Live delivery of neurosurgical operating theater experience in virtual reality

A system for assisting in microneurosurgical training and for delivering interactive mixed reality surgical experience live was developed and experimented in hospital premises. An interactive experience from the neurosurgical operating theater was presented together with associated medical content on virtual reality eyewear of remote users. Details of the stereoscopic 360‐degree capture, surgery imaging equipment, signal delivery, and display systems are presented, and the presence experience and the visual quality questionnaire results are discussed. The users reported positive scores on the questionnaire on topics related to the user experience achieved in the trial.     

Extension of the decidability of the marked PCP to instances with unique blocks

In the Post Correspondence Problem (PCP) an instance (h,g)$(h,g)$ consists of two morphisms h$h$ and g$g$, and the problem is to determine whether or not there exists a nonempty word w$w$ such that h(w)=g(w)$h\left(w\right)=g\left(w\right)$. Here we prove that the PCP is decidable for instances with unique blocks using the decidability of the marked PCP. Also, we show that it is decidable whether an instance satisfying the uniqueness condition for continuations has an infinite solution. These results establish a new and larger class of decidable instances of the PCP, including the class of marked instances.     

Characterization of anodized aluminium—Copper vapour-deposited films by ion scattering spectrometry

Composition-depth profiles for anodized films, 100 Å thick, formed under galvanostatic conditions on vapour-deposited aluminium containing 1–10 at.% copper have been obtained via Ion Scattering Spectrometry (ISS). The OAl ratio found for the anodic layer corresponds to that for Al₂O₃ and the Cu concentration in the aluminium metal measured near the oxide—metal interface was similar to that for non-oxidized alloys. Additionally, no metallic impurities (> 0.1 at.%) were detectable in the oxide layer or the alloy.     

Zone melting of indium phosphide

Bulk indium phosphide crystals have been prepared by zone melting with dislocation densities 104 ≤ N_d ≤ 105 cm^-2. The residual impurity level in nominally undoped crystals and the dopant distribution in Cd-, Sn- and Ge-doped zone melted ingots, as revealed by spark source mass spectrometric analyses, indicate a strong interaction between segregation at the solid/liquid interface and vapor transport. The effective distribution coefficients for Sn and Ge in zone melted InP are k_e(Sn) = 0.3 and k_e(Ge) = 0.4. The free electron concentration measured in the middle section of nominally undoped ingots is N_D-N_A = 1.9 × 10¹⁵ cm^-3 corresponding to a Hall mobility Μ_e = 3263 cm^2V-1sec^-l.     

Atomic layer deposition process with TiF4 as a precursor for depositing metal fluoride thin films

A novel atomic layer deposition process for the preparation of fluoride thin films in a temperature range of 225 degrees C-400 degrees C is introduced. The crystallinity, morphology, composition, thicknesses, refractive indices, and transmittance of the films are analyzed. Low impurity levels are obtained at 350 degrees C-400 degrees C with good stoichiometry. Refractive indices of 1.34-1.42 for MgF(2), 1.43 for CaF(2), and 1.57-1.61 for LaF(3) films are obtained.     

Treatment of adrenoleukodystrophy with bone marrow transplantation

Three children with adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) underwent allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) between 1992 and 1993. The first boy had attention deficits, marked neuropsychological deficits and widespread demyelination in the frontal lobes on MRI before transplantation. Four years later he has mentally deteriorated and the demyelination on MRI has progressed. The second boy had no symptoms but had white matter lesions on MRI when diagnosed. He was regularly followed with MRI and neuropsychological investigations until BMT 18 months later. A progress of the lesions was noted on the initial MRI investigations, and 4 months before BMT a worsening of deficits in attention and kinaesthetic praxis could be observed. He rapidly deteriorated after the transplantation and died 18 months later. Both PCR and in situ hybridization confirmed the presence of donor cells in the brain. The third boy had no symptoms but white matter lesions on MRI when diagnosed. The neuropsychological tests remained normal but a slight progress was observed on MRI just before transplantation. This boy is still healthy 3.5 years after BMT. BMT as treatment for ALD has to be considered very early, even if a child without symptoms but signs of demyelination on MRI, if a suitable donor is available.     

Electron beam float zone growth of niobium-tantalum alloy crystals

The growth of seeded crystals of Nb_(1−x)Ta_x of composition 0 < x < .25 by electron beam float zoning is described. The purity of these crystals is characterized on the basis of spark source mass spectrometric analysis.     

Left anterior and left posterior hemiblock in tricuspid atresia and transposition of the great vessels: observations and electrocardiographic nomenclature and electrophysiologic mechanisms

A patient with tricuspid atresia and characteristic electrocardiographic features of counterclockwise and superiorly oriented frontal plane QRS loop (left anterior hemiblock) is presented. Operative intervention resulted in a clockwise and inferior rotation of the frontal QRS loop (left posterior hemiblock) without the development of complete left bundle branch block. This observation suggests that the electrocardiographic pattern of left anterior hemiblock may result from other mechanisms in addition to block of the left bundle branch fibers oriented toward the anterior part of the left ventricle. The case further suggests that electrocardiographic patterns of apparent A-V conduction defects may not be at all associated with true block in the A-V conduction system. Further, it emphasizes the fact that various electrophysiologic mechanisms may account for identical electrocardiographic patterns.     

Inhomogeneous compression of PEMFC gas diffusion layer: Part II. Modeling the effect

The effect of inhomogeneous compression of GDL on the mass and charge transfer in PEMFC is studied. The model utilizes experimentally evaluated GDL parameters as a function of thickness. The modeling results are compared with a conventional model that excludes the effects. As a result, it is shown that the inhomogeneous compression has a significant effect on the current density distribution because of the varying contact resistance between GDL and electrode. This also implies that there are possible hot spots occurring inside the electrode, and thus inhomogeneous compression can have significant effects on the lifetime and local performance of the cell. According to the achieved results, the inhomogeneous compression of GDL cannot be neglected.
