AbstractProblem, research strategy, and findings: The impact of density on emerging highly contagious infectious diseases has rarely been studied. In theory, dense areas lead to more face-to-face interaction among residents, which makes them potential hotspots for the rapid spread of pandemics. On the other hand, dense areas may have better access to health care facilities and greater implementation of social distancing policies and practices. The current COVID-19 pandemic is a perfect case study to investigate these relationships. Our study uses structural equation modeling to account for both direct and indirect impacts of density on the COVID-19 infection and mortality rates for 913?U.S. metropolitan counties, controlling for key confounding factors. We find metropolitan population to be one of the most significant predictors of infection rates; larger metropolitan areas have higher infection and higher mortality rates. We also find that after controlling for metropolitan population, county density is not significantly related to the infection rate, possibly due to more adherence to social distancing guidelines. However, counties with higher densities have significantly lower virus-related mortality rates than do counties with lower densities, possibly due to superior health care systems.Takeaway for practice: These findings suggest that connectivity matters more than density in the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Large metropolitan areas with a higher number of counties tightly linked together through economic, social, and commuting relationships are the most vulnerable to the pandemic outbreaks. They are more likely to exchange tourists and businesspeople within themselves and with other parts, thus increasing the risk of cross-border infections. Our study concludes with a key recommendation that planners continue to advocate dense development for a host of reasons, including lower death rates due to infectious diseases like COVID-19. 相似文献

This paper examines the influence of competition among supply chain partners on product demand. A power law demand function that depends on product pricing and shelf-space allocation (SSA) is used. The exponents in the power law are given by the elasticities of demand. In order to achieve the optimal pricing and SSA strategies in the presence of competition, game-theory-based methodologies—Cournot and Stackelberg games—are employed. For each type of game, a Nash equilibrium is achieved by optimizing the profit as a function of demand and price. A case study is presented to demonstrate the potential of this methodology. The results of this study indicate (1) how to achieve optimal pricing and SSA strategies, (2) how manufacturers can influence demand for a product, (3) that both prices and profits decrease using the Stackelberg game as compared with the Cournot game, and (4) that coordination beyond simple knowledge of price would be beneficial for improving overall profits. 相似文献

The authors propose a new design concept for controlling the deflection of a micro-membrane with the aid of its thickness distribution for realizing a prescribed design in the MEMS. As an example, the authors treat a micro air pump that comprises a micro-membrane. The membrane is actuated by an electrostatic force. The membrane deflects and thus the deflection is influenced by the air pressure and the electrostatic field. This is a highly complicated system. The combination of pulsed electric fields (PEF) and texturizing and antifreeze agents on quality retention of defrosted potato strips were studied. Potato strips (10 mm thickness, 100 g) were placed in different solutions (1% w/v) of CaCl2, glycerol, trehalose as well as NaCl and sucrose, treated with PEF (0.5 kV cm?1, 100 pulses, 4 Hz). Then, all the samples were soaked in the same solutions for 10 min. After draining, samples were packed into polypropylene pouches and stored at ?18 °C for 12 h. Samples were thawed out at room temperature (20 °C) in 3 h. Untreated controls and PEF treated control samples were also frozen and thawed in similar conditions. To assess the potato strip quality, the thawed samples were analysed for moisture content, weight loss, firmness and colour attributes. The results indicate that PEF treatment by itself is not a suitable pre‐treatment method for frozen potato strips and should be assisted by CaCl2 and trehalose treatment to prevent softening after defrosting. Firmness analyses determined that application of PEF alone results in 2.38 N. However, PEF in combination with CaCl2 and trehalose result in 2.97 N and 2.99 N, respectively, which are both significantly firmer than the samples solely treated with PEF. CaCl2 and trehalose were effective in not only maintaining the structural integrity of the cells, but also retaining colour attributes. The L* value was found to be higher (P < 0.05) in CaCl2 and trehalose treated samples (58.95 and 57.21, respectively), as compared to PEF treated samples (53.97) denoting a darker colour. Application of CaCl2 and trehalsoe in combination with PEF also resulted in significantly less weight loss after thawing. 相似文献

The effects of conventional (CV) and microwave (MW) heating on total soluble solid (TSS) content, total anthocyanin content (TAC), total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity of raspberry juice obtained from two cultivars of Amol (AM) and Siyahkal (SK) were scrutinised. Antioxidant activity of the juices was measured by 2,2 diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging capacity and expressed as EC50 value. In the both methods, the concentration rate constant for the juices was significantly decreased by increasing operational pressure from 12 to 100 kPa (P < 0.05). A first‐order reaction kinetic model was successfully fitted for the degradation of monomeric anthocyanins at all operating pressures. The results also showed that thermal treatment of MW compared CV in both SK and AM cultivars caused a lower decrease in the TAC, TPC and antioxidant activity. Moreover, the changes in trend of the antioxidant activities due to the thermal treatment were positively correlated with the TPC (r = 0.74, P < 0.05) and TAC (r = 0.61, P < 0.05). 相似文献

Black mulberry and pomegranate juices were concentrated by conventional and microwave heating at different operational pressures (7.3, 12, 38.5, and 100 kPa). The effects of each heating method on the phytochemical changes (total anthocyanin content and antioxidant activity) of juices were investigated. The effect of various heating methods on the profile of the pomegranate anthocyanins were conducted using high-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (HPLC–MS). The main anthocyanins of pomegranate quantified by HPLC–MS were cyanidin, delphidin, pelargonidin, 3-glucoside, and 3, 5-diglucoside. In black mulberry juice, the final juice concentration of 42° Brix was achieved in 140, 120, and 95 min at 100, 38.5, and 7.3 kPa respectively and the final pomegranate juice concentration of 40° Brix was achieved in 140, 127, and 109 min at 100, 38.5, and 12 kPa respectively by using a rotary evaporator. Applying microwave energy decreased the required times to 115, 95, and 60 min for black mulberry juice and to 118, 95, and 75 min for pomegranate juice. The corrosion behaviour of AISI 316L, wrought Co–28Cr–6Mo and Ti–6Al–4V was studied in aerated solutions of phosphate buffered saline (PBS) at various concentrations of bovine serum albumin (BSA) at 37 °C. Open circuit potential, potentiodynamic polarization, linear polarization resistance (LPR) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) experiments along with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) on Co–28Cr–6Mo oxide layer were conducted to study the interaction of BSA and passive layers and to measure the corrosion rates. Ti–6Al–4V alloy had the lowest corrosion rate and the highest breakdown potential. It was shown that BSA has enhanced the alloy passive film stability at higher concentrations. 相似文献

In this study, a novel synthesis method of TiO2 powders that can be cold sprayed is presented. The synthesis technique is a simple hydrolysis method of titanyl sulfate (TiOSO4) in distilled water with a small addition of inorganic salt. At a relatively low hydrolysis temperature, pure anatase TiO2 can be obtained and post-synthesis treatments (annealing or hydrothermal treatment) do not alter this phase structure. The powder is agglomerated with fine nano primary particles, with different post-synthesis treatments leading to different TiO2 nanostructures. Annealing causes a significant growth of primary particles with the existence of internal pores within a particle. On the other hand, hydrothermal treatment produces a unique oriented agglomeration structure where the primary particles are agglomerated in one single crystal axes. It is believed that the synergistic effect of inorganic ion adsorption and post-treatments results in the observed nanostructures.
