Cadmium and zinc accumulation in soybean: A threat to food safety?   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
A greenhouse study was conducted to quantify cadmium and zinc accumulated by soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) when the metals were supplied separately and together. The highest dose of cadmium (100 mg/kg) reduced plant height and dry weight (down to 40% and 34% of control, respectively); the highest dose of zinc (2000 mg/kg) reduced plant height to 55% of control and dry weight to 70% of control. With both metals present, the plants were approximately the same size as those treated with cadmium only. The concentration of cadmium in the roots was unaffected by zinc. In other tissues, the effect of zinc on the accumulation of cadmium depended on the doses provided. At low doses, the addition of zinc reduced the concentration of cadmium in aboveground tissues to 40-50% of that found in plants exposed to cadmium only. However, when applied in high doses, the presence of zinc in cadmium-contaminated soils increased the uptake and accumulation of cadmium in aboveground tissues by up to 42%. In contrast, at high doses, the presence of cadmium in zinc-contaminated soil resulted in approximately 35% lower concentrations of zinc in all tissues. At a lower dose, cadmium had no effect on concentration of zinc in the plant tissues. The effects of high doses of one metal on the uptake of the other metal can be partially explained by the effects of one metal on the bioavailability of the other metal. In soils to which only one metal was added, bioavailable cadmium was 70-80% of the total cadmium, and bioavailable zinc was 50-70% of the total zinc. When both metals were added to the soil, 80-100% of the cadmium and 46-60% of the zinc were bioavailable. Concentrations of both metals were highest in root tissues (10-fold higher for cadmium, and up to 2-fold higher for zinc). Although relatively little cadmium was translocated to pods and seeds, the seeds of all plants (including those from control and zinc-treated plants) had concentrations of cadmium 3-4 times above the limit of 0.2 mg/kg set by the Codex Alimentarius Commission. This was surprising given that cadmium in the soil was only 1 mg/kg well below the maximum allowable amount for agricultural soil. While it is possible that more cadmium was accumulated by plants in this study than that which might occur under agricultural field conditions, these results reinforce the need to monitor concentrations of toxic metals in food crops.  相似文献

This article details the analysis of two conducting shafts operating on blowers of a tunnel dryer. A deductive analysis was applied looking toward a successful recognition of root cause(s), where based on knowledge of background, and failure characteristics, multiple hypothesis are exposed that are further confirmed or rejected according to different tests, material analysis or maintenance history. In both shafts, failure arises from inadequate repairing. In order to confirm this, the failure analysis methodology included the following steps: technical review, visual inspection, fractography, penetrating inks, metallography, optic microscopy and stress analysis. Evidence obtained through these techniques indicates a fatigue failure induced by inadequate repairing procedures; therefore, main recommendation is to take the necessary precautions in order to guarantee minimal alterations on shaft geometry or material microstructure.  相似文献

A new methodology for the calibration of bond microparameters in rocks represented by a package of joined random spherical particles in the discrete element method (DEM) framework is presented. Typically, calibration is achieved through a trial-and-error procedure using several DEM simulations of uniaxial compressive tests (UCTs). The bond calibration model (BCM) does not need a time-dependent UCT-DEM simulation to establish the relation between the microproperties of the bond and the macroproperties of the rock specimen. The BCM uses matrices to describe the interaction forces exerted by bonds and, by means of an assembly process similar to the finite element method, it can describe the complex network of bonds, enabling the model to capture small variations in particle size and bond distribution as demonstrated in this work. In this work, the BCM is presented and compared with UCT simulations performed using Esys Particle software. Multiple simulations are done with constant bond properties and different particle size ratios (\(D_{MAX}/D_{MIN})\) that cause small variations in the specimen’s Young’s modulus; these variations are well captured by the BCM with an error of <10%.  相似文献

Bionanocomposite scaffolds comprised of nanomaterials and the extracellular matrix (ECM) of porcine diaphragm tissue capitalizes on the benefits of utilizing a natural ECM material, while also potentially enhancing physicomechanical properties and biocompatibility through nanomaterials. Gold nanoparticle (AuNP) bionanocomposite scaffolds were subjected to a number of characterization techniques to determine whether the fabrication process negatively impacted the properties of the porcine diaphragm tissue and whether the AuNP improved the properties of the tissue. Tensile testing and differential scanning calorimetry demonstrated that the bionanocomposite possessed improved tensile strength and thermal stability relative to natural tissue. The collagenase assay and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy additionally confirmed that denaturation of the collagen of the ECM did not occur. The novel bionanocomposite scaffold possessed properties similar to commercially available scaffolds and will be further developed for soft tissue applications such as hernia repair through in vivo studies in an animal model.  相似文献

A team of faculty members at the University of Denver changed the learning environment in key courses in the Department of Engineering from predominately teacher centered to student centered. Through this funded project new grading methods were implemented, classrooms were renovated and wired with studio layouts to facilitate learning, the Engineering Circuits Laboratory was rewired and instrumented for automated data acquisition and reporting, and two new pedagogical approaches were developed. At the onset of the project, six goals were established related to student learning. The introduction of industry standard hardware and software provided students with unprecedented hands‐on experience and project related activities stimulated faculty innovations in other current and future courses. Assessment results indicate that the new grading system improved the clarity of expectations for students before assignments were given resulting in increased reported motivation for learning in many courses. Even though course GPAs did not always reflect higher achievement on graded work, faculty members firmly believe that deeper understanding was achieved because more complex material was assimilated.  相似文献

Phytoestrogens are a group of polyphenolic plant metabolites that can induce biological responses. Their bioactivity is based on their similarity to 17beta-estradiol and their ability to bind to the beta-estrogen receptor. Although epidemiological data are inconclusive, phytoestrogens are considered to be beneficial for a variety of conditions, for example, hormone-related cancers like breast and prostate cancer. To investigate the biological effects of these compounds and to assess the exposure of larger cohorts or the general public, reliable data on the phytoestrogen content of food is necessary. Previously, food analysis for phytoestrogens was performed using either HPLC-UV or GC/MS. Here, we describe the development of the first generic method for the analysis of phytoestrogens in food, using automated solid-phase extraction and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The presented method shows a good reproducibility and can be easily adapted to other phytoestrogens if required.  相似文献

Reviews the book, Self-Relations in the Psychotherapy Process by J. Christopher Muran (see record 2000-16556-000). The self is alive and well and living in psychology, at least if the contributors to J. Christopher Muran's stimulating volume, Self-Relations in the Psychotherapy Process, are to be taken seriously. The self is a central construct in psychoanalytic, humanistic, and cognitive-behavioral theories, but nowadays even some radical behaviorists find the self to be an important concept. Thus, the present is a propitious time for a book that presents the major theoretical approaches to the self in psychotherapy and, fortunately for us, Muran, by gathering the views of leading psychodynamic, humanistic, cognitive-behavioral, and radical behavioral thinkers, has assembled a volume of almost uniformly high quality. Inspired by postmodernism, especially by the growing popularity of dialogic and perspectival epistemologies, Muran has a constructed this book as a set of six dialogues among contributors of varying theoretical persuasions, and although I doubt that dialogic and perspectival epistemologies are necessarily postmodern, I nevertheless find that this volume's dialogic structure makes for interesting reading and adds to its intellectual contributions. Because Muran's contention, with which I agree, is that the self is not an isolated entity but rather part of a relational matrix, it is perhaps necessary for this book to be structured dialogically. Whether postmodern or not, this book is an important one, one that conveys a great deal about what it means to be human as we enter the 21st century. Numerous studies have revealed autonomic underarousal in conduct-disordered adolescents and antisocial adults. It is unknown, however, whether similar autonomic markers are present in at-risk preschoolers. In this study, the authors compared autonomic profiles of 4- to 6-year-old children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD; n = 18) with those of age-matched controls (n = 20). Children with ADHD and ODD exhibited fewer electrodermal responses and lengthened cardiac preejection periods at baseline and during reward. Although group differences were not found in baseline respiratory sinus arrhythmia, heart rate changes among ADHD and ODD participants were mediated exclusively by parasympathetic withdrawal, with no independent sympathetic contribution. Heart rate changes among controls were mediated by both autonomic branches. These results suggest that at-risk preschoolers are autonomically similar to older externalizing children. Contingency management (CM) treatments are efficacious in treating cocaine abuse. Despite high prevalence rates of alcohol dependence (AD) among individuals with cocaine use disorders, relatively little data are available regarding whether comorbid AD is associated with poorer treatment outcomes in general, or in response to CM in particular. Using data from 3 randomized trials of CM for cocaine abuse, we compared cocaine abusers (N = 393) with and without AD in terms of abstinence and psychosocial problems during treatment and follow-up. Alcohol dependent participants had more lifetime years of cocaine and alcohol use and greater severity of alcohol and psychiatric problems. CM was positively and significantly associated with longer durations of abstinence, regardless of AD status. Although not significantly associated with abstinence, the presence of AD was related to improvement in medical and alcohol-related problems during treatment, and these gains were maintained posttreatment. The results suggest that cocaine abusers benefit equally well from CM treatments, regardless of AD status. Further, alcohol dependent participants are able to offset greater baseline severity in psychosocial functioning and maintain these improvements with CM. Multicultural competence has become a mainstay within the training of professional psychologists, yet important areas within this framework remain to be more fully addressed. In particular, the dynamics of contemporary forms of racism have largely gone unexplored, depriving psychologists of clear direction in exploring the deepest levels of racist influences in their work. This qualitative analysis sought to shed light into this area by studying White people's experiences of race and racism. Although most affirmed the existence of racism, it was "spun" by most White participants--in other words, interpreted to their own advantage-into a problem that lies outside the scope of their own lives and responsibilities.
