSCA genes are identified in the Triticum aestivum genome. A phylogenetic analysis reveals the close clustering of the OSCA proteins of Arabidopsis thaliana, Oryza sativa, and T. aestivum in all the clades, suggesting their origin before the divergence of dicots and monocots. Furthermore, evolutionary analyses suggest the role of segmental and tandem duplication events (Des) and purifying selection pressure in the expansion of the OSCA gene family in T. aestivum. Expression profiling in various tissue developmental stages and under abiotic and biotic stress treatments reveals the probable functioning of OSCA genes in plant development and the stress response in T. aestivum. In addition, protein–protein and protein–chemical interactions reveal that OSCA proteins might play a putative role in Ca2+-mediated developmental processes and adaptive responses. The miRNA interaction analysis strengthens the evidence for their functioning in various biological processes and stress-induced signaling cascades. The current study could provide a foundation for the functional characterization of TaOSCA genes in future studies. 相似文献

Severe hyperlipidemia is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Children with chronic kidney disease and end stage renal disease are at risk for development of hyperlipidemia. In this report, we describe a 7-month-old male infant with Denys–Drash syndrome who was found to have a “milky-layer” floating on the deaerator of the hemodialysis machine. Investigations showed severe hypertriglyceridemia of >1000 mg/dl. The patient had been on chronic continuous manual peritoneal dialysis until 6 months of age and recently had been switched to hemodialysis. Management included lowering of caloric intake and addition of medium chain triglyceride with reduction of the serum triglyceride levels to 300–400 mg/dl. Close monitoring of serum lipids and timely intervention is important to prevent serious complications associated with dyslipidemia. Observation of the “milky layer” in the deaerator of the hemodialysis machine may be an interesting visual clue of underlying severe hypertriglyceridemia. 相似文献

Antibiotic resistance has emerged as a global threat due to the ability of bacteria to quickly evolve in response to the selection pressure induced by anti-infective drugs. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop new antibiotics against resistant bacteria. In this review, we discuss pathways involving bacterial protein biogenesis as attractive antibacterial targets since many of them are essential for bacterial survival and virulence. We discuss the structural understanding of various components associated with bacterial protein biogenesis, which in turn can be utilized for rational antibiotic design. We highlight efforts made towards developing inhibitors of these pathways with insights into future possibilities and challenges. The present study is focused on a medical problem called stenosed carotid artery. The problem is formulated with the help of a two-phase blood flow model. The non-Newtonian nature of blood is considered that hold power law. Physical quantities were expressed in tensorial form. Analytical and numerical methods are used to solve equations under given boundary conditions. The effects of various parameters on blood flow like stenosis size, flow flux, resistance, haematocrit, pressure drop, etc. were studied and shown through various graphs. Parameter , which ensures that the fluid is Newtonian or non-Newtonian; its impact on pressure drop; resistance to flow; and flow flux were obtained during the disease and presented through the graph. A relationship between pressure drop and haematocrit was obtained, which was helpful to predict fluctuation in blood flow during stenosis. We have also given a medical use for this model with the help of pathological data. We also analyzed steady and laminar flow in a carotid artery for different heights of stenosis. The study of various physiological parameters has been performed on the basis of blockage percentage and concentration of haematocrit. The nature of the red blood corpuscle (RBC) phase is considered liquid packets in a semi-permeable membrane, which makes this model close to reality. 相似文献

Quasi-2D perovskites provide new opportunities for lighting and display applications due to their high radiative recombination and excellent stability. However, seldom attention has been placed on their self-stability/working operation under ambient storage. Herein, quasi-2D perovskites/Polyethylene oxide (PEO) films are studied, showing an unforeseen photo-brightening effect under ambient storage (i.e., an increase of the photoluminescence quantum yield from 55% to 74% after 100 days). In stark contrast, those stored under a dark/inert atmosphere show a significant decrease down to 38%. This counterintuitive phenomenon responds to the increasing radiative recombination rate caused by the passivation of the surface Br vacancies in the presence of physically adsorbed water molecules, as corroborated by in situ/ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Capitalizing on this surprising effect, stable light-emitting diodes (LEDs) using quasi-2D perovskites/PEO color filters are fabricated, realizing high stabilities of ≈400 h@10 mA under operating ambient conditions, representing a 20-fold enhancement compared to LEDs with 3D counter partners. Hence, this study reveals a unique insight into the impact of water passivation on the optical/structural properties of quasi-2D perovskite films, broadening their applications under operating ambient conditions. 相似文献
