A two-phase model based on the double-diffusive approach is used to perform a numerical study of natural convection of alumina-water nanofluids in differentially heated vertical slender cavities. In the mathematical formulation, Brownian diffusion and thermophoresis are assumed to be the only slip mechanisms by which the solid phase can develop a significant relative velocity with respect to the liquid phase. The system of the governing equations of continuity, momentum and energy for the nanofluid, and continuity for the nanoparticles is solved through a computational code relying on the SIMPLE-C algorithm for the pressure-velocity coupling. The effective thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity of the nanofluid, and the coefficient of thermophoretic diffusion of the suspended solid phase, are evaluated using three empirical correlations based on a high number of experimental data available from diverse sources, and validated by way of literature data different from those used in generating them. Numerical simulations are executed for different height-to-width aspect ratios of the enclosure, as well as different average temperatures of the nanofluid. The heat transfer performance of the nanoparticle suspension relative to that of the base fluid is found to increase as the nanofluid average temperature is increased and, at low to moderate temperatures, the aspect ratio of the enclosure is decreased. A master–slave synchronisation control problem is addressed for current-fed DC and permanent magnet synchronous motors with all uncertain parameters. A measurable exogenous rotor position reference signal, which belongs to the class of biased sinusoidal signals with uncertain bias, amplitude, angular frequency, phase, is to be tracked without assuming its a priori knowledge. An innovative modification of disturbance cancellation techniques allows to prove that an output feedback adaptive nonlinear control scheme, which simply generalises the classical internal-model-based input law, solves the aforementioned problem, with an overall stability proof concerning the entire closed-loop system. This paper focuses on the modeling of musical melodies as networks. Notes of a melody can be treated as nodes of a network. Connections are created whenever notes are played in sequence. We analyze some main tracks coming from different music genres, with melodies played using different musical instruments. We find out that the considered networks are, in general, scale free networks and exhibit the small world property. We measure the main metrics and assess whether these networks can be considered as formed by sub-communities. Outcomes confirm that peculiar features of the tracks can be extracted from this analysis methodology. The paper deals with the elastic characterisation of microcracked solids: we analyse dispersions of cracks with arbitrary non-random orientational distributions. Particular cases of angular distributions are given by cracks all oriented in a given direction or cracks uniformly random oriented in the space. A unified theory covers all the orientational distributions between the random and the parallel ones. The micromechanical averaging inside the composite material is carried out by means of explicit results which allows us to obtain closed-form expressions for the macroscopic or equivalent elastic moduli of the overall material. The analysis has been performed in two-dimensional (2D) elasticity (plane stress and plane strain) with slit like cracks and in three-dimensional (3D) elasticity with planar circular cracks. The elastic behaviour of the microcracked solid depends upon the density of cracks and upon their orientational distribution. In particular, this study allows us to state that in two-dimensions the elastic behaviour of such a microcracked material is completely defined by one order parameter, which depends on the given angular distribution while the elastic characterisation in three-dimensions depends on two order parameters. The particular cases of isotropic orientations of cracks (both in 2D and in 3D) have been generalised to higher values of the cracks density by means of the method of the iterated homogenisation, which leads to some differential equations.
