The traditional role of food packaging is continuing to evolve in response to changing market needs. Current drivers such as consumer's demand for safer, “healthier,” and higher‐quality foods, ideally with a long shelf‐life; the demand for convenient and transparent packaging, and the preference for more sustainable packaging materials, have led to the development of new packaging technologies, such as active packaging (AP). As defined in the European regulation (EC) No 450/2009, AP systems are designed to “deliberately incorporate components that would release or absorb substances into or from the packaged food or the environment surrounding the food.” Active packaging materials are thereby “intended to extend the shelf‐life or to maintain or improve the condition of packaged food.” Although extensive research on AP technologies is being undertaken, many of these technologies have not yet been implemented successfully in commercial food packaging systems. Broad communication of their benefits in food product applications will facilitate the successful development and market introduction. In this review, an overview of AP technologies, such as antimicrobial, antioxidant or carbon dioxide‐releasing systems, and systems absorbing oxygen, moisture or ethylene, is provided, and, in particular, scientific publications illustrating the benefits of such technologies for specific food products are reviewed. Furthermore, the challenges in applying such AP technologies to food systems and the anticipated direction of future developments are discussed. This review will provide food and packaging scientists with a thorough understanding of the benefits of AP technologies when applied to specific foods and hence can assist in accelerating commercial adoption.  相似文献

Systemic blood stream infections are a major threat to human health and are dramatically increasing worldwide. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a WHO-alerted multi-resistant pathogen of extreme importance as a cause of sepsis. Septicemia patients have significantly increased survival chances if sepsis is diagnosed in the early stages. Affinity materials can not only represent attractive tools for specific diagnostics of pathogens in the blood but can prospectively also serve as the technical foundation of therapeutic filtration devices. Based on the recently developed aptamers directed against P. aeruginosa, we here present aptamer-functionalized beads for specific binding of this pathogen in blood samples. These aptamer capture beads (ACBs) are manufactured by crosslinking bovine serum albumin (BSA) in an emulsion and subsequent functionalization with the amino-modified aptamers on the bead surface using the thiol- and amino-reactive bispecific crosslinker PEG4-SPDP. Specific and quantitative binding of P. aeruginosa as the dedicated target of the ACBs was demonstrated in serum and blood. These initial but promising results may open new routes for the development of ACBs as a platform technology for fast and reliable diagnosis of bloodstream infections and, in the long term, blood filtration techniques in the fight against sepsis.  相似文献

A structural model of Saccharomyces cerevisiae oxidosqualene cyclase (SceOSC) suggests that some residues of the conserved sequence Pro-Ala-Glu-Val-Phe-Gly (residues 524-529) belong to a channel constriction that gives access to the active-site cavity. Starting from the SceOSC C457D mutant, which lacks the cysteine residue next to the catalytic Asp456 residue Cys457 has been replaced but Asp456 is still there, we prepared two further mutants where the wild-type residues Ala525 and Glu526 were individually replaced by cysteine. These mutants, especially E526C, were very sensitive to the thiol-reacting agent dodecyl-maleimide. Moreover, both the specific activity and the thermal stability of E526C were severely reduced. A similar decrease of the enzyme functionality was obtained by replacing Glu526 with alanine, while substitution with the conservative residues aspartate or glutamine did not alter catalytic activity. Molecular modeling of the yeast wild-type OSC and mutants on the template structure of human OSC confirms that the channel constriction is an important aspect of the protein structure and suggests a critical structural role for Glu526.  相似文献

Numerical modelling of wind flow over complex dune topography is an ambitious prospect. There is an increasing need to understand wind flow over complex topography for land planning purposes to enable prediction of sediment transport at a particular site. New surveying techniques permit the rapid development of digital terrain models, however a stumbling block is the ability of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to emulate the wind flow over such a landscape. To overcome these difficulties, it is important to establish the parameters within which such simulations can operate. This paper details an initial two-dimensional numerical model developed in order to test various modelling assumptions against experimental field wind data. Mason Bay, Stewart Island, New Zealand was chosen as an undisturbed but accessible experimental site with a prevalent on-shore wind perpendicular to a simple foredune and a complex down-wind parabolic dune system. A complex topographical two-dimensional model with vegetation represented as a roughness was compared against field data along a transect dissecting a dune system.This paper establishes that:
* Replicating the roughness patterns at the surface is important
* The inlet profile should be duplicated with care
* Modelling only a portion of the domain can have an effect on the flow patterns due to outflow effects
* There is a modelling decision to be made between the complexity of the topography and the sophistication of the turbulence model and degree to which vegetation and sand transportation are modelled.
The long-term aim is to instil confidence in numerical techniques so that such technology can be used for predictive purposes.  相似文献

Hydrogen gas physisorption in two distinct dinuclear Pt(II) metallacycles was investigated with 2H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Hydrogen adsorption isotherm data and 2H NMR spectroscopy indicated that hydrogen storage occurs via condensation within the cavities of one of the macrocycles and at the interstitial sites in the other. In addition, this study further supports the notion that heat of adsorption and pore size play critical roles in hydrogen storage.  相似文献

Our objective in this work is to study the HF etching chemical treatment effect on the mechanical and optical properties of soda-lime glass eroded with 200 g fixed sand mass. We followed the evolution of these properties in relation to the chemical attack duration.The results show a clear improvement of the measured properties. The strength of the eroded samples is 44.23 ± 0.91 MPa. It increases up to 57.73 ± 1.76 MPa after 15 min of treatment and reaches 181.43 ± 23.69 MPa after 1 h. This last value is much higher than the as received glass strength (117.5 ± 10.48 MPa). The optical transmission of the eroded samples is about 18.5%. During the first 2 min of the chemical treatment, an important drop of the optical transmission (12%) was observed. However, improvement of the transmission was achieved for longer chemical treatment durations. After 8 h of treatment, the optical transmission increases up to 57%. Microscopic observations show that the HF attack causes the opening and the blunting of the surface cracks. In general, the surface state is improved during the chemical treatment.  相似文献

We investigated the influences of odor exposure on performance and on breathing measures. The task was composed of tracking, short-term memory, and peripheral reaction parts. During rest or while performing the task, 12 participants were exposed to 4 different odors in 2 intensities. The higher intensity of the malodors induced a short-term decrement in mean inspiration flow (Vi/Ti) after stimulus onset and impaired performance in the short-term memory task, as compared with control trials; no effect was found for the positively judged odors. The study suggests that a distractor as simple as a bad smell may pull a person off task, however briefly, and may result in a detriment to performance. Actual or potential applications of this research involve designing or securing tasks in such a way that a brief withdrawal of attention does not have fatal consequences.  相似文献

We propose a novel approach to cross-lingual language model and translation lexicon adaptation for statistical machine translation (SMT) based on bilingual latent semantic analysis. Bilingual LSA enables latent topic distributions to be efficiently transferred across languages by enforcing a one-to-one topic correspondence during training. Using the proposed bilingual LSA framework, model adaptation can be performed by, first, inferring the topic posterior distribution of the source text and then applying the inferred distribution to an n-gram language model of the target language and translation lexicon via marginal adaptation. The background phrase table is enhanced with the additional phrase scores computed using the adapted translation lexicon. The proposed framework also features rapid bootstrapping of LSA models for new languages based on a source LSA model of another language. Our approach is evaluated on the Chinese–English MT06 test set using the medium-scale SMT system and the GALE SMT system measured in BLEU and NIST scores. Improvement in both scores is observed on both systems when the adapted language model and the adapted translation lexicon are applied individually. When the adapted language model and the adapted translation lexicon are applied simultaneously, the gain is additive. At the 95% confidence interval of the unadapted baseline system, the gain in both scores is statistically significant using the medium-scale SMT system, while the gain in the NIST score is statistically significant using the GALE SMT system.  相似文献
