In order to examine the relevance of alteration of gap-junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) to chemopreventive activity against carcinogenesis, the effects of alpha- and beta-carotene as well as lycopene, typical chemopreventive carotenoids, on cell coupling via gap junctions in rat liver in vivo were studied using a direct functional dye-transfer technique. We found that all three test compounds given at a dose of 50 mg/kg-body weight (b.w.) daily, 5 times by gavage, inhibited GJIC, while similar treatment with 5 mg/kg b.w. caused enhancement, especially in the beta-carotene- and lycopene-treated groups. At the dose level of 0.5 mg/kg b.w., the three compounds had no effect. The findings show that all three agents differentially modulate GJIC depending on the dose, with beneficial effects on cell communication only detected at the one dose. The result suggests that determination of the dose of chemicals to be used is crucial for human intervention studies. 相似文献

The production of extremely thick silicon carbide (SiC) has recently become possible with the advent of a specific chemical vapor deposition process. Ultra-precision machining of high-purity SiC has been performed by using a polycrystalline diamond (PCD) micromilling tool to investigate the machining characteristics. Results indicate that a high-quality surface (Ra = 1.7 nm) can be obtained when the removed chips are thin enough to achieve ductile mode machining. Micron-sized wells and groove structures with nanometer-scale surface roughness were successfully machined by using the PCD tool. In addition, a new electrochemically assisted surface reconditioning process has been proposed to remove the contaminant material adhered onto the PCD tool surfaces after prolonged machining. 相似文献

The structures of microphase‐separated films were investigated by transmission electron microscopy and small‐angle X‐ray scattering. Effect of applied processing history on flow instability at capillary extrusion is studied using a commercially available low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) having long‐chain branches. It is found that processing history in an internal mixer in a molten state depresses long‐time relaxation mechanism associated with long‐chain branches, which is known as “shear modification.” Consequently, the onset of output rate for melt fracture increases greatly. Furthermore, it should be noted that the sample having intense shear history shows shark‐skin failure without volumetric distortion, although it has been believed that LDPE exhibits gross melt fracture at capillary extrusion. The reduction of elongational viscosity by the alignment of long‐chain branches along to the main chain is responsible for the anomalous rheological response. As a result, the sample shows shark‐skin failure like a linear polyethylene at a lower output rate than the critical one for gross melt fracture. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. the early reaction time, the degrees of dechlorination for DEG, TEG, and n-C10H21OH were notably higher than that for EG. Further, the high compatibility between PVC and the solvents was considered to result
in the easy penetration of the solvent and OH− into PVC particles, leading to the acceleration of dechlorination in the early reaction stage. An improvement of the dechlorination

DNA electronic devices were prepared on silicon-based three-terminal electrodes. Both ends of DNA molecules (400 bp long, mixed sequences) were bridged via chemical bonds between the source-drain nanogap (120 nm) electrodes. S-Shaped I-V curves were obtained and the electric current can be modulated by the gate voltage. The DNA molecules act as semiconducting p-type nanowires in the three-terminal device. 相似文献

The histogenesis of 3 types of rat renal cell tumors (basophilic cell, clear cell, and oncocytic) was stereologically analyzed, with particular attention paid to transitions from normal tubules. Early nitrosamine-induced preneoplastic lesions, including dysplastic tubules (altered tubules), epithelial hyperplasias, and small adenomas, were reconstructed using serially sectioned specimens processed for carbonic anhydrase type II (CA) and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) (CA-PAS) double staining to allow easier distinction of the nephron segments: Proximal tubules had a PAS-positive brush border and were weakly positive for CA in the cytoplasm; distal tubules were PAS negative and weakly positive for CA; collecting ducts were PAS negative and strongly positive for CA. Similarly, cytochrome c oxidase (CytOx) and CytOx-PAS double staining was also applied to confirm the character of oncocytic lesions. All basophilic lesions (7 of 7) showed transition to proximal tubules. Clear cell lesions positive for CA, on the other hand, showed transition to distal tubules in 4 of 9 (44.4%) lesions and to collecting ducts in 4 of 9 (44.4%) lesions, but in only 1 of 9 (11%) to a proximal tubule. All oncocytic lesions (16 of 16), characterized by positivity for both CA and CytOx, showed transition to collecting ducts. The results indicate that the origins of renal cell neoplasia are proximal tubules for the basophilic cell lesions, either proximal or distal tubules for their clear cell counterparts, and collecting ducts for oncocytic lesions. 相似文献

Modeling the curving motion of humans in actual environment is rarely done because of the complexity and variability of the turning motion. In this study, various gait motions, including straight, round corner, and circular walks, were recorded and analyzed using factor analysis. As a result, we successfully extracted several factors that represent turning motions, such as long stride motion, turning motion led by the inner leg, and turning motion led by the outer leg. In particular, we found that the natural curving motion, which is a motion that results when turning around a round corner, is widely and continuously distributed on the factor space. Although several typical stepping strategies were reported by related studies, we found that the stepping motion changes between straight and turning gaits in the factor space during natural curving motions. Thus, the classification of curving motion into several typical distinct stepping patterns is probably insufficient to understand the natural curving motion. Furthermore, natural curving motions that comprise circular curving motions that were believed to represent typical curving motions was not validated. On the other hand, this result also suggests the possibility of generating curving motions for a physical assistant robot by combining straight gait and circler curving motion. 相似文献
