Introduction

This study investigated the modality, type and duration of contact lens wear as well as compliance and hygiene related issues (hand and case hygiene, use of tap water, dozing and overnight wear) in the UK and Germany. Questionnaires were collected anonymously from 417 UK and 767 German patients attending optometric practices for contact lens appointments. It is the seventh of a series of contact lens wearer profiles conducted since 2000.

Results

The proportion of rigid gas permeable lenses worn was significantly higher at 55.4% in Germany, compared to 16.1% in the UK. Overall, a significantly larger proportion of German participants used tap water to rinse their lenses and cases (P < 0.001). Also, German respondents changed their lens cases less frequently (p < 0.001). Fewer UK than German respondents stated they washed their hands before lens insertion (p = 0.009), removal (p = 0.01), before eating (p < 0.001). German participants were less likely to wash their hands before preparing food (p = 0.042) and after using the toilet (p = 0.002). The two sample groups differed significantly regarding the care regimens they used for their CLs (p < 0.001).

Conclusion

The differences between Germany and the UK highlighted in this study were caused by differences in legal regulations, plumbing and practitioners’ guidance. Although many of the questions relating to hygiene differed statistically between the two participating sample groups, the absolute differences in figures were not considered to be large.  相似文献

Alginate is a linear polysaccharide that is abundant in algal biomass. A novel recombinant exolytic oligoalginate lyase from a marine bacterium, Sphingomonas sp. MJ-3, was used for the saccharification of alginate into alginate monosaccharides in order to use alginate monosaccharides as renewable carbon source. The optimal heterologous expression condition for the MJ-3 oligoalginate lyase was determined, and the effects of saccharification reaction conditions were evaluated. Unsaturated monosaccharides up to 3.3 mg/ml were successfully prepared from 1% (w/v) alginate by using the recombinant oligoalginate lyase of Sphingomonas sp. MJ-3.  相似文献

An enzyme catalysing the essential dephosphorylation of the riboflavin precursor, 5‐amino‐6‐ribitylamino‐2,4(1H,3H)‐pyrimidinedione 5′‐phosphate ( 6 ), was purified about 800‐fold from a riboflavin‐producing Bacillus subtilis strain, and was assigned as the translation product of the ycsE gene by mass spectrometry. YcsE is a member of the large haloacid dehalogenase (HAD) superfamily. The recombinant protein was expressed in Escherichia coli. It catalyses the hydrolysis of 6 (vmax, 12 μmol mg?1 min?1; KM, 54 μm ) and of FMN (vmax, 25 μmol mg?1 min?1; KM, 135 μm ). A ycsE deletion mutant of B. subtilis was not riboflavin dependent. Two additional proteins (YwtE, YitU) that catalyse the hydrolysis of 6 at appreciable rates were identified by screening 13 putative HAD superfamily members from B. subtilis. The evolutionary processes that have resulted in the handling of an essential step in the biosynthesis of an essential cofactor by a consortium of promiscuous enzymes require further analysis.  相似文献

The socio-economic and ecological impacts of selected projects of the BMBF funding program “r4 – Innovative Technologies for Resource Efficiency – Research for the Provision of Raw Materials of Strategic Economic Importance” are presented. Many, but not all, research projects indicate a potential improvement of the supply situation in Germany. In some cases, the provision of secondary raw materials is unprofitable or ecologically detrimental. Carbonic anhydrase (CA) is an attractive biodegradable catalyst for CO2 absorption in solvent-based CO2 capture. However, maintaining the stability of CA as a homogeneous component of the solvents is a challenge. Solvent regeneration temperature typically exceeds the enzyme thermal tolerance, which leads to CA deactivation. To reduce the need for frequent CA replenishment and to avoid inactive CA accumulation in the solvent, this work shows the benefits of an immobilization strategy where CA is fixed in a second-generation design of textile structured packing (CATSP-2) modules. The enzyme-immobilized packing showed 1.5 times better performance in CO2 separation compared with traditional structured packing with a corresponding increased CO2 loading in the rich solvent. The modules exhibited good CA activity retention of ~80% during the tests without any CA replenishment. Applying CATSP-2 could potentially decrease the packing height and absorber column size for a lower cost per amount of CO2 captured.  相似文献

Herein, we report the formation of α‐amylase containing polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs). The method for the encapsulation of α‐amylase is based on interactions between two oppositely charged polyelectrolytes, poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and polyethylenimine (PEI). We could show that electrostatic interactions ensure the incorporation of the enzyme into the formed polyelectrolyte complexes. The encapsulation has no negative effect on enzyme activity and protects against denaturation of the enzyme initiated by low pH values. The resulting PECs are 150–250 nm in size with narrow size distribution, appear in a spherical shape and are colloidally stable. The complexation of both polyelectrolytes and the immobilization of α‐amylase are investigated using fractionating techniques mainly the analytical ultracentrifugation and asymmetrical‐flow field‐flow fractionation. The formation of PECs represents a simple method for the encapsulation of α‐amylase without the use of organic solvents and requires no additional purifications steps. This one‐step approach, yielding high encapsulation efficiencies, shows the potential as a drug delivery system for sensitive hydrophilic actives in future. α‐amylase is immobilized in polyelectrolyte complexes made of polyethylenimine and poly(acrylic acid). Optimized encapsulation conditions and the resulting polyelectrolyte complexes are investigated via determination of IEP, α‐amylase activity assays, nanoDSC measurements, zeta potential values, dynamic light scattering, microscopy, and fractionating techniques. Organic carbon occluded in diatom silica is assumed to be protected from degradation in the sediment. δ13C from diatom carbon (δ13C(diatom)) therefore potentially provides a signal of conditions during diatom growth. However, there have been few studies based on δ13C(diatom). Numerous variables can influence δ13C of organic matter in the marine environment (e.g., salinity, light, nutrient and CO2 availability). Here we compare δ13C(diatom) and δ13C(TOC) from three sediment records from individual marine inlets (Rauer Group, East Antarctica) to (i) investigate deviations between δ13C(diatom) and δ13C(TOC), to (ii) identify biological and environmental controls on δ13C(diatom) and δ13C(TOC), and to (iii) discuss δ13C(diatom) as a proxy for environmental and climate reconstructions. The records show individual δ13C(diatom) and δ13C(TOC) characteristics, which indicates that δ13C is not primarily controlled by regional climate or atmospheric CO2 concentration. Since the inlets vary in water depths offsets in δ13C are probably related to differences in water column stratification and mixing, which influences redistribution of nutrients and carbon within each inlet. In our dataset changes in δ13C(diatom) and δ13C(TOC) could not unequivocally be ascribed to changes in diatom species composition, either because the variation in δ13C(diatom) between the observed species is too small or because other environmental controls are more dominant. Records from the Southern Ocean show depleted δ13C(diatom) values (1–4 ‰) during glacial times compared to the Holocene. Although climate variability throughout the Holocene is low compared to glacial/interglacial variability, we find variability in δ13C(diatom), which is in the same order of magnitude. δ13C of organic matter produced in the costal marine environment seems to be much more sensitive to environmental changes than open ocean sites and δ13C is of strongly local nature.  相似文献

Bacteria respond to different small molecules that are produced by other neighboring bacteria. These molecules, called autoinducers, are classified as intraspecies (i.e., molecules produced and perceived by the same bacterial species) or interspecies (molecules that are produced and sensed between different bacterial species). AI-2 has been proposed as an interspecies autoinducer and has been shown to regulate different bacterial physiology as well as affect virulence factor production and biofilm formation in some bacteria, including bacteria of clinical relevance. Several groups have embarked on the development of small molecules that could be used to perturb AI-2 signaling in bacteria, with the ultimate goal that these molecules could be used to inhibit bacterial virulence and biofilm formation. Additionally, these molecules have the potential to be used in synthetic biology applications whereby these small molecules are used as inputs to switch on and off AI-2 receptors. In this review, we highlight the state-of-the-art in the development of small molecules that perturb AI-2 signaling in bacteria and offer our perspective on the future development and applications of these classes of molecules.  相似文献

We demonstrate the use of innovative wetting method in prediction of the adhesion properties of biobased polymers for two‐component injection moulding, taking into account the acid–base surface properties of joined materials. The measurements were carried out in accordance with modified Berger method by calculation of the difference in shortened acidity parameter ΔDshort between hard and soft component. Correlation factors up to 0.99 were observed between ΔDshort and peel force. In comparison to results obtained by conventional wetting methods, high potential for the selection of components with high interface adhesion and for prediction of the functionality by the acid–base approach was demonstrated. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
