Microfauna community structure was examined in the mixed liquor of a bench-scale bioreactor equipped with an intermittent aeration and feeding system. The reactor was operated under an intermittent aeration of 25 min in every 1 h and varying feeding conditions (0.264, 0.403 and 0.773 kg BOD(5)/m(3) d). A total of 14 protozoan and metazoan taxa were identified by microscopic examination. Sessile ciliates, followed by crawling ciliates, were the major protozoan groups under 0.403 kg BOD(5)/m(3) d organic loading conditions, while sessile ciliate population was remarkably increased under an organic loading of 0.773 kg BOD(5)/m(3) d. Principal Component Analysis and Pearson correlation coefficient tests were performed in order to reveal relationships between microfauna community and operational parameters. Ciliophora specific-18S rRNA gene clone library was constructed to identify ciliate diversity under 0.773 kg BOD(5)/m(3) d organic loading conditions. Ciliophora diversity consisted of members of Aspidiscidae, Epistylidae, Opisthonectidae and Vorticellidae, with the majority of the clones being associated with the species Vorticella fusca. At least one novel phylogenetic linkage among Ciliophora was identified. Comparisons made after molecular characterization and microscopic examination of Ciliophora community showed that the estimation of broad ciliate groups is useful for ecological considerations and evaluation of the operational conditions in wastewater treatment plants.  相似文献

Introduction

Anti-vehicle (AV) mines have been laid indiscriminately in conflict areas for the past 100 years. With an indeterminate life-span they continue to pose a significant threat to the civilian population, as well as restrict the movement of people, aid and goods to vulnerable populations. The aim of this study was to analyse unique casualty data from 2212 mine incidents to determine if simple vehicle modifications can reduce fatality and injury rates from mine explosions.

Method

We analysed casualty data from the Rhodesian War (1972–1980), to assess the effects of basic vehicle modifications (V-shaped hull, increased ground clearance, widened axles, heavy vehicles and blast deflectors) on injury rates. A multinomial regression statistical model was developed for vehicle modifications and number of alterations to explore these effects.

Results

Incident data was available on 2212 vehicle mine incidents involving 16,456 people. The overall fatality rate was 3.3% (544/16,456) and the overall injury rate was 22.7% (3741/16,456). Explosions against mine-protected vehicles resulted in a fatality rate of 1.2% (150/12,919); occupants in unprotected vehicles sustained a fatality rate of 11.4% (395/3537). The injury rate in mine protected vehicles was 22.2% (2868/12,919) compared to 24.7% in unprotected vehicles (873/3537).Utilising a multinomial logistical-regression model, we show that each design feature significantly reduced fatality rate (from 45% in unprotected vehicles to 0.8% in protected vehicles); each of these designs had a cumulative effect in fatality reduction. In isolation, blast deflectors, whilst reducing fatality rates, increased injury rates.

Conclusions

Our data clearly demonstrates that simple vehicle modifications can have a significant effect on reducing fatality and injury rates from AV mine explosions. Given that the modifications described were produced using commercially available vehicles with basic engineering requirements, we believe that similar processes could be employed in post-conflict environments in a cost-effective manner.  相似文献

Poly(p‐phenylene) (H‐PPP), which is one of the firstly investigated conducting polymer, has the disadvantage of difficult processability because it is infusible and insoluble. The use of biphenyl instead of benzene leads to ortho‐, meta‐, para‐polyphenylenes (H‐PP) which are more soluble and easier to be processed, however their electrical conductivity is lower. Copolymers of polyphenylenes (C1 and C2) and corresponding homopolymers (H‐PPP and H‐PP) were produced by the oxidative cationic polymerization of benzene and/or biphenyl. The soluble (‐S) and the insoluble (‐I) in chlorobenzene polyphenylenes were separated (H‐PP‐I, H‐PP‐S, C1‐I, C1‐S, C2‐I, and C2‐S) and they were doped with a solution of FeCl3. All polyphenylenes were studied by FTIR, XRD, TGA, and their electrical conductivity with constant current was determined. Pronounced differences between the copolymers and the homopolymers were observed, indicating the different structure of the former. The values of the electrical conductivity of doped insoluble copolymers (10?4 and 10?5 S/cm) are between that of H‐PPP (10?3 S/cm) and H‐PP‐I (10?6 S/cm). The values of the electrical conductivity of doped soluble copolymers (10?5 S/cm) are considerably higher than that of H‐PP‐S (10?9 S/cm). The new electrically conductive polyphenylenes that were produced differ significantly from the corresponding homopolymers and combine good electrical conductivity and solubility. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Herein, we report a novel whole-cell screening assay using Lactobacillus casei as a model microorganism to identify inhibitors of energy-coupling factor (ECF) transporters. This promising and underexplored target may have important pharmacological potential through modulation of vitamin homeostasis in bacteria and, importantly, it is absent in humans. The assay represents an alternative, cost-effective and fast solution to demonstrate the direct involvement of these membrane transporters in a native biological environment rather than using a low-throughput in vitro assay employing reconstituted proteins in a membrane bilayer system. Based on this new whole-cell screening approach, we demonstrated the optimization of a weak hit compound (2) into a small molecule (3) with improved in vitro and whole-cell activities. This study opens the possibility to quickly identify novel inhibitors of ECF transporters and optimize them based on structure–activity relationships.  相似文献

Copolymer films of biphenyl and pyrrole were synthesized by electrochemical polymerization. The influence of the applied potential used for the electropolymerization on the structure, morphology, electrical conductivity, and stability of the films was examined. From the analysis of the current–time curves, it was found that the growth of the copolymer films starts immediately. The films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, and scanning electron microscopy–energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, and their electrical conductivity (σ), energy gap (Eg), and electrochemical stability were also determined. Based on the results, the copolymers were classified into three groups. The first includes the (PP-PPy)0.80 copolymer synthesized at the lowest potential Eox (0.80 V), having the highest ratio R (R = 0.35) of quinoid to benzenoid rings (calculated from FTIR), the highest value of σ (σ = 0.9 S/cm), the lowest Eg (Eg = 1.20 eV), and has compact morphology. The second group concerns the copolymers synthesized at higher potential (0.82 up to 0.86 V), having lower R (∼ 0.20), lower σ (below 0.4 S/cm), higher Eg (∼ 1.35 eV), and they are less compact with many pores. The third group includes the copolymers synthesized at even higher applied potential (0.88 and 0.90 V), having even lower R values (∼ 0.10), significantly lower σ (∼ 10−3 S/cm), even higher Eg (∼ 1.70 eV), and they are very porous. The applied potential during electropolymerization strongly affects the properties of the synthesized copolymers. Because of the combination of high conductivity, low energy gap, and partial solubility with significant electrochemical stability, these new copolymers are attractive candidates for many applications. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The aim of this study was to construct control charts for the data that were obtained from the daily toxicological analysis of finished water (that is the water which has already been treated for human consumption) from the treated-water tanks of the Water Supply & Sewerage Corporation of Athens. The basic idea of the control charts is to test the hypothesis that there are only common causes of variability versus the alternative that there are special causes. The control charts are designed and evaluated under the assumption that the observations from the process are independent and identically distributed (iid) normally. However, the independence assumption is often violated in practice. Time or serial dependence (autocorrelation) may be present in many chemical procedures, and may have a significant effect on the properties of the control charts. The fact that a serious amount of autocorrelation was present in the data for the toxicity of the fished water had a serious impact on the typical control charts. The problem of the autocorrelation was overcome by the usage of a more sophisticated method based on time-series ARIMA models.  相似文献
