Coagulation of aqueous alumina slurries prepared using various concentrations (0.43–1.04 wt% based on alumina) of ammonium poly(acrylate) dispersant by MgO has been studied for direct coagulation casting (DCC) of alumina. The slurries prepared at dispersant concentration below 0.84 wt% are not suitable for DCC at room temperature (∼30 ° C) as they undergo premature coagulation. Mixing the slurry with MgO at a low temperature of nearly 5 ° C slows down the reactions leading to coagulation and keeps the slurry viscosity low for a sufficient period of time. Coagulation of slurries prepared at a dispersant concentration of 0.92 wt% and above at room temperature requires MgO concentrations much higher than the equivalent amount required for reaction with the dispersant. This anomalous behavior at higher dispersant concentration is explained such that the Mg-poly(acrylate) formed by the reaction between ammonium poly(acrylate) and MgO formed a sheath over the remaining MgO particles and prevented them from further dissolution at room temperature. Faster coagulation could be achieved by heating the slurries after casting in closed molds. The Mg-poly(acrylate) acts as a binder and stabilizes the coagulated bodies as their strength and stability against oscillatory stresses increase with an increase in dispersant concentration.  相似文献

Biomodel is a product of rapid prototyping process that represents a new approach for surgical planning and simulation. Biomodels were found to be particularly effective to locate an exact defect with good measurement accuracy and without any risk to the patients' health. These models could provide surgeons a realistic impression of complex structures before surgical intervention, allowing a define diagnosis and a precise preoperative simulation of skeleton modifying interventions.This work reports on the application of innovative 3-D biomodelling technology in the maxillofacial reconstruction. This technology allows for the calculation of the exact contours, angulations, length and general morphology of iliac crest and fibula flaps for maxillofacial reconstruction in a total of 28 clinical cases. Clinical results have shown that by using this technique, much better facial symmetry and improved functionality were achieved after surgery, which resulted in enormous benefits for treated patients.  相似文献

We show that active, self-propelled particles that are connected together to form a single chain that is anchored at one end can produce the graceful beating motions of flagella. Changing the boundary condition from a clamp to a pivot at the anchor leads to steadily rotating tight coils. Strong noise in the system disrupts the regularity of the oscillations. We use a combination of detailed numerical simulations, mean-field scaling analysis and first passage time theory to characterize the phase diagram as a function of the filament length, passive elasticity, propulsion force and noise. Our study suggests minimal experimental tests for the onset of oscillations in an active polar chain.  相似文献

Collagen is the oldest and most abundant extracellular matrix protein that has found many applications in food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and biomedical industries. First, an overview of the family of collagens and their respective structures, conformation, and biosynthesis is provided. The advances and shortfalls of various collagen preparations (e.g., mammalian/marine extracted collagen, cell‐produced collagens, recombinant collagens, and collagen‐like peptides) and crosslinking technologies (e.g., chemical, physical, and biological) are then critically discussed. Subsequently, an array of structural, thermal, mechanical, biochemical, and biological assays is examined, which are developed to analyze and characterize collagenous structures. Lastly, a comprehensive review is provided on how advances in engineering, chemistry, and biology have enabled the development of bioactive, 3D structures (e.g., tissue grafts, biomaterials, cell‐assembled tissue equivalents) that closely imitate native supramolecular assemblies and have the capacity to deliver in a localized and sustained manner viable cell populations and/or bioactive/therapeutic molecules. Clearly, collagens have a long history in both evolution and biotechnology and continue to offer both challenges and exciting opportunities in regenerative medicine as nature's biomaterial of choice.  相似文献

This paper considers a general learning problem akin to the field of learning automata (LA) in which the learning mechanism attempts to learn from a stochastic teacher or a stochastic compulsive liar. More specifically, unlike the traditional LA model in which LA attempts to learn the optimal action offered by the Environment (also here called the "Oracle"), this paper considers the problem of the learning mechanism (robot, an LA, or in general, an algorithm) attempting to learn a "parameter" within a closed interval. The problem is modeled as follows: The learning mechanism is trying to locate an unknown point on a real interval by interacting with a stochastic Environment through a series of informed guesses. For each guess, the Environment essentially informs the mechanism, possibly erroneously (i.e., with probability p), which way it should move to reach the unknown point. When the probability of a correct response is p > 0.5, the Environment is said to be informative, and thus the case of learning from a stochastic teacher. When this probability p < 0.5, the Environment is deemed deceptive, and is called a stochastic compulsive liar. This paper describes a novel learning strategy by which the unknown parameter can be learned in both environments. These results are the first reported results, which are applicable to the latter scenario. The most significant contribution of this paper is that the proposed scheme is shown to operate equally well, even when the learning mechanism is unaware of whether the Environment ("Oracle") is informative or deceptive. The learning strategy proposed herein, called CPL-AdS, partitions the search interval into d subintervals, evaluates the location of the unknown point with respect to these subintervals using fast-converging E-optimal LRI LA, and prunes the search space in each iteration by eliminating at least one partition. The CPL-AdS algorithm is shown to provably converge to the unknown point with an arbitrary degree of accuracy with probability as close to unity as desired. Comprehensive experimental results confirm the fast and accurate convergence of the search for a wide range of values for the Environment's feedback accuracy parameter p, and thus has numerous potential applications.  相似文献

We report progress on the NL versus UL problem.
  • We show that counting the number of s-t paths in graphs where the number of s-v paths for any v is bounded by a polynomial can be done in FUL: the unambiguous log-space function class. Several new upper bounds follow from this including ${{{ReachFewL} \subseteq {UL}}}$ and ${{{LFew} \subseteq {UL}^{FewL}}}$
  • We investigate the complexity of min-uniqueness—a central notion in studying the NL versus UL problem. In this regard we revisit the class OptL[log n] and introduce UOptL[log n], an unambiguous version of OptL[log n]. We investigate the relation between UOptL[log n] and other existing complexity classes.
  • We consider the unambiguous hierarchies over UL and UOptL[log n]. We show that the hierarchy over UOptL[log n] collapses. This implies that ${{{ULH} \subseteq {L}^{{promiseUL}}}}$ thus collapsing the UL hierarchy.
  • We show that the reachability problem over graphs embedded on 3 pages is complete for NL. This contrasts with the reachability problem over graphs embedded on 2 pages, which is log-space equivalent to the reachability problem in planar graphs and hence is in UL.

    Al2O3–ZrO2 composites having nominal equal volume fraction of Al2O3 and ZrO2 were prepared from gel-precipitated powder, precipitated powder and washed precipitated powder. These different processing routes affected the crystallization temperature of the amorphous powder as well as the phase evolution of Al2O3 and ZrO2 during calcination. The agglomerate size was largest for gel-precipitated powder (30 μm) and it was smallest for washed precipitated powder (19 μm). While gel-precipitated powder produce hard agglomerated powder (Pj = 110 MPa), washed precipitated powder produce soft agglomerates with low agglomeration strength (Pj = 70 MPa). Thus, washed precipitated powder could sinter to a high density at lower sintering temperature. The bending strength exhibits a semi logarithmic relationship with porosity. The hardness shows an increasing trend with sintering temperature.  相似文献

    Coagulation of concentrated aqueous alumina slurries prepared using an ammonium poly(acrylate) dispersant by MgO has been studied for direct coagulation casting (DCC). A small amount of MgO (0.2 wt% of alumina) increased the viscosity of the concentrated alumina slurry with time and finally transformed it into a stiff gel. The mechanism of coagulation is proposed such that the time-delayed in situ generation of Mg2+ ions from the sparingly soluble MgO forms Mg–poly(acrylate) with the unadsorbed ammonium poly(acrylate) molecules in solution that shift the poly(acrylate) adsorption equilibrium toward the left by depleting the poly(acrylate) molecules adsorbed on the alumina particle surface. This leads to insufficient dispersant coverage on the particle surface and coagulation of the slurry. DCC using MgO is possible only if the slurry is prepared at a dispersant concentration higher than that required for optimum dispersion as the slurries prepared at the optimum dispersant concentration underwent premature coagulation. The gelation time could be tailored within 20 min to a few hours by maintaining the temperature in the range of 70°–30°C. The wet coagulated bodies prepared from 50 vol% alumina slurry showed a compressive strength of nearly 0.05 MPa.  相似文献

    Curing preservation of fish is the most popular method in the developing countries and India is no exception. Different film-forming gums, namely sodium alginate, tamarind kernel powder, guar gum and agar agar were tried to find their effect in preservation of salted and dried mackerel and in extending the shelf-life of these products. Various biochemical, microbiological and organoleptic parameters were recorded during the storage period. The treatment of salted dried fish with gum solutions and subsequent formation of film upon drying was found to be the best in preserving the quality of salted fish. The effect of film forming gums on the shelf-life of the products was found to be highly significant ( P< 0·05) as compared to the control.  相似文献

    Abnormalities of the microfibrillar protein fibrillin (Fib) have been reported in Marfan syndrome (MFS). The so-called neonatal Marfan syndrome (nMFS) is a lethal phenotype displaying features that are not seen in classical MFS. We have therefore studied the biosynthesis and extracellular deposition of Fib and decorin in fibroblasts from a patient with nMFS and controls. Immunofluorescence of the patient's cell cultures showed an almost complete absence of Fib and a marked reduction of decorin in the extracellular matrix (ECM). The nMFS skin revealed Fib on subbasal microfibrillar bundles in the papillary dermis, and Fib associated with elastic fibers in the reticular dermis; the bundles and fibers were fragmented and thinner than normal. Pulse-chase labeling of cells with [35S]Met/Cys revealed moderately reduced secretion, but a diminished deposition of Fib in the ECM; this was more apparent at a longer chase time. Fib mRNA and synthesis appeared to be normal, whereas both decorin mRNA and biosynthesis were reduced. We therefore assume a structural Fib defect in this patient causing reduced deposition into and/or enhanced removal from the ECM, whereas the reduced decorin biosynthesis may be a secondary regulatory phenomenon. The clinical relevance of this remains unclear. Our findings imply that Fib defects may be responsible for the severe, complex phenotype of nMFS.  相似文献
