A method for nitrate analysis based on second derivative UV/Visible spectroscopy was developed by Simal et al. (1985: Simal J., Lage M. A., and Iglesias I. (1985) Second derivative ultraviolet spectroscopy and sulfamic acid method for determination of nitrates in water. J. Assoc. Analyt. Chem. 68, 962-964) and Suzuki and Kuroda (1987: Suzuki, N. and Kuroda R. (1987) Direct simultaneous determination of nitrate and nitrite by ultraviolet second-derivative spectrophotometry. Analyst 112, 1077-1079), and later modified for the analysis of total nitrogen in aqueous samples of varying nitrate:organic nitrogen ratios (Crumpton et al., 1992: Crumption W. G., Isenhart T. M. and Mitchell P. D. (1992) Nitrate and organic N analyses with second-derivative spectroscopy. Limnol. Oceanogr. 37, 907-913). The procedure uses the second derivative of the absorption spectrum for nitrate (NO3-), which has a peak at approximately 224 nm that is proportional to the NO3- concentration. Samples for total N analysis are first oxidized to NO3- by persulfate digestion. The objectives of this study were to: (1) test the accuracy and precision of the second derivative method through the use of NIST-traceable wastewater check samples; (2) determine whether the second derivative method for nitrate analysis can be used for wastewater samples and whether the method compares favorably with other currently used nitrate analysis methods; and (3) use the method to analyze wastewater samples containing a range of nitrate and total nitrogen concentrations. Our results indicated that the method needed to be modified to include a longer digestion time (60 min) and dilution of samples prior to digestion (if needed). With the modified method, nitrogen recoveries were not significantly different (P > or = 0.05) from samples with known N concentrations. In addition, nitrate concentrations in constructed wetland and wastewater samples analyzed by both second derivative spectroscopy and ion chromatography were not significantly different. Total nitrogen concentrations in wastewater samples also compared favorably to the same samples analyzed by Kjeldahl digestion. The method is faster, simpler, requires smaller sample volumes, and generates less waste than many EPA-approved methods of N analysis, and may offer a suitable alternative to current methods for analysis of nitrate and total N in wastewater samples.  相似文献

Objective: PREDICT-HD is a large-scale international study of people with the Huntington disease (HD) CAG-repeat expansion who are not yet diagnosed with HD. The objective of this study was to determine the stage in the HD prodrome at which cognitive differences from CAG-normal controls can be reliably detected. Method: For each of 738 HD CAG-expanded participants, we computed estimated years to clinical diagnosis and probability of diagnosis in 5 years based on age and CAG-repeat expansion number (Langbehn, Brinkman, Falush, Paulsen, & Hayden, 2004). We then stratified the sample into groups: NEAR, estimated to be ≤9 years; MID, between 9 and 15 years; and FAR, ≥15 years. The control sample included 168 CAG-normal participants. Nineteen cognitive tasks were used to assess attention, working memory, psychomotor functions, episodic memory, language, recognition of facial emotion, sensory–perceptual functions, and executive functions. Results: Compared with the controls, the NEAR group showed significantly poorer performance on nearly all of the cognitive tests and the MID group on about half of the cognitive tests (p = .05, Cohen's d NEAR as large as ?1.17, MID as large as ?0.61). One test even revealed significantly poorer performance in the FAR group (Cohen's d = ?0.26). Individual tasks accounted for 0.2% to 9.7% of the variance in estimated proximity to diagnosis. Overall, the cognitive battery accounted for 34% of the variance; in comparison, the Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale motor score accounted for 11.7%. Conclusions: Neurocognitive tests are robust clinical indicators of the disease process prior to reaching criteria for motor diagnosis of HD. The current study examined important predictors of substance use during early adolescence. The authors hypothesized that adolescents' relationships with key adults (i.e., teachers and parents) influence their choices to use substances indirectly through links with their decisions regarding peer groups. A total of 461 middle school students from an affluent suburban community completed self-report measures of authoritative parenting, perceived social support from teachers, affiliation with rule-breaking and substance-using peers, and frequency of alcohol, cigarette, and drug use. Results of structural equation modeling supported the hypothesized model. Authoritative parenting and teacher support accounted for 31% of the variance in affiliation with deviant peers which, in turn, accounted for 27% of the variance in adolescent substance use; direct paths from parenting and teacher support to substance use were not indicated. We used Great Lakes hydrologic data and bird monitoring data from the Great Lakes Marsh Monitoring Program from 1995–2002 to: 1) evaluate trends and patterns of annual change in May-July water levels for Lakes Ontario, Erie, and Huron-Michigan, 2) report on trends of relative abundance for birds breeding in Great Lakes coastal marshes, and 3) correlate basin-wide and lake-specific annual indices of bird abundance with Great Lakes water levels. From 1995–2002, average May, June, and July water levels in all lake basins showed some annual variation, but Lakes Erie and Huron-Michigan had identical annual fluctuation patterns and general water level declines. No trend was observed in Lake Ontario water levels over this period. Abundance for five of seven marsh birds in Lake Ontario wetlands showed no temporal trends, whereas abundance of black tern (Chlidonias niger) declined and that of swamp sparrow (Melospiza georgiana) increased from 1995–2002. In contrast, abundances of American coot (Fulica americana), black tern, common moorhen (Gallinula chloropus), least bittern (Ixobrychus exilis), marsh wren (Cistorthorus palustris), pied-billed grebe (Podilymbus podiceps), sora (Porzana carolina), swamp sparrow, and Virginia rail (Rallus limicola) declined within marshes at Lakes Erie and Huron/Michigan from 1995–2002. Annual abundances of several birds we examined showed positive correlations with annual lake level changes in non-regulated Lakes Erie and Huron/Michigan, whereas most birds we examined in Lake Ontario coastal wetlands were not correlated with suppressed water level changes of this lake. Overall, our results suggest that long-term changes and annual water level fluctuations are important abiotic factors affecting abundance of some marsh-dependent birds in Great Lakes coastal marshes. For this reason, wetland bird population monitoring initiatives should consider using methods in sampling protocols, or during data analyses, to account for temporal and spatial components of hydrologic variability that affect wetlands and their avifauna.  相似文献

We examined relationships between depressive rumination, anger rumination, and features of borderline personality disorder in a sample of 93 students with a wide range of borderline symptoms. All completed self-report measures of borderline features; trait-level negative affect; depressive and anger rumination; and current symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. Depressive and anger rumination were strongly associated with borderline features after controlling for comorbid symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. Both types of rumination showed significant incremental validity over trait-level sadness, anger, and general negative affect in predicting borderline features. Relationships with borderline features were stronger for anger rumination than for depressive rumination. Relationships between trait-level negative affect and borderline features were substantially reduced when anger rumination was included in regression models, suggesting the need for longitudinal analyses of mediation. Findings suggest that severity of borderline symptoms is influenced by ruminative thinking in response to negative affect, especially anger. Larval fishes were sampled in the Milk River, Missouri River drainage, Montana from May to August 2002, 2003 and 2004 to describe temporal spawning distribution in relation to spring discharge. Total larval catch‐per‐unit‐effort (CPUE) in 2002 (28.9 fish/100 m3) was an estimated 29 times greater than in 2003 (0.99 fish/100 m3) and 16 times greater than in 2004 (1.78 fish/100 m3). In 2003 and 2004 more than one third of the total catch occurred before 12 June whereas in 2002, only 5% of the total catch occurred before 12 June. Marked differences in larval species composition were also observed between years, suggesting that a later peak in discharge may benefit some species and an earlier peak others. In 2002, when flows peaked later (at 77 m3 s?1), common carp Cyprinus carpio represented 37% of the total larval catch. Common carp were proportionally less abundant in 2003 (7.2%) and 2004 (1.4%) than in 2002. In 2004, when flows peaked (at 163 m3 s?1) 32 days earlier than in 2002 but only 15 days earlier than in 2003 (at 73 m3 s?1), shorthead redhorse Moxostoma macrolepidotum and suckers Catostomus sp. were the numerically dominant taxa. These results indicate that the timing, not necessarily the magnitude, of peak spring discharge may influence spawning success in the lower Milk River, as indicated by larval fish catches. Bulk unipolar diodes with a wide range of barrier heights have been made in hydrogenated amorphous silicon by ion implantation. The precise concentration of dopant atoms that can be obtained when implanting into an amorphous substrate leads to accurate barrier height control. The Process Industry Practices (PIP) initiative is the successful effort of a group of twenty-three process industry companies and eight engineering and construction companies to produce voluntary recommended practices for engineering, procurement, and construction of equipment and facilities in the continuous process industries. PIP's defined goal is to harmonize the technical requirements from the existing standards of major industrial users, contractors, and standards organizations into a single set of practices. This article gives a general overview of the organization's history, structure, and vision as well as the various technology areas currently developing PIPs. Here, we also address and describe some of the practices that have been developed specifically by the Electrical Function Team, providing examples of how taking the best ideas from many individual company specifications can result in standardization and savings to all users  相似文献
