This paper describes the difference in relative reactivity of the aldehyde groups present in dialdehyde starch towards different oxidising agents. The oxidation of dialdehyde starch with peracetic acid and sodium bromide leads to only partial oxidation to give mono‐aldehyde‐carboxy starch, while oxidation with sodium chlorite results in dicarboxy derivatives. In order to obtain a more in depth insight into this phenomenon, the products obtained after partial oxidation via both routes were isolated and characterised. The results showed a pronounced difference in preferences between the two carbonyl groups towards the different oxidising agents.  相似文献

This article presents an overview of the recently published American Petroleum Institute (API) Recommended Practice 579, which covers fitness-for-service assessment of pressure equipment in petrochemical and other industries. Although API 579 covers a wide range of flaws and damage mechanisms, including local metal loss, pitting corrosion, blisters, weld misalignment, and fire damage, the emphasis of the present article is on the assessment of crack-like flaws. The API 579 procedure for evaluating cracks incorporates a failure assessment diagram (FAD) methodology very similar to that in other documents, such as the British Energy R6 approach and the BS 7910 method. The API document contains an extensive compendium of K solutions, including a number of new cases generated specifically for API 579. In the initial release of the document, API has adopted existing reference stress solutions for the calculation of Lr in the FAD procedure. In a future release, however, API plans to replace these solutions with values based on a more rational definition of reference stress. These revised reference stress solutions will incorporate the effect of weld mismatch. In addition to the Appendices of K and reference stress solutions, API 579 includes appendices that provide guidance on estimating fracture toughness and weld residual stress distributions. Over the next few years these appendices will be enhanced with advances in technology. Recently, API has entered into discussions with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) to convert API 579 into a joint API/ASME fitness-for-service guide.  相似文献

Hemimysis anomala, a Ponto-Caspian littoral mysid, is an emerging Great Lakes invader that was discovered in Lakes Michigan and Ontario in 2006. Similar to the native mysid Mysis diluviana, Hemimysis exhibits a diel vertical migration pattern but generally inhabits shallower and warmer waters than M. diluviana. Because basic information on the distribution, habitat use, and biology of Hemimysis in the Great Lakes is scarce, the potential for food web disruption by Hemimysis cannot easily be predicted. Preliminary observations indicate widespread invasion of Hemimysis in Lake Ontario. In this study, we confirm the presence of Hemimysis at sites spanning the northern and southern shores of Lake Ontario and the presence of the individuals during winter months. In one horizontal tow in November 2007, over 26,000 individuals were collected with a length range of 4.4 to 9.0 mm and an average caloric density of 611 cal/g wet weight. The most effective methods for sampling Hemimysis were horizontal tows with either a zooplankton net in the water column or a benthic sled near the lake bottom. Although more quantitative data on the life history and distribution of this species is necessary, our preliminary observations support the prediction that the potential for Hemimysis to impact the nearshore food web in Lake Ontario appears high.  相似文献

It is commonly accepted that users of a biometric system may have differing degrees of accuracy within the system. Some people may have trouble authenticating, while others may be particularly vulnerable to impersonation. Goats, wolves, and lambs are labels commonly applied to these problem users. These user types are defined in terms of verification performance when users are matched against themselves (goats) or when matched against others (lambs and wolves). The relationship between a user's genuine and impostor match results suggests four new user groups: worms, doves, chameleons, and phantoms. We establish formal definitions for these animals and a statistical test for their existence. A thorough investigation is conducted using a broad range of biometric modalities, including 2D and 3D faces, fingerprints, iris, speech, and keystroke dynamics. Patterns that emerge from the results expose novel, important, and encouraging insights into the nature of biometric match results. A new framework for the evaluation of biometric systems based on the biometric menagerie, as opposed to collective statistics, is proposed.  相似文献

Early colonization by Zyginidia scutellaris leafhoppers might be a key factor in the attraction and settling of generalist predators, such as Orius spp., in maize fields. In this paper, we aimed to determine whether our observations of early season increases in field populations of Orius spp. reflect a specific attraction to Z. scutellaris-induced maize volatiles, and how the responses of Orius predators to herbivore-induced volatiles (HIPVs) might be affected by previous experiences on plants infested by herbivorous prey. Therefore, we examined the innate and learned preferences of Orius majusculus toward volatiles from maize plants attacked by three potential herbivores with different feeding strategies: the leafhopper Z. scutellaris (mesophyll feeder), the lepidopteran Spodoptera littoralis (chewer), and another leafhopper Dalbulus maidis (phloem feeder). In addition, we examined the volatile profiles emitted by maize plants infested by the three herbivores. Our results show that predators exhibit a strong innate attraction to volatiles from maize plants infested with Z. scutellaris or S. littoralis. Previous predation experience in the presence of HIPVs influences the predator’s odor preferences. The innate preference for plants with cell or tissue damage may be explained by these plants releasing far more volatiles than plants infested by the phloem-sucking D. maidis. However, a predation experience on D. maidis-infested plants increased the preference for D. maidis-induced maize volatiles. After O. majusculus experienced L3-L4 larvae (too large to serve as prey) on S. littoralis-infested plants, they showed reduced attraction toward these plants and an increased attraction toward D. maidis-infested plants. When offered young larvae of S. littoralis, which are more suitable prey, preference toward HIPVs was similar to that of naive individuals. The HIPVs from plants infested by herbivores with distinctly different feeding strategies showed distinguishable quantitative differences in (Z)-3-hexenal, (E)-2-hexenal, and methyl salicylate. These compounds might serve as reliable indicators of prey presence and identity for the predator. Our results support the idea that feeding by Z. scutellaris results in the emission of maize’s HIPVs that initially recruit Orius spp. into maize fields.  相似文献

Contact-impact algorithms, which are sometimes called slideline algorithms, are a computationally time-consuming part of many explicit simulations of non-linear problems because they involve many branches, so they are not amenable to vectorization, which is essential for speed on supercomputers. The pinball algorithm is a simplified slideline algorithm which is readily vectorized. Its major idea is to embed pinballs in surface elements and to enforce the impenetrability condition only to pinballs. It can be implemented in either a Lagrange multiplier or penalty method. It is shown that, in any Lagrange multiplier method, no iterations are needed to define the contact surface. Examples of solutions and running times are given.  相似文献

We have built on the U.C.S.D. P-system (running on an IBM Personal Computer) a relational algebra processor, MRDS/FS, which is extremely powerful and which supports a functional syntax for the programmer-user. The relational algebra is provided in the extended operators μ-join, σ-join, project and select. The domain algebra is fully implemented for the first time, giving operations on attributes: arithmetic, logic, comparison and four different categories of aggregation of these. A strictly functional syntax is provided, permitting user-defined functions using the relational and domain algebras as primitive operations. An interactive editor permits the creation, copying and changing of both relations and user-defined functions.  相似文献
