Although, the conventional finite element nodal control volume (FE/NCV) simulation procedure for resin flow through porous fibrous media is very versatile, easy, and requires no remeshing, it does lead to the loss of flowing resin mass within a porous domain. The reasons behind such mass loss are identified and systematically analyzed. Limitations of the existing practices adopted in numerical simulation that mitigate this effect to a certain extent are identified. Two numerical models namely, the subcontrol volume model and the flow correction model, were proposed and developed to improve the mass balance. The subcontrol volume model improved the results with a little increase in computational efforts. The flow correction model completely eliminated the mass loss problem. The studies were conducted on two‐ as well as three‐dimensional preforms to confirm the accuracy and reliability of these numerical models. POLYM. The present work describes a theoretical study to demonstrate the effect of the journal misalignment on the performance of an orifice compensated hole-entry hybrid journal bearing system lubricated with ER fluid. The journal misalignment has been accounted for by defining a pair of misalignment parameters sigma and delta. Continuous Bingham Model has been used to describe the behavior of ER fluid. The bearing static and dynamic characteristic parameters presented in the study indicate that the effect of journal misalignment is in general to cause a reduction in bearing dynamic characteristic parameters whereas the electric field in the ER fluid is to partially compensate this loss.  相似文献

Gain factor and output performance of erbium-praseodymium codoped ZBLAN double-clad fiber lasers at 2.7 microm with different pumping designs were calculated and analyzed. Single-end backward pumping with a highly reflective mirror butted against one fiber end and dual-end pumping with Fresnel reflections from both fiber ends were found to be the most efficient pumping designs. Ten-watt-level Er/Pr:ZBLAN fiber lasers proved to be achievable with recent diode laser and ZBLAN fiber technologies. Their corresponding optimum fiber lengths for different pumping configurations were determined. It was also found that fiber lasers with a flat evolution of gain factor can obtain the largest output power. Experimental results of 4 m and 12 m fiber lasers showed very good agreement with simulation results.  相似文献

Scanning probe microscopy (SPM) has been one of the most important tools to image and, hopefully, to manipulate bio-structures at micro/nanoscales. However, the current out-of-plane cantilever design makes it very difficult to extend the spectrum of the current SPM technology to meet many new functionalities arising from bio-engineering applications. An in-plane scanning probe concept is developed to accommodate the new functional requirements. It is designed to have a single-strand multi-walled carbon nanotube (CNT) tip assembled at the end of the probe, a built-in actuator and a tip deflection sensor, all in the same plane. The coplanar design is compatible with most of the standard MEMS processes and would facilitate the assembly of a carbon nanotube tip to the micromachined probe. The in-plane design features a switchable stiffness which adapts the scanning probe's stiffness to the changing surface hardness of the sample. This paper describes how the variable stiffness is accomplished by engaging or disengaging electrostatically actuated clutches, in addition to the discussions on many possible benefits of the in-plane scanning platform.  相似文献

Removal of auramine dye from aqueous waste solutions was investigated by using very cheap and biosorbent, withered guava tree leaves and activated carbon. Guava leaves are readily available in the western and northern parts of India throughout the year, and hence form a cost effective alternative for removal of dyes from waste waters. The optimum contact time was found to be 120 min. in a pH range of 8–9 for 92–94% removal of the dye from aqueous solutions containing 150 mg/L of auramine dye using 2 g of the adsorbent. The effect of pH, dye concentration, sorbent dosage, temperature and contact time on the dye removal efficiency has been studied. Experimental results were found to fit both Freundlich and Langmuir models. Since the dye contains a cationic species, the removal efficiency was highest in a pH range of 8–9. Continuous adsorption studies in a packed column showed 100% removal efficiency for a flow rate of 10 ml·min−1. When compared with the activated carbon, it was also found that adsorbent derived from guava leaves is more efficient in removal of dye.  相似文献

Phantom-based measurements in mammography are well-established for quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) procedures involving equipment performance and comparisons of X-ray machines. Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is among the best suitable materials for simulation of the breast. For carrying out QA/QC exercises in India, a mammographic PMMA phantom with engraved slots for keeping thermoluminescence dosemeters (TLD) has been developed. The radiation transmission property of the developed phantom was compared with the commercially available phantoms for verifying its suitability for mammography dosimetry. The breast entrance exposure (BEE), mean glandular dose (MGD), percentage depth dose (PDD), percentage surface dose distribution (PSDD), calibration testing of automatic exposure control (AEC) and density control function of a mammography machine were measured using this phantom. MGD was derived from the measured BEE following two different methodologies and the results were compared. The PDD and PSDD measurements were carried out using LiF: Mg, Cu, P chips. The in-house phantom was found comparable with the commercially available phantoms. The difference in the MGD values derived using two different methods were found in the range of 17.5-32.6 %. Measured depth ranges in the phantom lie between 0.32 and 0.40 cm for 75 % depth dose, 0.73 and 0.92 cm for 50 % depth dose, and 1.54 and 1.78 cm for 25 % depth dose. Higher PSDD value was observed towards chest wall edge side of the phantom, which is due to the orientation of cathode-anode axis along the chest wall to the nipple direction. Results obtained for AEC configuration testing shows that the observed mean optical density (O.D) of the phantom image was 1.59 and O.D difference for every successive increase in thickness of the phantom was within±0.15 O.D. Under density control function testing, at -2 and -1 density settings, the variation in film image O.D was within±0.15 O.D of the normal density setting '0' and at +2 and +1 density setting, it was observed to be within±0.30 O.D. This study indicates that the locally made PMMA TLD slot phantom can be used to measure various mammography QC parameters which are essentially required for better outcomes in mammography.  相似文献

The increase of greenhouse gas (i.e., CO(2)) levels in the atmosphere has caused noticeable climate change. Many nations are currently looking into methods of permanent underground storage for CO(2) in an attempt to mitigate this problem. The goal of this work is to develop a process for studying the total carbon content in soils before, during, and after CO(2) injection to ensure that no leakage is occurring or to determine how much is leaking if it is occurring and what effect it will have on the ecosystem between the injection formation and the atmosphere. In this study, we quantitatively determine the total carbon concentration in soil using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). A soil sample from Starkville, Mississippi, USA was mixed with different amounts of carbon powder, which was used as a calibration for additional carbon in soil. Test samples were prepared by adding different but known amounts of carbon powder to a soil sample and then mixing with polyvinyl alcohol binder before being pressed into pellets. LIBS spectra of the test samples were collected and analyzed to obtain optimized conditions for the measurement of total carbon in soil with LIBS. The total carbon content in the samples was also measured by a carbon analyzer, and the data (average of triplicates) were used as a reference in developing calibration curves for a modified version of the single linear regression model and the multiple linear regression model. The calibration data were then used to determine the total carbon concentration of an unknown sample. This work is intended to be used in the initial development of a miniaturized, field-portable LIBS analyzer for CO(2) leak detection.  相似文献

In the present study, we report the synthesis of aqueous stable gold nanoparticles by using calix[4]arene polyhydrazide (CPH) as both reducing and capping agents. The calix[4]arene polyhydrazide reduced gold nanoparticles (CPH-AuNps) were characterized by UV/Vis, particle size analyzer (PSA) and transmission electron mictroscopy (TEM). The records confirmed high stability of CPH-AuNps in aqueous solution over a long period of time and even at varied pH. Additionally, CPH-AuNps have been investigated for its application as "Turn Off" fluorescent sensor for Hg[II]. A concentration of Hg[II] in the limit of 10 nM to 10 microM can be detected based on fluorescence quenching of the CPH-AuNPs and it was also concluded from the spectroscopic data that CPH-AuNPs possess excellent selectivity to Hg[II] over several metal ions like Pb[II], Cu[II], Cd[II], Mn[II], Zn[II] and Ni[II].  相似文献

Nanostructured SnO2 thin films were prepared by spray pyrolysis technique onto glass substrates with different thickness by varying quantity of precursor solution. The structural, optical and electrical properties of these films have been studied. The crystallographic structure of the films was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD). It is found that the films are tetragonal with (110) orientation. The grain size increases with thickness. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) showed that the nanocrystalline nature of the films with porous nature. The grain size increased 14 to 29 nm with increase in film thickness. The studies on the optical properties show that the direct band gap value decreases from 3.75 to 3.50 eV. The temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity was studied. The activation energies of the films are calculated from the conductance temperature characteristics. The nanostructured SnO2 thin films were used as sensing layers for resistive gas sensors. The dependence of gas sensing properties on the thickness of SnO2 thin films was investigated. The gas response of the SnO2 thin films towards the H2S gas was determined at an operating temperature of 150 degrees C. The sensitivity towards H2S gas is strongly depending on surface morphology of the SnO2 thin films.  相似文献
