Lingual ischemia following tongue entrapment in a glass bottle

A 10-year-old, previously healthy female presented to the emergency department via emergency medical service transport, with her tongue tightly entrapped inside a glass bottle (9 oz, Yoohoo brand of chocolate drink). The tongue was massively edematous and ecchymotic due to impaired venous return from constriction by the neck of the bottle. After repeated attempts at mechanically reducing the tongue out of the bottle, a professional glazier was contacted, who was able to remove the bottle in the operating room with a steel glass cutter. Needle evacuation of a small hematoma was then performed to decrease the pressure ischemia to the tongue, which began to improve quickly.

Culture is the basic method in bacteriology. It allowed the discovery of Helicobacter pylori. Problems in the culture of this fragile, slow-growing bacterium concern transport and processing in the laboratory, but they can be solved. Culture has a 100% specificity. When performed properly, it has a sensitivity in the range of the other best diagnostic methods for Helicobacter pylori. It allows strain typing and, most importantly, susceptibility testing to antibiotics, because an increased rate of acquired resistance of Helicobacter pylori is currently observed. Culture must be performed in clinical trials, at least when antibiotics, to which Helicobacter pylori may be resistant, are used. In clinical practice, culture and susceptibility testing can generally be restricted to treatment failures. However, it is important to monitor Helicobacter pylori susceptibility to antibiotics at a national or regional level in order to give recommendations for primary treatment.     

Proximity problems for points on a rectilinear plane with rectangular obstacles

We consider the following four problems for a setS ofk points on a plane, equipped with the rectilinear metric and containing a setR ofn disjoint rectangular obstacles (so that distance is measured by a shortest rectilinear path avoiding obstacles inR): (a) find aclosest pair of points inS, (b) find anearest neighbor for each point inS, (c) compute the rectilinearVoronoi diagram ofS, and (d) compute a rectilinearminimal spanning tree ofS. We describeO ((n+k) log(n+k))-time sequential algorithms for (a) and (b) based onplane-sweep, and the consideration of geometrically special types of shortest paths, so-calledz-first paths. For (c) we present anO ((n+k) log(n+k) logn)-time sequential algorithm that implements a sophisticateddivide-and-conquer scheme with an addedextension phase. In the extension phase of this scheme we introduce novel geometric structures, in particular so-calledz-diagrams, and techniques associated with the Voronoi diagram. Problem (d) can be reduced to (c) and solved inO ((n+k) log(n+k) logn) time as well. All our algorithms arenear-optimal, as well as easy to implement. Microstructural Analysis in Processing of the High-Tc Superconductor Ba2YCu3O7-x in Air

In the synthesis of the superconducting compound Ba₂YCu₃O_7-x from a stoichiometric mixture containing BaCO₃, Y₂O₃, and CuO In air, a low-melting liquid phase is formed at about 890°C. The liquid phase was identified as a ternary eutectic located within the compatibility triangle Ba₂YCu₃O_7-x–BaCuO₂–CuO. The implication of this finding for the processing of Ba₂YCu₃O_7-x is discussed.     

Characteristics of inhomogeneously filled double L-septa waveguides

Three types of inhomogeneous double L-septa guide (DLSG) produced by selective dielectric loading of the different regions are analyzed. The cutoff and bandwidth characteristics of these configurations are compared with the inhomogeneous T-septa guide and homogeneous DLSG. An optimum configuration with very large bandwidth emerges as a potential structure for practical implementation
