Five anion exchange resins, including a magnetic ion exchange (MIEX) resin, were evaluated for removal of Suwannee River Fulvic Acid (SRFA) in the presence of bicarbonate and chloride. The charge density of SRFA, obtained by potentiometric titration, was used to perform charge balances for ion exchange reactions involving SRFA, bicarbonate, and chloride under different solution conditions. The results clearly show the equivalence of SRFA uptake and chloride release by ion exchange. Although the structure of the anion exchange resins did not affect the stoichiometry of the reaction, the polyacrylic resins did exhibit greater removal of SRFA than the polystyrene resins. The hindered removal of SRFA by the polystyrene resins was hypothesized to be a result of size exclusion. The MIEX resin, which has a polyacrylic structure, performed similarly to the other polyacrylic resins. For the MIEX resin, the separation factor for SRFA over chloride was approximately 8 times greater than for bicarbonate over chloride. This work provides an improved understanding of the interactions between natural organic matter (NOM), inorganic anions, and anion exchange resins, and should result in more effective applications of ion exchange for the removal of NOM in the treatment of drinking water. 相似文献

Factors influencing the formation and relative distribution of haloacetic acids and trihalomethanes in drinking water 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Various water quality and treatment characteristics were evaluated under controlled chlorination conditions to determine their influences on the formation and distribution of nine haloacetic acids and four trihalomethanes in drinking water. Raw waters were sampled from five water utilities and were coagulated with alum and fractionated with XAD-8 resin. The resulting four fractions--raw and coagulated water and the hydrophobic and hydrophilic extracts--were then chlorinated at pH 6 and 8 and held at 20 degrees C for various contact times. The results show that increasing pH from 6 to 8 increased trihalomethane formation but decreased trihaloacetic acid formation, with little effect on dihaloacetic acid formation. More trihalomethanes were formed than haloacetic acids at pH 8, while the reverse was true at pH 6. Hydrophobic fractions always gave higher haloacetic acid and trihalomethane formation potentials than their corresponding hydrophilic fractions, but hydrophilic carbon also played an important role in disinfection byproduct formation for waters with low humic content. The bromine-containing species comprised a higher molar proportion of the trihalomethanes than of the haloacetic acids. The hydrophilic fractions were more reactive with bromine than their corresponding hydrophobic fractions. Coagulation generally removed more haloacetic acid precursors than trihalomethane precursors. Waters with higher specific ultraviolet absorbance values were more amenable to removal of organic material by coagulation than waters with low specific ultraviolet absorbance values. This paper presents pollutant concentrations and performance data for code-required mechanical ventilation equipment in 23 low-income apartments at 4 properties constructed or renovated 2013-2017. All apartments had natural gas cooking burners. Occupants pledged to not use windows for ventilation during the study but several did. Measured airflows of range hoods and bathroom exhaust fans were lower than product specifications. Only eight apartments operationally met all ventilation code requirements. Pollutants measured over one week in each apartment included time-resolved fine particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), formaldehyde and carbon dioxide (CO2) and time-integrated formaldehyde, NO2 and nitrogen oxides (NOX). Compared to a recent study of California houses with code-compliant ventilation, apartments were smaller, had fewer occupants, higher densities, and higher mechanical ventilation rates. Mean PM2.5, formaldehyde, NO2, and CO2 were 7.7 µg/m3, 14.1, 18.8, and 741 ppm in apartments; these are 4% lower, 25% lower, 165% higher, and 18% higher compared to houses with similar cooking frequency. Four apartments had weekly PM2.5 above the California annual outdoor standard of 12 µg/m3 and also discrete days above the World Health Organization 24-hour guideline of 25 µg/m3.
