Simple formulae for the computation of the axial stresses of pipes subjected to thermal stratification are presented. The formulae are based on conventional beam theory. The pipe cross-section is divided into temperature zones. A beam with its own material properties is attributed to each zone. Through coupling equations the beams are linked and the governing equation system developed. This system is solved analytically and expressions for the axial stresses are obtained. Partial condensation and non-adiabatic rectification of binary mixtures in packed columns. Vertical tube assemblies are preferred for partial condensation of vapour mixtures. The mixture of vapours is fed through the tubes in countercurrent flow to the falling condensate, while coolant flows through the jacket. Only with very large ratios of length L to diameter d of the tubes, i.e. L/d 200, does the separatory effect of partial condensation, owing to rectification mass transfer between the phases, exceed the enrichment effect of partial condensation. Use of ring-shaped packings drastically reduces the characteristic diameter, so that the additional separatory effect occurs at relatively short tube lengths. In the present paper, experimental results concerning the separation efficiency of tubes packed with Raschig rings for non-adiabatic rectification and partial condensation of the “negative” binary mixture n-heptane/benzene are reported and evaluated with the aid of the extended two-film theory. It is found that the resistance to mass transfer averaged over the length of the tube lies entirely on the liquid side on non-adiabatic rectification. Correlation of the Sherwood number of the condensate taken over the length of the tube and the condensate loading clearly shows that the usual calculation of partial condensation with average total mass transfer coefficients does not give physically meaningful results in the case of liquid-side resistance to transport. Calculating procedures which account for the variation of the partial mass transfer coefficients along the tube should lead to improved evaluation or prediction of separation efficiency. 相似文献

Two studies were conducted to investigate the predictive role of person-specific, product-specific, and situation-specific influences on the use of instruction manuals in the field of electrical consumer products. In a laboratory study, 42 participants were observed while putting a vacuum cleaner into operation. Situational primes (i.e., receiving a verbal cue that the packaging contains an instruction manual) increased the probability of the user manual being read. Additional verbal information that the manual contains information on energy-saving behaviours was especially motivating for persons with high environmental concern. Self-report data, collected on a wide range of products, suggest that product complexity is the best predictor of instruction manual use. In a second study with 30 participants, different positions of product labels were compared, i.e. placing the information on the packaging or directly onto the product. The study examines the cognitive demands of collision avoidance under a range of maritime scenarios. Operators used a PC-based radar simulator to navigate set courses over 100 6-min trials varying in collision threat and traffic density. Corrective maneuvers were made through the application of standard navigation rules and by using two decision aids (target acquisition and test maneuver). Results showed widespread effects of collision threat in terms of decision aid use, subjective workload, and secondary task performance. Most notably, demand increased markedly over the course of emergency trials, in which collision threat resulted from rule violation by target vessels. The findings are discussed in terms of the comparison between predictable demands (requiring standard course changes) and those involving uncertainty about the others' intentions (involving more intensive monitoring and forced delays in corrective action).
