Over the last 30 years, the use of motorised recreational craft on inland waters has increased significantly, and it is likely that this trend will continue. This growing use of rivers, lakes and water storage reservoirs for recreational purposes has led to concerns about increasing anthropological pressures on freshwater environments. As a result, numerous studies focusing on the possible impact of power boats on inland waterbodies have been undertaken since the early 1970s, when attention started to be drawn to environmental impacts associated with this type of recreation. This paper presents an overview of identified and documented physical, chemical and biological impacts as a result of motorised recreational activities on lakes and reservoirs. Relevant literature, including research papers, government reports and bibliographies, was consulted in the preparation of this review. It has become obvious that in the past, biological impacts have been underestimated. Thus, there is a need for further, more focused, research into the impacts on not only freshwater ecosystems but on terrestrial biota surrounding recreational waters. 相似文献

Barium strontium titanate (BST) thin films are studied with respect to their application as tunable dielectric at microwave frequencies. BST thin films are deposited by means of radio-frequency magnetron sputtering on platinized Si substrates. The substrate to target distance during sputter deposition is varied and the effect on structure, topology, composition and electronic properties is monitored using X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, Rutherford backscattering spectrometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. These findings are related to the dielectric measurements, which are carried out at 1 MHz and in the microwave range up to 8 GHz using metal-insulator-metal structures with Pt electrodes. For further device evaluation, leakage current measurements are carried out. Changing the process parameter strongly affects the composition of the films. The results emphasize the possibility for enhancing the microwave properties by fine-tuning of the chosen process parameter. 相似文献

The correlations between formation of melanoidins and the content of α-dicarbonyl compounds and colour formation were studied in Maillard reaction model sucrose solutions at high treating temperatures (130 °C) corresponding to the industrial sucrose processing. Molecular weight distribution was determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and α-dicarbonyls as high reactive intermediates of the Maillard reaction were detected by RP-HPLC and GC/MS. Referring to formation of melanoidins, new knowledge could be gained. The investigations clearly point out, that individual α-dicarbonyls are involved in formation of specific molecular weight fractions. 3-Deoxyhexosulose (3-DH) and methylglyoxal are the important α-dicarbonyl compounds in thermal-treated sucrose solutions. A low molecular weight fraction with a molecular weight range of <5,800 g/mol preferably occurs when 3-DH is formed in high concentrations. The high increase in intensity of a low molecular weight fraction is combined with a strong colour formation. In contrast to 3-DH, methylglyoxal promotes the formation of high molecular weight fractions between 6,600 g/mol and approximately 17,000 g/mol. Furthermore, model solutions with a high intensity of high molecular weight fractions show an early colour formation during the starting period of the reaction. Indeed, this early browning is not as intensive as the colour formation caused by the low molecular weight fraction during the later stage of the browning reaction. Out of this, 3-DH can be regarded as the most important intermediate for an intensive colour formation in sucrose solutions. 相似文献

Conventional fluids for peritoneal dialysis (PD) contain reactive glucose degradation products (GDPs) as a result of glucose breakdown during heat-sterilization. GDPs in PD fluids (PDFs) have been associated with the progressive alteration of the peritoneal membrane during long-term PD by cytotoxic effects and formation of advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs). In this study, we investigated the possible fate of two characteristic GDPs, 3-deoxyglucosone (3-DG) and glyoxal, during PD. In vivo, 3-DG and glyoxal concentrations, which were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), decreased in PDFs by 78% and 88% during 4 h of dwell time. The PDFs were then incubated in vitro in the presence of the most important reaction partners of GDPs in the peritoneal cavity. Neither human peritoneal mesothelial cells, human peritoneal fibroblasts, soluble protein, an insoluble collagen surface, nor components of spent dialysate led to a significant reduction of 3-DG or glyoxal after 6 h. Only after long-term incubation, a noticeable decrease of 3-DG was observed (-37% after three weeks), more likely due to spontaneous degradation reaction than formation of advanced glycation endproducts. These results suggest that in the course of PD, 3-DG, and glyoxal are absorbed into the organism and thus might contribute to the systemic pool of reactive carbonyl compounds. 相似文献

Selective targeting of DNA by means of fluorescent labeling has become a mainstay in the life sciences. While genetic engineering serves as a powerful technique and allows the visualization of nucleic acid by using DNA-targeting fluorescent fusion proteins in a cell-type- and subcellular-specific manner, it relies on the introduction of foreign genes. On the other hand, DNA-binding small fluorescent molecules can be used without genetic engineering, but they are not spatially restricted. Herein, we report a photocaged version of the DNA dye Hoechst33342 (pcHoechst), which can be uncaged by using UV to blue light for the selective staining of chromosomal DNA in subnuclear regions of live cells. Expanding its application to a vertebrate model organism, we demonstrate uncaging in epithelial cells and short-term cell tracking in vivo in zebrafish. We envision pcHoechst as a valuable tool for targeting and interrogating DNA with precise spatiotemporal resolution in living cells and wild-type organisms. 相似文献

Sedimentation superimposed on industrial cake filtration leads to longer filtration times and often has a detrimental effect on subsequent process steps such as washing and demoisturing. The influence of sedimentation is seldom recognised in laboratory filtration experiments. Methods are presented for evaluation of pressure filter experiments with superimposed sedimentation which avoid the error made in the usual evaluation methods. For the case of zone sedimentation the article presents a graphical evaluation and a numerical method of modelling permitting scale up to any desired cake height. In superimposed classifying sedimentation simultaneous measurement of filtrate volume and cake height provide information about local variation in filter cake resistance. It is shown for a model system that, owing to sedimentation, the cake resistance shows a minimum at mean cake height and increases rapidly towards greater heights. The local cake resistance corelates with particle size distributions measured for layers of a horizontally cut filter cake. The method of evaluation presented permints determination of the flow resistance of the uppermost layers of a cake and hence estimation of the gas pressure necessary for demoisturing. The profiles of local filter cake resistance show that the relative cake layering is largely independent of the level of suspension filling. A scale-up model is presented for use in those cases where classifying sedimentation cannot be suppressed. 相似文献

This article investigates the potential of aluminum oxide nanoparticles for the reduction of process-induced distortions of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP). Therefore the matrix properties, which affect the distortions, are experimentally and mechanistically analyzed in detail at various particle contents. The results clearly show an increasing impact of raised particle content on gelation, chemical and thermal shrinkage, on Young's modulus, as well as on Poisson's ratio. These alterations can be successfully transferred to reduce spring-in of L-shaped CFRP brackets, which are manufactured by infusion technology. However, it is found that particle contents higher than 5 wt % are needed to influence these parameters. For further understanding of the parameters controlling spring-in, a numerical sensitivity analysis is performed by the correlation of various matrix parameters and the induced distortions. The results from a structural simulation reveal that changes in thermal and chemical shrinkage as well as in gelation have a major impact on the distortions, but the modes of action of the particles also have to be taken into consideration. These mechanistical insights about nanoparticle impacts might be a valuable approach to lower or overcome distortions in composite materials in the future. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. A dual contrast agent for computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was synthesized via microemulsion polymerization. This contrast agent consists of Fe3O4 particles (d = 7 nm) with an iodine-carrying nanopolymeric shell, with overall particle sizes ranging from 50 to 250 nm. 2-Methacryloyloxyethyl(2,3,5-triiodobenzoate) was used as the monomer. Sodium oleate was used as the surfactant and its amount was varied to control the overall particle size. The composite nanoparticles were mainly characterized via dynamic light scattering, with further analyses using transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The particles provided a highly visible contrast in CT and MR images. A template for biomedical applications was created by adding a comonomer and the particles were further functionalized with the somatostatin analogue Tyr3-octreotate. The particles were tested for specific uptake into somatostatin receptor-positive AR42J cells. The additional uptake of the functionalized particles was investigated. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
