This paper presents the results of a study on the electrokinetic treatment of kaolinite and humic acid kaolinite complexes spiked with 2,6-dichlorophenol or 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (diuron). In particular, the attention was paid to the interaction between solid surface and dissolved organics: the effects of contaminant sorption as well as the physicochemical reactions on the efficiency of electrokinetic remediation were investigated. Using a 3V/cm voltage gradient, approximately 90% of diuron was removed from kaolinite after one water pore volume was collected in the cathode reservoir, but much lower efficiency was obtained in the electrokinetic removal of this compound from humic acid-coated kaolinite. The results also showed that partial degradation of the contaminant occurred during electrokinetic treatment of kaolinite clay spiked with 2,6-dichlorophenol: the contamination in the clay could be remediated by the combination of electrokinetic extraction and electrochemical reactions. 相似文献

All-optical Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) backbones are believed to be a fundamental component in future high speed networks. Currently, the most pursued approach for Wide Area Networks (WANs) is wavelength routing, in which communication circuits are established between node pairs by means of lightpaths (paths of light) spanning one or more fiber-optic links. This approach has, however, two drawbacks. Since the number of wavelengths and links in a network is finite, not all node pairs can be connected via a dedicated lightpath directly. Consequently, some node pairs will communicate using a concatenation of lightpaths, which requires electronic switching of in transit information, loosing the advantages of optical transparency. Secondly, typically some form of (electronic) traffic grooming will be necessary to make efficient use of the fixed lightpath capacity. This paper proposes to design all-optical WANs using a novel approach, called photonic slot routing. With photonic slot routing, entire slots, each carrying multiple packets on distinct wavelengths, are switched transparently and individually, using available fast and wavelength non-sensitive devices. The advantage of using photonic slot routing is threefold. All node pairs in the network communicate all-optically. Traffic aggregation necessary to efficiently use the capacity of the wavelength channels is optically achieved. The solution is practical as it is based on proven optical technologies. In addition, through the use of wavelength non-sensitive devices the proposed WAN design yields intrinsic scalability in the number of wavelengths. 相似文献

Nanoscale capacitance imaging with attofarad resolution (~1?aF) of a nano-structured oxide thin film, using ac current sensing atomic force microscopy, is reported. Capacitance images are shown to follow the topographic profile of the oxide closely, with nanometre vertical resolution. A comparison between experimental data and theoretical models shows that the capacitance variations observed in the measurements can be mainly associated with the capacitance probed by the tip apex and not with positional changes of stray capacitance contributions. Capacitance versus distance measurements further support this conclusion. The application of this technique to the characterization of samples with non-voltage-dependent capacitance, such as very thin dielectric films, self-assembled monolayers and biological membranes, can provide new insight into the dielectric properties at the nanoscale. 相似文献

We present a systematic analysis of the effects that the microscopic parts of electrostatic force microscopy probes (the cone and cantilever) have on the electrostatic interaction between the tip apex and thick insulating substrates (thickness > 100 μm). We discuss how these effects can influence the measurement and quantification of the local dielectric constant of the substrates. We propose and experimentally validate a general methodology that takes into account the influence of the cone and the cantilever, thus enabling us to obtain very accurate values of the dielectric constants of thick insulators. 相似文献

Label-free detection of the material composition of nanoparticles could be enabled by the quantification of the nanoparticles' inherent dielectric response to an applied electric field. However, the sensitivity of dielectric nanoscale objects to geometric and non-local effects makes the dielectric response extremely weak. Here we show that electrostatic force microscopy with sub-piconewton resolution can resolve the dielectric constants of single dielectric nanoparticles without the need for any reference material, as well as distinguish nanoparticles that have an identical surface but different inner composition. We unambiguously identified unlabelled ~10 nm nanoparticles of similar morphology but different low-polarizable materials, and discriminated empty from DNA-containing virus capsids. The impregnation of Ketjen Black (C) with iron and cobalt phthalocyanines (MPc) taken one by one or as a 1:1 stoichiometric mixture, followed by heat treatment at 600 °C under inert atmosphere, gave materials containing arrays of single metal ions coordinated by four nitrogen atoms (M-N4 units). Increasing the pyrolysis temperature to 800° resulted in the formation of carbon-supported, nanosized metal particles. A key role of the carbon support in determining the material structure at either temperature investigated was demonstrated by TPD, EXAFS, XANES and XRPD studies. These also showed that a Fe-Co alloy is obtained at 800 °C when the impregnation of Ketjen Black involves a mixture of FePc and CoPc. Electrodes coated with the different Fe, Co and Fe-Co materials, containing ca. 3 wt% metal loadings, were scrutinized for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline media by linear sweep voltammetry. For comparative purposes, two Pt electrocatalysts containing 3 and 20 wt% metal were investigated. The electrochemical activity of all materials was analyzed by Tafel and Koutecky-Levich plots as well as chronopotentiometry. The Fe-containing electrocatalysts have been found to be highly active for the ORR in alkaline media with convective limiting currents as high as 600 A g Fe−1 at room temperature and onset potentials as high as 1.02 V vs. RHE. It has been found that (i) the ORR mass activity of the Pc-derived electrocatalysts is superior to that of the Pt catalysts investigated; (ii) the activity of FePc and FePc-CoPc/C, heat treated at either 600 or 800 °C, is superior to that of the corresponding Co materials; (iii) the electrocatalysts obtained at 600 °C are fairly more active than those obtained at 800 °C. 相似文献
