The food system faces increasing pressure from dynamic and interactive, environmental, political and socio-economic stressors.
Tackling the complexity that arises from such interactions requires a new form of 'adaptive governance'. This paper provides
a review of various conceptions of governance from a monocentric or politicotechnical understanding of governance through
to adaptive governance that is based in complex adaptive systems theory. The review is grounded by a critique of the existing
institutional structures responsible for food security in South Africa. The current Integrated Food Security Strategy and
tasked governmental departments are not sufficiently flexible or coordinated to deal with an issue as multi-scalar and multidisciplinary
as food security. However, actions taken in the non-governmental sector signal the emergence of a new type of governance.
Apart from an increasing recognition of food security as an issue of concern in the country, there is also evidence of a changing
governance structure including collaboration between diverse stakeholders. We review these governance trends with an understanding
of the food system as a complex adaptive socio-ecological system where actors in the food system self-organize into more flexible

This paper presents a computationally efficient method for using the dynamic wake meandering model to conduct simulations of wind farm power production. The method is based on creating a database, which contains the time and rotor‐averaged wake effect at any point downstream of a wake‐emitting turbine operating in arbitrary ambient conditions and at an arbitrary degree of wake influence. This database is later used as a look‐up table at runtime to estimate the operating conditions at all turbines in the wind farm, thus eliminating the need to run the dynamic wake meandering model at runtime. By using the proposed method, the time required to conduct wind farm simulations is reduced by three orders of magnitude compared with running the standalone dynamic wake meandering model at runtime. As a result, the wind farm production dynamics for a farm of 100 turbines at 10,000 different sets of ambient conditions run on a normal laptop in 1 h. The effect of diluent on flame structure and laminar burning speeds of JP-8/oxidizer/diluent premixed flames 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Experimental studies have been performed to investigate the flame structure and laminar burning speed of JP-8/oxidizer/diluent premixed flames at high temperatures and pressures. Three different diluents including argon, helium, and a mixture of 14% CO2 and 86% N2 (extra diluent gases), were used. The experiments were carried out in two constant volume spherical and cylindrical vessels. Laminar burning speeds were measured using a thermodynamics model based on the pressure rise method. Temperatures from 493 to 700 K and pressures from 1 to 11.5 atm were investigated. Extra diluent gases (EDG) decrease the laminar burning speeds but do not greatly impact the stability of the flame compared to JP-8/air. Replacing nitrogen in the air with argon and helium increases the range of temperature and pressure in the experiments. Helium as a diluent also increases the temperature and pressure range of stable flame as well as the laminar burning speed. Power law correlations have been developed for laminar burning speeds of JP-8/air/EDG and JP-8/oxygen/helium mixtures at a temperature range of 493-700 K and a pressure range of 1-10 atm for lean mixtures. 相似文献

Microneedles are small-scale devices that may be used for drug delivery and biosensing. In this study, the forces required for mechanical failure, the modes of mechanical failure, as well as the mechanisms for microneedle penetration into porcine skin were examined. Microneedles produced from the acrylate-based polymer e-Shell 200 using an indirect rapid prototyping approach involving two-photon polymerization and poly(dimethylsiloxane) micromolding were found to possess sufficient strength for penetration of porcine skin. The failure forces were an order of magnitude greater than the forces necessary for full insertion into the skin. Bending was the most common form of failure; an increasing aspect ratio and a decreasing tip diameter were associated with lower failure forces. Video captured during skin penetration revealed that microneedle penetration into the skin occurred by means of a series of insertions and not by means of a single insertion event. Images obtained during and after skin penetration confirmed microneedle penetration of skin as well as transdermal delivery of lucifer yellow dye. Particle contamination at the head–disk interface (HDI) is a major concern for the long-term reliability of hard disk drives. In the current study, it is shown that, surprisingly, soft and lubricious talc particles have a significant damaging effect on the friction performance of media lubricants, nanometer-thick perfluoropolyethers. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and the adsorption studies indicate that two mechanisms, Lewis acid–catalyzed decomposition and surface adsorption, are responsible for the observed tribological degradation. Nanoporous materials are currently being developed for use in implantable drug delivery systems, bioartificial organs, and
other novel medical devices. Advances in nanofabrication have made it possible to precisely control the pore size, pore distribution,
porosity, and chemical properties of pores in nanoporous materials. As a result, these materials are attractive for regulating
and sensing transport at the molecular level. In this work, the use of nanoporous membranes for biomedical applications is
reviewed. The basic concepts underlying membrane transport are presented in the context of design considerations for efficient
size sorting. Desirable properties of nanoporous membranes used in implantable devices, including biocompatibility and antibiofouling
behavior, are also discussed. In addition, the use of surface modification techniques to improve the function of nanoporous
membranes is reviewed. An intriguing possibility involves functionalizing nanoporous materials with smart polymers in order
to modulate biomolecular transport in response to pH, temperature, ionic concentration, or other stimuli. These efforts open

Biomarkers are crucial in oncology, from detection and monitoring to guiding management and predicting treatment outcomes. Histological assessment of tissue biopsies is currently the gold standard for oropharyngeal cancers, but is technically demanding, invasive, and expensive. This systematic review aims to review current markers that are detectable in biofluids, which offer promising non-invasive alternatives in oropharyngeal carcinomas (OPCs). A total of 174 clinical trials from the PubMed search engine in the last 5 years were identified and screened by 4 independent reviewers. From these, 38 eligible clinical trials were found and subsequently reviewed. The biomarkers involved, categorized by human papillomavirus (HPV)-status, were further divided according to molecular and cellular levels. Recent trials investigating biomarkers for both HPV-positive and HPV-negative OPCs have approaches from various levels and different biofluids including plasma, oropharyngeal swabs, and oral rinse. Promising candidates have been found to aid in detection, staging, and predicting prognosis, in addition to well-established factors including HPV-status, drinking and smoking status. These studies also emphasize the possibility of enhancing prediction results and increasing statistical significance by multivariate analyses. Liquid biopsies offer promising assistance in enhancing personalized medicine for cancer treatment, from lowering barriers towards early screening, to facilitating de-escalation of treatment. However, further research is needed, and the combination of liquid biopsies with pre-existing methods, including in vivo imaging and invasive techniques such as neck dissections, could also be explored in future trials. 相似文献
