Poor air quality within swine concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) poses a threat to workers, the surrounding community, and farm production. Accordingly, the current study was conducted to evaluate a technology for reducing air pollution including particulate matter (PM), viable bacteria, and ammonia within such a facility. The technology consists of an acid-oil-alcohol aerosol applied daily. Its effectiveness was evaluated by comparing air quality from before to after treatment and between treated and untreated sides of a barn separated by an impervious partition. On the untreated side, air quality was typical for a swine CAFO, with mean PM2.5 of 0.28 mg/m3 and PM(TOT) of 1.5 mg/m3. The treatment yielded a reduction in PM concentration of 75-90% from before to after treatment. Effectiveness increased with time, application, and particle size (40% reduction for 1 microm and 90% for >10 microm). Airborne bacteria levels (total bacteria, Enterobacteriaceae, and gram-positive cocci) decreased one logarithmic unit after treatment. In contrast, treatment had no effect on ammonia concentrations. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of an intervention in yielding exposure and emission reductions.  相似文献

The secondary metabolites produced by bacterial species serve many clinically useful purposes, and Streptomyces have been an abundant source of such compounds. However, a poor understanding of their regulatory cascades leads to an inability to isolate all of the secondary metabolites this genus is capable of producing. This study focuses on comparing synthetic small molecules that were found to alter the production of secondary metabolites in Streptomyces coelicolor. A survey of these molecules suggests that each has a distinct mechanism of action, and hence, could be used as a unique probe of secondary metabolism. A comparative analysis of two of these molecules, ARC2 and ARC6, confirmed that they modulate secondary metabolites in different ways. In a separate study, ARC2 was shown to give rise to a different phenotype through the inhibition of a target in fatty acid biosynthesis. The results of this study suggest that ARC6 does not have the same target, although it might target the same metabolic system. Furthermore, the results demonstrate that ARC2 and ARC6 act through distinct mechanisms and further suggest that chemical probes can be important tools in enhancing our understanding of secondary metabolism and the streptomycete life cycle.  相似文献

The n-6 and n-3 fatty acid status of developing organs is the cumulative result of the diet lipid composition and many complex events of lipid metabolism. Little information is available, however, on the potential effects of the saturated fatty acid chain length (8:0–16:0) or oleic acid (18:1) content of the diet on the subsequent metabolism of the essential fatty acids 18:2n-6 and 18:3n-3 and their elongated/desaturated products. The effects of feeding piglets formulas with fat blends containing either coconut oil (12:0±14:0) or medium chain triglycerides (MCT, 8:0±10:0) but similar levels of 18:1, 18:2n-6 and 18:3n-3, or MCT with high or low 18:1 but constant 18:2n-6 and 18:3n-3 on the fatty acid composition of plasma, liver and kidney triglycerides, phospholipids and cholesteryl esters, and of brain total lipid, were studied. Diet-induced changes in the fatty acid composition of lipid classes were generally similar for plasma, liver and kidney. Dietary 18:1 content was reflected in tissue lipids and was inversely associated with levels of 18:2n-6. Lower percentage of 18:2n-6, however, was not associated with lower levels of its elongated/desaturated product 20:4n-6 but was associated with higher levels of 22:6n-3. Feeding coconut oilvs. MCT resulted in lower 18:1 levels in all lipids, and higher percentages of 20:4n-6 in tissue phospholipid. Increasing the dietary n-6/n-3 ratio from 5 to 8 significantly increased tissue percentage of 18:2n-6 and decreased phospholipid 22:6n-3. In contrast to plasma, liver and kidney, brain lipid fatty acid composition was not influenced by the formula saturated fatty acid chain length, content of 18:1, or n-6/n-3 ratio. In summary, the studies show that the dietary requirement for n-6 and n-3 fatty acids may be influenced by the nonessential saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids fed concurrently.  相似文献

Organosolv lignin was fractionated on a Sephadex G 75 column with 0.1M aqueous NaOH resulting in 14 fractions. These fractions were acetylated and a high-molecular-weight fraction (F3) was investigated by means of combined static and dynamic light scattering (LS) in solvents acetone, tetrahydrofuran (THF), and trifluoroethanol (TFE). The measurements were found to be reproducible, and recycling of lignin by freeze drying caused slight but unessential changes in solution properties. Depending on the solvent used, weight average molecular weights Mw between two and ten million were found. By contrast, Mn of the fractions, measured by vapor pressure osmometry (VPO), was in the range of a few thousands only. Analysis of the angular dependence in static LS by means of a Casassa–Holtzer plot and the fractal dimensions showed the presence of chain stiffness, most distinct in TFE. Also, the dynamic light scattering results in TFE are typical for semiflexible chains, while in THF, and to some extent in acetone, the dynamic measurements including viscosity suggest the presence of spherical structures. These findings are being explained by large lignin clusters that consist of stiff subunits.  相似文献

Phytoremediation has been proposed for the elimination of toxic metals in soil, yet little attention has been given to the performance of insects that feed on contaminant-tolerant plants. We tested the performance of two herbivores with different feeding behaviors, the cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni, and the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae, reared on cadmium-tolerant Brassica juncea plants that contained different concentrations of cadmium. We also tested the performance of the aphid parasitoid Aphidius colemani developing in aphids reared on plants with different levels of cadmium. The hypothesis tested was that the chewing insect would be more negatively affected than the sucking insect, because of the localization of cadmium within the host plant, and that the aphid parasitoid would not be affected. We also compared the performance of T. ni on artificial diet with different levels of cadmium. Neither the phloem-feeding aphid nor its parasitoid was affected by cadmium in the host plant. The effects of cadmium on the foliage-feeding cabbage looper varied, with negative effects on development observed in experiments with artificial diet but not in those using natural host plants. These data, together with information available in the literature, support the idea that the effects of toxic metals present in a host plant may be influenced by a herbivore’s feeding strategy. However, a wide range of chewing and sucking species needs to be tested to confirm this hypothesis.  相似文献

Excessive foaming in multistage flash desalination plants can give rise to salt-contaminated distillate and reduced operating efficiency. Plant operating variations in pressure, temperature, flow, and seawater feed composition and alkalinity can perturb vapor/liquid equilibria, resulting in increased levels of foam. Since such foaming is not always controlled by mechanical means, additives are often needed to control foaming level.In addition to controlling foam, a useful additive must not interfere with heat transfer or with the performance of the scale control additive; it must not contain steam-volatile components that can contaminate the distillate; it must be stable at MSF operating temperatures and residence times; and it should be compatible with the antiscalant feed solution.Antifoam performance data for over 60 candidates in 7 chemical classes were determined according to these criteria. The most effective structural class was found to be the polyglycol monoalkyl ethers. Foam control effectiveness within this class was shown to be a function of ethylene oxide content and alkyl chain length. The most effective additive found in this study is offered commercially as FLOCON Antifoam AF-4. FLOCON AF-4 has been used successfully in high-temperature MSF plants.  相似文献

The comparative influence on plasma and tissue lipids of dietary soybean and egg lecithins, which have contrasting fatty acid compositions, was studied in the hypercholesterolemic guine apig. The polyunsaturated to saturated fatty acid (P/S) ratios of the soybean and egg lecithins were 3.4 and 0.38, respectively. Hypercholesterolemia was induced by feeding guinea pigs a purified diet that contained 15% lard enriched with 0.5% cholesterol. Subsequently, guinea pigs were fed for six wk the same diet supplemented with either soybean or egg lecithin as 7.5% of the diet. A control group continued to be fed the lecithin-free diet. Parameters measured included body weight and relative liver weight; in plasma, total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC), phospholipid, and nonesterified cholesterol; in liver, total fat, cholesterol, and the specific activity of the catabolic enzyme cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase; (EC 1.14.13.17); and in the aorta, cholesterol. Among the most noteworthy observations were the 49% decrease in total plasma cholesterol of the soybean lecithin group without decreasing HDLC and the 177% increase in HDLC of the egg lecithin group without a significant increase in total cholesterol compared with those values in the control group. These data suggest that dietary lecithin is particularly effective in increasing the HDLC/total cholesterol ratio in plasma. However, the absolute concentrations of those plasma lipids seem to depend upon the fatty acid composition of the lecithin.
