This paper describes a technique using dimensional analysis that so far has been rarely, if ever, used in studies of universal access. However, this procedure can produce a robust decision support process for inclusive designs. In this paper, it is applied to a case study of a wheelchair robot computer interface with choices in data input methods, addressing disparate requirements of different groups of intended users. The main underlying issue is to combine technical measurements, speed of operation and cost with subjective opinion. It turns out that Braglia’s method has greater robustness in determining rank compared to standard techniques. In this, case a simple switch was rated better than a mouse or voice operation for control.  相似文献

The aims were to assess the ability of a pressure transducer to measure compressive stress within the annulus fibrosus of degenerated intervertebral discs. Measurements could help to explain the mechanisms of disc failure and low back pain. The methods used were as follows. Thirteen full-depth cores of annulus, 7 mm in diameter, were removed from the middle and outer annuli of two severely degenerated human discs and constrained within a metal cylinder. Then static compressive forces were applied by a plane-ended metal indenter of diameter 6.8 mm, while a strain-gauged pressure transducer, side mounted in a needle of diameter 0.9 mm and calibrated in saline, was pulled through the tissue. The transducer output was converted into stress, and the average measured stress was compared with the nominal applied stress. Measurements were repeated at up to 21 load levels, with the transducer oriented vertically and horizontally. The results showed that the measured and applied stress were linearly related (average r2 = 0.98) with a mean gradient (calibration factor) of 0.98 (vertical stress) and 0.92 (horizontal stress). Gradients ranged between 1.28 and 0.73. Damaged transducers grossly under-recorded 'stress' even though their output remained proportional to applied load. It was concluded that pressure transducers can measure compressive stress inside a degenerated human annulus. The tissue is sufficiently deformable to allow efficient coupling of stress between the matrix and transducer membrane. Damage to the transducer can give misleading results.  相似文献

Laughter can be crucial to patient care, but physician and clown Patch Adams, M.D., sees nothing funny about the greed he finds in the nation's health care system and in current reform plans. Adams has spent almost 25 years infusing practitioners with a sense of humor. This philosophy extends into his work as founder of the not-for-profit Gesundheit Institute, which is trying to build an "ultimate fantasy" hospital on 310 acres in rural West Virginia. So far, he's raised $1.1 million, built one of three main buildings, and broken ground on a second. However, millions of dollars still need to be raised. Adams sees the very notion of his dream hospital as a necessary pie in the face of the traditional health care system. Besides speaking and performing, Adams takes groups of clowns to Russia, where they perform in hospitals, orphanages, prisons and on the street. A study was carried out to relate subjective and objective measures of stress at slaughter and meat quality in pigs. Thirteen slaughter plants were visited. The systems used for handling the pigs pre-slaughter and the levels of stress experienced by the animals were subjectively assessed. The sound level immediately before stunning was also measured. Generally, systems that were rated as being most stressful also produced higher levels of sound, probably because of the vocalisations of the pigs. As the size of plant increased, there was a tendency for the level of stress, and the recorded sound level, to increase. This appeared to be because larger plants operated faster and were more likely to use restraining conveyors supplied by races to handle the animals before stunning. The restraint associated with these seems stressful to pigs. Five plants were selected for further study. Two had been assessed as having handling systems that produced a low level of stress in the pigs, one as having a system producing a medium level, and two as having poor systems producing high levels of stress. Blood samples were collected at exsanguination, and meat quality was assessed. As the level of subjectively assessed stress experienced by the pigs increased, so did the average blood levels of lactate and creatine phosphokinase (CPK). There was also a progressive increase in the potential incidence of pale, soft, exudative (PSE) and dark, firm, dry (DFD) meat in the plants using more stressful handling systems. Additionally, there were positive relationships between sound level and lactate and CPK, and sound level and indices of poorer meat quality. Cortisol concentrations were not different in pigs killed in the different systems and probably reflect events earlier in the handling process, such as in transport and lairage, rather than the stress experienced immediately before stunning. The overall conclusion was that subjective assessments of the stress suffered by pigs correlate well with objective measures and that higher stress levels are associated with poorer meat quality.  相似文献

Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) are advancing because of their superior external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) and color purity. Still, additional work is needed for blue PeLEDs to achieve the same benchmarks as the other visible colors. This study demonstrates an extremely efficient blue PeLED with a 488 nm peak emission, a maximum luminance of 8600 cd m−2, and a maximum EQE of 12.2% by incorporating the double-sided ethane-1,2-diammonium bromide (EDBr2) ligand salt along with the long-chain ligand methylphenylammonium chloride (MeCl). The EDBr2 successfully improves the interaction between 2D perovskite layers by reducing the weak van der Waals interaction and creating a Dion–Jacobson (DJ) structure. Whereas the pristine sample (without EDBr2) is inhibited by small stacking number (n) 2D phases with nonradiative recombination regions that diminish the PeLED performance, adding EDBr2 successfully enables better energy transfer from small n phases to larger n phases. As evidenced by photoluminescence (PL), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) characterization, EDBr2 improves the morphology by reduction of pinholes and passivation of defects, subsequently improving the efficiencies and operational lifetimes of quasi-2D blue PeLEDs.  相似文献

Incremental sheet metal forming in general and Single Point Incremental Forming (SPIF) specifically have gone through a period of intensive development with growing attention from research institutes worldwide. The result of these efforts is significant progress in the understanding of the underlying forming mechanisms and opportunities as well as limitations associated with this category of flexible forming processes. Furthermore, creative process design efforts have enhanced the process capabilities and process planning methods. Also, simulation capabilities have evolved substantially. This review paper aims to provide an overview of the body of knowledge with respect to Single Point Incremental Forming. Without claiming to be exhaustive, each section aims for an up-to-date state-of-the-art review with corresponding conclusions on scientific progress and outlook on expected further developments.  相似文献
