The aberrations introduced when focusing within a specimen with a refractive index equal to that of water using an oil-immersion objective are investigated theoretically. The peak intensity in the confocal point spread function drops by a factor of two for focusing less than 10 μm into the specimen. The effects on scaling of dimensions in the resulting images are discussed. The image exhibits an axial stretching by a factor of about 1.12. 相似文献

The underlying basis for the behaviour of a population of cells is the cell growth and division cycles of the individual cells. Under certain special circumstances, oscillations in cell cultures can be observed that are a reflection of metabolic oscillations, such as in glycolysis, or cell cycle oscillations from a partially synchronized population. These oscillations can sometimes occur spontaneously, as in the chemostat culture of Saccharomyces cerevisiae at low dilution rates, or can be induced using chemical blockers or entrainment by a periodic nutrient environment. Continuous methods for inducing a synchronized culture include the pulsed chemostat, continuous phasing and self-cycling fermentation. Results obtained by studying both spontaneously oscillating cultures and synchronized cultures have provided insight into the mechanisms responsible for the progress and control of the cell cycle as well as the intimate relationship that exists between the cellular dynamics and the dynamics of the environment. 相似文献

Ordered microporous carbons containing dispersed platinum nanoparticles were fabricated and chosen as suitable models to investigate micro-structure development and hydrogen transport properties of zeolite-templated carbons. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that the enhanced heat of adsorption is related to the narrow micro-channels templated from the zeolite and the presence of certain CO groups on the carbon. The lack of a well-defined and intense rotational transition line and the persistent broad H2 recoil spectrum in neutron scattering results suggests a distribution of binding sites. Most interestingly, hydrogen diffusion occurs on two time scales, consisting of a fast liquid-like jump diffusion on the timescale of picoseconds along with an even faster bulk-like diffusion. The liquid-like motion is characterized by a diffusion constant of (2.1 ± 0.3) × 10−8 m2/s with an activation energy of ca. 77 K; both values indicate somewhat lower mobility than similar dynamics of H2 on nanotubes, activated carbon XC-72, or Grafoil, yet greater mobility than that of bulk liquid. These unusual characteristics for hydrogen in carbons are believed to arise from the network of narrow pores in this zeolite-templated image of the zeolite. This study examined the longitudinal effects of 2 first-grade universal preventive interventions on academic outcomes (e.g., achievement, special education service use, graduation, postsecondary education) through age 19 in a sample of 678 urban, primarily African American children. The classroom-centered intervention combined the Good Behavior Game (H. H. Barrish, Saunders, & Wolfe, 1969) with an enhanced academic curriculum, whereas a second intervention, the Family–School Partnership, focused on promoting parental involvement in educational activities and bolstering parents’ behavior management strategies. Both programs aimed to address the proximal targets of aggressive behavior and poor academic achievement. Although the effects varied by gender, the classroom-centered intervention was associated with higher scores on standardized achievement tests, greater odds of high school graduation and college attendance, and reduced odds of special education service use. The intervention effects of the Family–School Partnership were in the expected direction; however, only 1 effect reached statistical significance. The findings of this randomized controlled trial illustrate the long-term educational impact of preventive interventions in early elementary school. The expression contains two arbitrary parameters, which can be, for example, an original phase curvature together with a scaling parameter or, alternatively, the order of fractional transformation. Phase can be retrieved from intensity measurements with the intensity transport equation. Three-dimensional image formation of weak phase objects based on this method is investigated. It is shown that, although the refractive index of a thin object can be measured, the three-dimensional variation of refractive index of an arbitrary object cannot, in general, be reconstructed, as spatial frequencies with a zero-axial component are not detected. Millions of children worldwide are born with defects known as cleft lips and palates. These defects cause major deformities to a person's face, and can lead to other health problems. Unfortunately, many children with such defects cannot afford the surgery required to correct the problem. The Smile Train is a charity which provides free training, education and equipment to help local doctors perform reconstructive surgery on children in poorer countries. The, factors making The Smile Train a success include a global network of partners and programs in combination with leveraging technology to accelerate learning results. The technology comes in three forms: an online searchable library containing thousands of research articles related to cleft surgery; Smile Train Express, a free, secure, Web-based patient database accessible to the global cleft community; and a virtual surgery CD-ROM collection that includes training videos. The general polarization behavior of almost-plane waves, in which the electric field varies slowly over a circular pupil, is considered, on the basis of an axial Hertz potential treatment and expansion in Zernike polynomials. The resultant modes of a circular aperture are compared with the well-known waveguide (or optical fiber) modes and Gaussian beam modes. The wave can be decomposed into partial waves of electric and magnetic types. The modes for a square pupil are also considered. The particular application of the effect on polarization of focusing the waves is discussed. Another application discussed is the Fresnel reflection from a dielectric interface, it being shown that the Fresnel reflection alters the relative strength of the electric and magnetic components. 相似文献
