Most solid rockets are powered by ammonium perchlorate (AP) composite propellant including aluminum particles. As aluminized composite propellant burns, aluminum particles agglomerate as large as above 100 μm diameter on the burning surface, which in turn affects propellant combustion characteristics. The development of composite propellants has a long history. Many studies of aluminum particle combustion have been conducted. Optical observations indicate that aluminum particles form agglomerates on the burning surface of aluminized composite propellant. They ignite on leaving the burning surface. Because the temperature gradient in the reaction zone near a burning surface influences the burning rate of a composite propellant, details of aluminum particle agglomeration, agglomerate ignition, and their effects on the temperature gradient must be investigated. In our previous studies, we measured the aluminum particle agglomerate diameter by optical observation and collecting particles. We observed particles on the burning surface, the reaction zone, and the luminous flame zone of an ammonium perchlorate (AP)/ammonium nitrate (AN) composite propellant. We confirmed that agglomeration occurred in the reaction zone and that the agglomerate diameter decreased with increasing the burning rate. In this study, observing aluminum particles in the reaction zone near the burning surface, we investigated the relation between the agglomerates and the burning rate. A decreased burning rate and increased added amount of aluminum particles caused a larger agglomerate diameter. Defining the extent of the distributed aluminum particles before they agglomerate as an agglomerate range, we found that the agglomerate range was constant irrespective of the added amount of aluminum particles. Furthermore, the agglomerate diameter was ascertained from the density of the added amount of aluminum particles in the agglomerate range. We concluded from the heat balance around the burning surface that the product of the agglomerate range and the burning rate was nearly constant irrespective of the added amount of aluminum particles. The production process for expanded polypropylene foam beads (EPP), which consists of steaming, depressurizing, cooling, and ageing operations, was consistently simulated by a set of mathematical models. The models, developed from Yang and Lee's ageing models (Yang and Lee, J. Cell. Plast., 39 , 59 (2003)) for extrusion foam products, were extended in terms of the fundamental aspects of mass and heat transport phenomena. Evaporation and condensation of blowing agents and heat conduction during the steam chest molding and ageing processes were modeled. The governing equations were established by integrating the mass transfer equations of steam and air at the intercellular walls with the constitutive equations of evaporation and condensation in each cell, the equation of heat conduction from the mold to the foam, and the mechanical force balance equation on the cell walls. The models simulate the stress exerted on the steaming chest mold and predict the expansion behavior of cells in the EPP bead‐foam board throughout the ageing process. A sensitivity analysis was also performed by the models to find the key factors which might allow the theoretical determination of the ejection time and shortening of the length of the ageing process. The distribution of nano-sized silica in binary rubber blends is characterized by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) tomography combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX). 3D distribution of silica is visualized by STEM-EDX tomography with the tilt-series of silicon elemental maps, while the phase-separated morphologies of polyisoprene rubber (IR) and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) are visualized by STEM-tomography in high-angle-annular-dark field (HAADF) mode. The combination of STEM-EDX and STEM-HAADF tomography enables us to determine the distribution of silica between the two rubber phases quantitatively even with high contents of silica up to 70 phr (weight parts per hundred rubber). It is found that silica is preferentially distributed in the SBR phase, but it is also distributed in the IR phase when the IR fraction in the total rubber components is higher than 40 wt%. The preferential distribution of silica in the SBR phase improves the dispersion of the IR domains. This is the first use of this technique for a multicomponent polymer system, showing the advantage to characterize the complicated multicomponent polymer composite morphologies. 相似文献

Prostaglandin F(2)(alpha) (PGF(2)(alpha)) released from the uterus causes alterations in luteal blood flow, reduces progesterone secretion, and induces luteolysis in the bovine corpus luteum (CL). We have recently discovered that luteal blood flow in the periphery of the mature CL acutely increases coincidently with pulsatile increases in a metabolite of PGF(2)(alpha) (PGFM). In this study, we characterized changes in regional luteal blood flow together with regional alterations in endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) expression during spontaneous luteolysis and in response to PGF(2)(alpha). Smooth muscle actin-positive blood vessels larger than 20 microm were observed mainly in the periphery of mature CL. PGF(2)(alpha) receptor was localized to luteal cells and large blood vessels in the periphery of mid-CL. PGF(2)(alpha) acutely stimulated eNOS expression in the periphery but not in the center of mature CL. Injection of the NO donor S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine into CL induced an acute increase in luteal blood flow and shortened the estrous cycle. In contrast, injection of the NOS inhibitor l-NAME into CL completely suppressed the acute increase in luteal blood flow induced by PGF(2)(alpha) and delayed the onset of luteolysis. In conclusion, PGF(2)(alpha) has a site-restricted action depending on not only luteal phase but also the region in the CL. PGF(2)(alpha) stimulates eNOS expression, vasodilation of blood vessels, and increased luteal blood flow in periphery of mature CL. Furthermore, the increased blood flow is mediated by NO, suggesting that the acute increase in peripheral blood flow to CL is one of the first physiological indicators of NO action in response to PGF(2)(alpha). 相似文献

A reliable representation of river terrains is essential to river research. Field surveys of river channel geometry are time‐consuming, costly, and logistically constrained and thus would encounter difficulties to achieve sufficient spatial coverage, resolution, and frequency of resurvey. This paper aims to demonstrate an efficient approach to building a river terrain model (RTM), the emphasis being on how to combine bathymetry and topography derived from satellite images captured at different flow stages. A method for calculating the difference between high and low stages (DHLS) based on the uniform‐flow theory is proposed. Calculations are carried out for a 13‐km long meandering section of the gravel‐bed Goulais River in Canada, which features pools and riffles, alternating point bars, and midchannel bars. A RTM for this complex section has been successfully produced. It consists of three data components: bathymetry at low stage, topography at high stage, and DHLS. The results capture realistic characteristics, including thalweg shift, steep outer banks, and gradual inner banks. They also show realistic longitudinal and lateral locations of pools and riffles. To illustrate potential applications of RTM, this paper has computed extreme bed shear stresses at bankfull discharge through hydrodynamics simulations of depth‐averaged flow in the river section and further estimated bed‐sediment grain‐size distributions. The estimates compare well with field measurements. The DHLS can vary significantly along a river channel. The proposed method for determining it is not site‐specific, and hence applicable to other rivers. The water gas shift (WGS) reaction over Pt and Pd catalysts supported on various perovskite oxides has been investigated at 573 K without catalyst pretreatment. The Pt and Pd catalysts on LaCoO3 support showed high catalytic activity. Interaction between Pt or Pd and the support is considered to promote the WGS reaction: Pt/LaCoO3 had high initial activity but deactivated immediately; Pd/LaCoO3 was less active than Pt/LaCoO3, but had superior stability. Catalysts were characterized using XRD, STEM, XPS, and H2-temperature programmed reduction (TPR). Results of this study showed that reduction of the support decreased the CO conversion on Pt/LaCoO3. On the other hand, Pd/LaCoO3 showed stable activity for the WGS reaction. Therefore, Pd was added to Pt/LaCoO3 for stabilizing the catalyst activity, and 0.5 wt.% Pd/1 wt.% Pt/LaCoO3 catalyst showed higher activity and stability. 相似文献
