Medical-economic models of benign prostatic hypertrophy

This article is designed to explain the importance of medico-economic models for evaluation of the impact of treatments of benign prostatic hyperplasia. The authors illustrate this approach by comparing two hypotheses: transurethral resection of the prostate versus watchful waiting using a Markov type of model. This model is able to simulate the probability of development of events such as transurethral resection of the prostate, acute urinary retention over a 40-year period by 3-month cycles. The model is also able to simulate the mean cost of management of a patient over this period. This type of model may appear slightly artificial and complicated, but it is the only model which could allow long-term simulations of the respective value of the various therapeutic strategies for BPH. This type of model is also evolutive, its performance is gradually improved as new data become available in the literature, allowing refinement of a number of hypotheses.

Effect of pre rigor stretching on beef tenderness development

The objective of this study was to determine effects of pre rigor stretching on beef tenderness development. Beef loins (M. longissimus dorsi; n=24) were assigned to either stretching or non-stretching treatments and aged for 14days at -1.5°C. Sarcomere length, shear force, water-holding capacity and proteolysis were determined for the loins at 1, 7 and 14days of ageing. Stretching increased the length of the loins by 33% resulting in a trend of increasing sarcomere length (P=0.19). However, no significant differences for shear force values, purge, drip and cooking losses between treatments were found. Shear force values decreased with ageing times (P<0.05). Western blot assay found that stretching did not affect the extent of desmin degradation. The findings from the present study suggest that pre rigor stretching with the current increase in length will not contribute to tenderness improvement of the beef loins.     

Disposal of Waste Plastics With Traditional Coking Process

A new technology for treating waste plastics （WP） by traditional coking process was introduced. With a thermo-balance and a 10 g atmospheric fixed bed reactor, the thermo-gravimetric behavior and product were studied during co-coking of WP with blended coal. And then, using a coke-oven with capacity of 200 kg, the characteristics of products were assessed. The results showed that there is an overlapping temperature range （200-550℃ ） of decomposition between WP and blended coal, and the pyrolysis synergism index η and synergism strength β proposed could evaluate the synergism between them. 1% of added WP results in the maximum synergism in all series experiments. The increase of added WP decreases the synergism. Tar yield in co-coking is increased with the decrease of water yield for synergism. Moreover, it was also found that the quality indexes of coke, such as M10, M40, CRI and CSR, are degraded with the increase of WP until 4%, though the quality of tar and gas is optimized for WP addition.

Peculiarities of phase formation in Al2O3-CeO2 nanopowders

The results of the investigations on the influence of CeO₂ adding on the transformation of the metastable Al₂O₃ forms obtained by thermal treatment of xerogels are presented. It is established that in the presence of CeO₂ the process of the formation of a stable phase of α-Al₂O₃ (corundum) takes place in a wider temperature range and is accomplished at a higher temperature (1300°C). It is suggested that the revealed mismatches on the diffractograms between the intensity values of the main analytical peaks of the corundum and its content in the samples are associated with the effect of screening caused by the differences in the mass coefficients of absorption of (μ) CeO₂ and Al₂O₃.

大新屯金矿区位于多宝山一大新屯整装勘查带上,矿体产于新元古代北宽河组地层,矿体赋存于北西向断裂内;地球化学Au、Ag、As、Sb、Hg低温元素浓集中心发育,元素套合叠合程度较高,异常北西向带状展布;开展的激电中梯异常显示低阻高极化特点,极化率异常与土壤化探异常展布方向及矿体产出位置较一致,钻孔查证表明激电测深高极化率异常与矿体深部产出位置吻合。花岗质及中性闪长质岩浆的上侵为矿体的形成提供了充足的热源。由于矿脉与岩浆之间存在着较为密切的时空关系,得出矿床为老地层＋构造＋岩浆的成矿规律。
